Greece and Brazil:
A Comparison of the Costs and Benefits Associated with
Free Trade Policies and Restrictive Trade Policies.

Introduction The countries of Greece and Brazil have experienced unique situations in both economic conditions. These situations brought about significant changes in policy, which resulted in several events having both negative and positive impacts on each country’s development, and most importantly, international trade. This paper will also examine the economic structure of both Greece and Brazil, while identifying the similarities and differences of these structures. Greece became a member of the European Union in the 1980’s and participated in the free trade environment that was and is a representation of the EU. Brazil, on the other hand, practices protectionism which also had both a negative and positive impact on the country. This paper looks at both the positive and the negative impacts of each country’s trade policies and practices.

Glob

...Chapter 1 INTRODUCTION: GLOBALIZATION AND INTERNATIONAL TRADE We live in a world that is highly interconnected by a bewildering array of complex economic transactions, social and environmental problems, and international political collaborations and conflicts. Examples from global economics are found in the news everyday. A decision by American policymakers to subsidize the production of ethanol, a form of gasoline containing an additive produced from corn, is seen by many as a key reason that grain prices are high around the world. The spectacular emergence of China as a major exporter of manufactured goods has affected wages in both rich and poor countries. As large corporations, such as Microsoft, Intel, Toyota, General Electric, and Siemens have expanded their investments in affiliates in many nations around the world, they have built global production networks that share technological knowledge across locations to produce increasingly complex goods that could be sold anywhere. Today, a major cultural product, such as a Hollywood movie or a jazz band’s latest compact disk, is likely to employ creative personnel from around the world, with various components of the product recorded, mixed or edited in different locations. The importance of international connections in trade, investment, and skilled services can be illustrated by considering the apparently simple act of making and bringing to market an item of apparel, say a fashionable woolen men’s suit. The initial task...

...contains an analysis, from a global standpoint, of major trends in trade, investment, finance, macroeconomic regimes and international labour mobility. This analysis covers a long period in history, from the last quarter of the nineteenth century to the present, and is structured according to the successive phases of globalization identified in the preceding chapter. The first section focuses on the development of trade and investment flows among the principal regions of the world, with emphasis on the variable relationship between the expansion of trade and economic growth, the emergence of integrated production systems underpinning the operations of transnational corporations, the primary challenges faced by developing countries as a result of these global trends and the creation of an international institutional framework in the area of trade. The second section contains an analysis of the most important changes that have taken place in international finance and macroeconomic regimes. After reviewing major historical developments in this area, the study focuses on the volatility and contagion which have characterized capital flows in the third phase of globalization, and finally analyses the magnitude and composition of capital flows to developing countries. 29 PART I: GLOBAL OUTLOOK The last section presents an overview of the phenomenon of international labour migration. It includes a comparison of the relative magnitude of migratory flows and the regulatory environment...

Organization The overarching logic of the book is intuitive—organized around answers to the what, where, why, and how of international business. WHAT? Section one introduces what is international business and who has an interest in it. Students will sift through the globalization debate and understanding the impact of ethics on global businesses. Additionally, students will explore the evolution of international trade from past to present, with a focus on how firms and professionals can better understand today’s complex global business arena by understanding the impact of political and legal factors. ...Global Macro Research Top of Mind November 13, 2014 Issue 29 Is Europe the Next Japan? From the editor: A slowdown in Euro area growth momentum from an already anemic pace, combined with ongoing concerns about deflation risks, has made comparisons with Japan’s so-called “lost decades” Top of Mind. We ask three experts whether the Euro area is set to repeat Japan’s prolonged period of stagnation and deflation: former BOJ Governor Masaaki Shirakawa (unclear, but Euro area recovery requires addressing the underlying problem of economic integration and not its symptom, deflation), GS Chief European Economist Huw Pill (low growth and even some deflation similar to Japan, in terms of outcome if not in terms of causes, are likely in the short term, but – also akin to Japan – a deflationary spiral is not), and LSE Professor Paul De Grauwe (there is a real risk of this outcome or worse unless policies change). We conclude that Euro area economies and assets could escape Japan’s fate but warn that Euro area stagnation would have a greater impact on the global economy than did Japan’s.
