Green washing in the Commercial Seafood Industry
Dave Mangus
Milwaukee Area Technical College

The subject of my planned report is greenwashing in the seafood industry. Using several articles from the NPR, Earth Island, World Wildlife Foundation, and SeaWeb I plan to convey my opinion on this matter. My basic approach to this topic will be to explain greenwashing, greenmailing, and the view points from the opposition and the rebuttal from the MSC and possibility of the shrimp industry if I can find their responses to the claims. I am reserving the right to add sources to my list as required to provide more examples to support my position. Also I am reserving the right tighten or broaden the focus of this report to keep it manageable. I.E. it could be the overall seafood industry or I may just focus on the MSC and NPR prospective.
Another piece to my paper is going to focus on the demand for sustainable certified products and the stress put on the MSC program to supply this demand thru questionable practices of calling it sustainable, when in some cases only the promise to do things better in five to ten years seems to be all that is required for the sticker. I also plan to include the market response to some of the certified sustainable items that don’t pass the common sense test. I also plan to list the MSC guidelines for sustainable fisheries and question how certain things can be certified sustainable by them, when their own guidelines say it isn’t. My intent isn’t to bash the MSC or the shrimp industry for they have made some efforts to improve things but is it truly sustainable?
Is Sustainable-Labeled Seafood Really Sustainable? (Zwerdling, Willaim 2013) The reference material I’ll be using show the problems with certain MSC certified sustainable products. This is part one of a three part series. I will be using all three in report. Graphs, and data from this will be used to support the position of my report.
From the articles will be using the information from the Frasier River Fishery on Sockeye Salmon to support my greenwashing claim. Also the swordfish fisheries in Florida and Canadian waters to compare and contrast MSC policy on sustainability. Other information from the article will be the spike in certifications to meet the growing demand for sustainable seafood. Details of some of the problems with the claims, including the promise to do fishing in a sustainable way in five to ten years as sustainable now. Threats: Overfishing. (Fox, Davis 2013) Will be used to confirm the policy of the MSC, their guidelines, and positions on the sustainable seafood market. It will be used to question how under their own guidelines they can list certain fisheries as sustainable when either the method, the by catch or health of the fishery does not meet these guidelines. I will use their response to the article Is Sustainable-Labeled Seafood Really Sustainable? (Zwerdling, Willaim 2013) to supply their position on problems they have with the article.
By using this information in their own words my intent is to show how they are greenwashing. Environmentally they are doing some great things, sustainable by the guidelines of the triple bottom-line not so much. It also gives some interesting points to how they are greenmailing the industry without them seeing it. Not sure if I’ll be able to fit this part into the report or not.
What is sustainable seafood? (SeaWeb, 2013) Will be used as a guide to list the best case seafood to the worst case seafood. A reference outside the MSC and the NPR article above that shows a per species list, including a by method for sustainability. Will be one of many resource used outside of the NPR and WWF to support my claim of greenwashing.

...Kyle Kisling April 7th, 2013 Composition 1 Food and Family Food holds a special place in society. Aside from its obvious purpose of survival, food also is a great way to bring people together. The first real example I can provide is the common celebration of Thanksgiving. The day has no real significance other than eating food with family. A turkey is placed at the center of the table, football provides entertainment, and family members enjoy the company of one another. I feel like some people underappreciate the true value of food and the cultural reunions it creates. Though not all countries celebrate Thanksgiving, food still carries an important role in countries all over the world. The first documentary we watched was called Smokin’ Fish. The film went into deep investigation of the culture of Cory Mann. The title alone should give away the idea that food is somewhat involved in Cory’s culture. Cory is an entrepreneur who annually returns to his home village for a few months to catch fish from the river and smoke them. Initially, I questioned his motives when he simply abandons his business and returns home to fish. It came off as strange because most people are not willing to risk their financial security to go fishing for a few months. The film continues on and as it progresses you see that smoking fish carries a much deeper meaning to Cory. Cory is part Indian and smoking fish is a tradition his peoples have had for centuries. He feels as though it is his duty...

