The Greenhouse Effect

Issue Statement

While some people believe the earth's climatic changes are due to the fact that the

universe is getting older, others believe it is due to the greenhouse effect.

The greenhouse effect is a naturally occuring phenomenon that is responsible for trapping heat near the earth's surface and keeping the planet warm. It is called the greenhouse effect because the way it works is similar to the way in which a green house functions. In a greenhouse sunlight passes through the transparent roof and walls and strikes the objects inside- plants, flowerpots, tables, and so forth. These objects absorb energy from sun, become warmer, and then give off energy themselves in the form of heat. Only a little of this heat energy passes out through the glass, much of it is "trapped" in the greenhouse, raising the temperature inside.

In some ways, the earth functions rather like a greenhouse except on a much larger scale.

Although the greenhouse effect has only recently been in the news, is nothing new in th history of our planet, has played major role in making life on earth possible. Without the greenhouse effect, the earth would be too cold for living thing to survive. The big question today is "If greenhouse effect is natural, why are people so worried about it. Is soemthing good turning bad?" Up until about 150 years ago the compostion of the earths atmosphere had remianed relatively unchanged for several thousand years. Since mid 1800s certain human activities have been changing the heat trappin ability of the atmospher dramatically, as a result more heat is being trapped by the atmosphere. Scientists have been anticipating this "strengthening" of the greenhouse effect for sometime, and that it will lead to a worldwide increase in temperature. This is come true because the world is getting warmer. Global warming can be expected

Green House Effect

...Green House Effect The green house effect is the warming up of the atmosphere. This happens due to the fact that there are certain gasses in the atmosphere that allows a certain wavelength of electromagnetic waves to freely pass through, while for the other types of electromagnetic waves, it doesn’t allow free movement. For example, high-energy electromagnetic waves like ultraviolet and gamma radiation get absorbed by the atmosphere. This allows for other radiation with a lower frequency to pass through the atmosphere and heat the Earth. Greenhouse Gases Carbon dioxide () is one of the greenhouse gases. It consists of one carbon atom with an oxygen atom bonded to each side. When its atoms are bonded tightly together, the carbon dioxide molecule can absorb infrared radiation, which happen to be vibrating in the same frequency as the molecule, causing the molecule to vibrate. The phenomena where both the molecule and the infrared radiation vibrate in the same frequency and combine, it’s called resonance. Fortunately, the range of frequency of Infrared radiation is in the region of the frequency of the molecules. Eventually, the vibrating molecule will emit the radiation again, and it will likely be absorbed by yet another greenhouse gas molecule. This absorption-emission-absorption cycle serves to keep the heat near the surface, effectively insulating the surface from the cold of space. Carbon dioxide, water vapor (), methane (), nitrous oxide (), and a few other gases...

Green House Effect

...9/25/12 THE GREENHOUSE EFFECT THE GREENHOUSE EFFECT What is the Greenhouse Effect? Life on earth is possible because the sun provides energy and warmth. The sun's rays pass through the atmosphere and are absorbed by the earth's surface, which heats up and radiates energy back into space. Some of the gases in the atmosphere capture and hold radiated energy, keeping the surface of the earth warm, much as the glass of a greenhouse keeps the plants inside warm. Without these greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide (CO2), all radiated heat would be lost into space and the surface of the earth would be cold and barren. This natural phenomenon acts like a blanket around the earth, is essential for life, and is often referred to as the greenhouse effect. Man-made emissions are leading to increased amounts of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. The increases in greenhouse gases are trapping more of the energy radiated from earth and are likely to lead to global warming and weather extremes. The possible impact of human activity on the greenhouse effect was first recognized in the early 1800s. By the turn of this century, calculations were being made relating increases in atmospheric carbon dioxide to temperature change. In the early 1900s it was estimated that doubling or tripling the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere would lead to a temperature increase of up to nine degrees Celsius. Since then, carbon dioxide levels have increased by 26 per cent, and global temperatures...

Global warming has become a major problem as we move on to 21st century and beyond. Like the old say goes, prevention is better than cure. We have done enough damage, knowingly and unknowingly we have contributed to global warming. Our efforts and determined contribution to reduce global warming and spare the ecosystem to recover thereby cautiously working restore the balance of nature is very urgent. Pollution of the atmosphere has to be checked and anything related to the release of the greenhouse gases should be monitored. Deforestation should be stopped as it causes the concentration of carbon at a greater extent. It has been said that it takes roughly 19 trees to make one ton of paper and that the usage of one ton of recycled paper will save approximately 17 trees. The burning of wood should be reduced to a greater extent as it releases oxidizable carbon to the atmosphere whose presence in greater amount causes the elevation of temperature. LPG stoves can replace the fire wood burning. Bio...

Green House

...GREEN HOUSE EFFECT INTRODUCTION In temperate countries some economically important plants that cannot grow outside at a very low temperature during the winter are grown in glass-walled & glass-roofed growth chambers (known as glass houses)exposed to sunlight. Glass houses are also used in sub tropiacal regions during winter months & relatively cold high altitude for high value horticultural annual crops including flowers on a cmmercial scale as well as for research work especially for breeding of new varities & crop physiological & pathological studies. Temperature within the glass house rises because of the glass of the roof & walls through it allows entry of sunlight with little obstruction, resist the escaping of the reflected light of longer wave-lengths rich in infra-red rays resulting in a heat built up. Such glass houses are called green housesas the light & heat within such houses prove very effective for profuse growth of green plants. The property of trapping heat by carbon di oxide & other gases of the atmosphere is similar to the glass cover of green house that reasists the escaping of heat radiated from inside of the house. As such, these atmospheric gases are called green house gases that resist the escaping of radiated heat from the earth by absorbing infra red rays & particularly reflecting the trapped heat back to earth's surface.this phenomenon is therefore called the green-house effect in wicch certain atmospheric gases act in a manner similar to the glass...

