...17 July 2012 The Beret of the United States Army I chose to use the US Army beret in the museum of American Life project. The beret is a soft round cap that fits on the head, originally made of wool and now can be made of cotton. It fits snugly on the head and is shaped in several different ways. The beret was first worn in France, Spain, and Italy back in the 17th century. Mass production of the beret began in the 18th century and was associated with the working class classes. The military beret was first adopted by the French in the late 18th century. It is worn as the official military and police headdress by almost a hundred countries worldwide. The military beret has a leather sweatband and draw string to allow it to fit tighter on the head. It also has a flash which hold the unit crest that the military personnel is assigned to. The US Army did not start using the beret until 1943. The British maroon beret was first worn by the 509th Parachute infantry Regiment as an honorary membership in the British Parachute Regiment for their valorous work in World War II. Since November 2001 the black beret is worn by all US Army troops, unless they are approved to wear a distinctive beret such as the Tan Beret in which the US Army rangers wear, and the Green Beret that the US ARMY Special Forces wear. ...Deploying to Afghanistan Jeffrey Sapp ENG 121 Instructor: Amanda Smothers September 1, 2014 Deploying to Afghanistan After a deployment to Afghanistan, I never looked at life the same because having to adapt to a deployment lifestyle was significantly different than the lifestyle I was used to, being attached to a special forces unit of Army Green Berets was different since I am in the Air Force, and facilitating operational missions with the special forces team showed me what it's like to be apart of the mission instead of supporting it. As I reflect back, I don’t think I’ll ever be put in any kind of situation that’ll test me more than my deployment did. I will discuss the many challenges I faced during my deployment, and also explain the deployment events and experiences in sequential order. After I’ve told my story, I’ll briefly discuss how the deployment changed me as a person. First, after a deployment to Afghanistan, I never looked at life the same because having to adapt to a deployment lifestyle was significantly different than the lifestyle I was used to. The message of each film essentially is sacrifice. The Deer Hunter and We were Soldiers use a group of three protagonists to convey its theme of sacrifice. When we take a closer look at them though we can see past the explosions and carnage that accompany most epic war films and see how war is depicted in a changing society. Society has dramatically changed since the post-Vietnam era of the 1970’s when The Deer Hunter was made, to the ultra patriotic times of an immediate post- 9/11 era when We were Soldiers was made . By demonstrating the differences between these films in the way that the military, society and family are depicted we see an evolvement of the way war is portrayed on film. First let’s take a look at the way the military is portrayed in The Deer Hunter.