Red Lobster

...Evaluation of Red Lobster Restaurant My overall opinion of Red Lobster is very high. Seafood is one of my favorite foods and after visiting Red Lobster, I must say that I was extremely impressed and satisfied with the quality and the taste of the food. Also, the restaurant was very clean and inviting while the staff was more than helpful while taking my. The waitress was courteous and was always eager to refill my drink As I entered Red lobster, I was greeted at the front door with a friendly hello ' and after only a ten minute wait, I was seated at a comfortable and clean table. The waitress politely asked if I would like her to get my drink and she insisted that she would be back in only a few minutes with my drink. True to her word, she returned with a cold class of Coca Cola and she asked if I would like a few minutes more to look over the menu I told the waitress that I was ready to give my and she smiled as she asked if I would like a salad with my meal. I felt that the staff at Red Lobster was unbeatable and I would recommend my friends to this restaurant because of the excellent service that I received from the waitress The same waitress brought out a fresh garden salad with an oil and vinegar dressing which was superb and before I even finished my salad she returned with a steaming plate of lobster and crab legs The plate of food looked very appetizing to the eyes and the smell of the food was extraordinary. I was given a small , wet napkin by the same waitress...

Bonefish Grill Observation

...Seafood and Cajun food is a large part of the southern culture. Most if not all love to eat fried alligator, duck, catfish, and other foods. But just those few along are the bread and butter of the southern culture. After visiting Bonefish Grill for the first time several years ago, this has been listed as one of the many places you can get a quality southern style meal. Bonefish Grill, is a place I would bring family and friends, and when you want time to yourself. The atmosphere is welcoming, the staff is mannerable and is a good representation of the southern hospitability. As you are approaching the revolving door, you notice the fish as well as the restaurant name Bonefish Grill. Depending on the time and day, the wait can be anywhere between 10-30 minutes, but with a large group it could be up to 45-minute wait. During the day, Bonefish Grill has a very welcoming atmosphere. The dining areas are well lit, and they use natural lighting. However, at night Bonefish grill has a relaxed atmosphere. The lights are dimmed low,...

Bullhead Vs Catfish Research Paper

...IDK YET The world’s waters are filled with millions of fish, but only a small fraction have been discovered and identified. Some date back to ancient times, while others are considered to be more modern. Even though some species of fish may have extreme differences from each other, they all contain diets that require specific nutrients in order to carry out healthy life. When identifying fish one must look for significant traits or behaviors that the fish may contain. A carp is identified by the single barbel located at each corner of the mouth. Meanwhile, the mirror carp can be spotted by their large scales that can flake off. Determining the difference between the bullhead and catfish may seem a little tricky, but if one looks close enough, the differences can easily be found. The bullhead has a visible rounded tail, and the catfish has a forked tail. Not only are fish identified by the shapes of their tails, but also by the shapes of their mouths. For instance a largemouth bass would be found with a large upper jaw that extends past the eye of the fish, and the buffalo contains a downturned mouth with thick lips. Fish can also sometimes be identified by an opercular flap. A blue gill has solid black opercular flap placed on its side, while the greenfish, who closely resembles the bluegill, has a black opercular flap outlined with either a white or yellow edge. Redear fish can also be identified by their black opercular flap with a red edge. Other traits that can...

...strengths, and minimize their weaknesses more efficiently. Ruby Tuesday: Strengths First I will start off with the positive side of the story. Ruby Tuesday has many strengths as a restaurant. One of the first strengths that stand out about Ruby Tuesday is the food. The restaurants serve American food, which many people in America tend to like to eat. There are quite a few restaurants in this same category across America today, yet somehow Ruby Tuesday seems to stand apart from the rest. The food that they serve plays a few parts in this, some of which I will discuss later as they are weaknesses for the company as well as strengths. Ruby Tuesday has an extensive menu that covers everything from hamburgers and fries to steaks and fresh seafood choices. Having a menu so diverse helps the company in broadening their...

They come in many forms, including: • Pre-prepared fresh • Canned • Frozen • Dried •Juiced Pre-prepared fresh fruit Common varieties include fruit salads . These are convenient, but may have a shorter storage life.
