...Weiner 1 Jacob Weiner Daniel McClure California Culture October 1, 2014 California Sunshine and Noir California, the Golden State, where the sun is always shining, the waves are always crashing, and dreams are coming true. Right? Well, not exactly. It hasn’t always been sunshine and smiles for the great state of California. The state has gone through a variety of stages both economically, and politically. Throughout these phases, there have been a fair amount of themes that have helped build the foundation of California culture. Of course, there is the notion that anyone can move to California and strike it rich. This dream that is still very alive today has contributed in the past and present with massive booms in immigration into California. This popular conception is warm and welcoming, but it does not tell the entire story of California. When looking into the past and understanding how this state came to be, there is a dark and iniquitous aura that suggests that California isn’t really that enchanting, glamorous place that it is made out to be. The California Dream all started in 1848 when discovery of gold sparked a rapid movement known as the California Gold Rush. Word quickly spread when John Marshall first made his discovery in the American River. As Albert L. Film Noir is identified by its constant opposition of light and shadow, oblique camera angles, and the ways characters are placed in unconventional or awkward positions with particular shots. (Conrad, 2006, pp1-8) Themes that characterize Film Noir include inversions of traditional values, the feeling of alienation, paranoia, presence of crime and violence, and the feelings of despair, fear, mistrust and loss of innocence. (Conrad, 2006, pp1-8) Many argue on whether or not film noir is a genre. Foster Hirsch says that a film genre is “determined by conventions or narrative structure, characterization, theme, and visual design.” According to this definition, Hirsch felt film noir was in fact a genre because of the consistent tone and the story telling and visual conventions running through the films of the classic noir period. Andrew Spicer denied film noir can be defined as a genre since the expression of film noir is “a discursive critical construction that has evolved over time.” (Conrad, 2006, pp10) Nonetheless, as a crucial film movement, film noir consisted of films tending to have frequent scenes with dark shadowy low key lighting with many night scenes. ...Taylor Out of the Past Out of the Past is a 1947 film noir directed by French director Jacques Tourneur from the source novel, “Build My Gallows High” by Daniel Mainwaring and using a script by the author but with hefty additions from the author of The Maltese Falcon, James M Cain as well Frank Fenton, a B-movie writer who rumour has it was responsible for many of the films great one liners. As the AMC film site has it, “The downbeat screenplay was based on Geoffrey Homes' (a pseudonym - his real name was Daniel Mainwaring) 1946 novel Build My Gallows High, a book that consciously imitated Dashiell Hammett's The Maltese Falcon (1941). (An uncredited James M. Cain wrote some of the script.)” Tourneur was an established director whose oeuvre was predominantly what we should call B Movies but all of which had a striking visual style. His three most famous movies before Out of the Past, Cat People, I Walked with a Zombie and The Leopard Man are all about transformation, the night, perversion, the corrosive effects of evil, and the powerful link between violence and sex. Both he and Mainwaring were unapologetic left wingers (Mainwaring had to operate under a pseudonym during the McCarthy witch hunts) who saw evil in greed. Mainwaring’s most famous film script was the “reds under the bed” masterpiece The Invasion of the Body snatchers, another film about changes in people. ...Out of Africa is a good example of great cinematography. The story is somewhat of a love story. Personally, I found the story line to be okay at best. But, I always get captivated at the filming. The entire movie was shot on location in Kenya; and while more difficult to do it paid off in this movie. You get so caught up in looking at the scenery, that the slow advancement of the plot can be tolerated. There is a great scene where Robert Redford and Meryl Streep are out and there is a lion looking their way. He tells her not to worry because he will protect her. The next second, a lion heads their way, and she has one chance to shoot. Of course, she doesn’t miss. But the way this scene is filmed, you feel like you are there; you can see how you feel safe, and all at once, it changes. The movie also makes good use of three-dimensional arrangement of people. There are many scenes where there are several people in one scene. But, the way they are arranged makes it easy to look at and get a good sense of what Africa feels like. I would also mention that the costumes help to have a realistic feel of Africa. Meryl is in chinos and light-weighted cotton tops most of the time. This movie could be turned into a Banana Republic advertisement; and, that is exactly the feel costumes should have for a movie. 007 Casino Royale was a good continuation of the Bond series. This is the start of Bond’s career as a 007 agent. It had elements for the old Bond fans, as well as for the newcomers...

...Film Noir and Romance: It’s No Fairy Tale Baby Film Noir may not seem like a very romantic subject considering how many of the couples in the films are eventually lead into their death or a prison term. There are some romantic aspects to these type of cinema. Even if a couple does have a tragic end, there is always some sort of romance in the middle. It could be lust or love, but it is usually there. While all Film Noir never ends as fairy tale, an audience can look at most of the films and see how love, or lust, can drive people to do despicable acts of crime. Before describing how romance and the many varying types of love appear in Film Noir, it is important to understand the different gender roles each character plays. The male protagonist paired with a femme fatale is the usual leading roles in a Film Noir, but that isn’t a hard set rule. Men can play the male victim, damaged men, a private eye, a psychopath, or a homme fatal, (Spicer 85). Women can also play a variety of roles such as the nurturer, the good-bad girl, the female victim, or a femme fatale, (Spicer 90). Male victims can be a protagonist who just gets trapped in the web of lies weaved by a beautiful woman, a femme fatale. The damaged man is usually a veteran who has a hard time adjusting to society after war or a police officer who loses control.