...di-oxide is a natural constituent of atmosphere, but now, its concentration is increasing at an alarming rate. According to an estimate, CO2 level is expected to be doubled by 2030 A.D. The term ‘Green House Effect’ is also called as ‘Atmospheric Effect’, ‘Global Warming’ or ‘CO2 Problem’. Human activities are changing the composition as well as behaviour at an unprecedented rate. The pollutants form a wide range of human activities are increasing the global atmospheric concentration of certain heat trapping gases, which act like a blanket, trapping close to the surface that would otherwise escape through the atmosphere to the outer space. This process is known as ‘Green House Effect’. Green House is that body which allows the short wave length incoming solar radiation to come in, but does not allow the long wave outgoing terrestrial infra red radiation to escape. The progressive warming up of the earth’s surface due to blanketing effect of manmade CO 2 in the atmosphere is called ‘Green House Effect’. (Figure 1). The four major green house gases, which cause adverse effects are CO2, CH4, N2O and CFC’s. Among these CO2 is the most common and important green house gas. In addition, ozone and SO2 are also act as serious pollutants in causing global warming. Green House Effect Under normal concentrations of CO2, the temperature of the earth’s surface is maintained by the energy balance of the sun’s rays that strike the planet and the heat is radiated back into the outer...

As members of Congress, we have heard and learned new and different facts about the process of Earth. Some causes and effects of global warming are easy to understand, with substantial evidence, yet there are still unanswered questions and reasoning as to why global warming is occurring. This essay is to outline the background of global warming and to display opposing viewpoints. Since there is not enough evidential research to connect global warming with natural factors, human activity, and its impacts, we might take advantage of its beneficial gain to our environment, economic, and social system. The facts and fictions of global warming will convince members of Congress that there are opposing viewpoints to global warming and its effects. According to the Intergovernmental Panel Climate Change, global warming is the increase of Earth’s average temperature. “The Intergovernmental Panel...

Global Warming

...the last century, the planet’s temperature has risen unusually fast, about 1.2 to 1.4 degrees fahrenheit. Scientists believe that it’s human activity that’s driving the temperature’s up. A process known as global warming. Ever since the industrial revolution began, facturies, plants and eventually cars has burnt fossil fuel such as oil and coal, releasing huge amount of carbon dioxide znd other gases into the atmosphere. The green house effect begins with the sun and the energy that eradiates to the earth. The earth and the atmosphere absorbes some of these energies while the rest is eriadiated back into space. Naturally occuring gases in the atmosphere trap some of this energy and reflected back, warming the earth. Scientists now believe that the green house effect is being intensified by the extra green-house gases that humans have released. Evidence from global warming includes the recent srength of very warm air. 1998 was the warmest era in history, with 2005 coming in second. Meanwhile, readings taken from high schools show that the green-house gases carbon dioxide and methan have known their highest levels in the past 420 000 years. The extend of Arctic sea has declined of about 10% in the last 30 years. As long as industrialised nations consume energy, and develloping countries increase their fostil fuel consumption, the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere will continue to rise. Researchers predict that temperatures will increase about two to ten...

Melting Point: the Issue of Global Warming

...not stop our excessive carbon dioxide output, major changes could happen to our environment and our economic well being. You emit CO2 emissions almost everywhere you go, every time you drive your car, have a fire in your fireplace, and even when you use your gas stove to cook a meal, you are producing green house gases that spread into our atmosphere. When you are using these items they release green house gases such as carbon dioxide, steam (H2O), and methane (Broder). These gases trap the heat in our atmosphere that is usually dispersed into outer space. This is causing our global temperature to rise. But unlike the other green house gases, CO2 stays in the atmosphere for “thousands of years” instead of the “weeks or years” that the other green house gases make residency in our atmosphere. This labels CO2 as the main contributor to global warming (Broder). Initially, for some people the idea of global warming isn’t such a bad idea. But the suspected outcomes of global warming far outweigh the pro’s that some may see. There is evidence that global warming has been wreaking havoc environmentally and economically. The rising temperatures are setting off a domino effect of environmental disasters. These warmer temperatures are quickly causing our polar ice caps to melt. The combination of melting and warming is endangering animal species, raising sea levels, and fueling natural disasters such as flash floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, and forest fires....

...Research Proposal in Technical Writing Tropical Design: An Eco-Friendly and Energy Saving Design for Residential Structure Submitted By: Gutierrez, Shiella Mae DL. Submitted To: Mr. Jesus Escuro 1st Semester 2011 Introduction Background of the Study “Do not fight forces, use them.” - (R. Buckmister Fuller) Tropical design is an environmentally conscious design technique in the field of architecture or simply described as designing with nature. This design minimizes the environmental impact of the building by enhancing efficiency and controls the use of materials, energy, and development space. There is an attempt to preserve air, water, and earth by choosing economically friendly building materials. Tropical design could contribute to the environment through its sustainable properties which minimizes too much use of electricity by using the natural energy as alternative. This research is conducted because it is a proof that both man and his natural environment can live in perfect harmony. The tropical conditions in the Philippines affect the high temperature, and low air flow which affect on the comfortable indoor environment. With this design approach, it can contribute to a sustainable lifestyle and culture. Tropical architecture can be a solution in preventing global warming because of its eco-friendly materials used in construction and the design itself. This design is important especially for those who are living in the tropics like the Philippines...

Global Warming

...What is global warming? Scientifically speaking it is describe as the gradual increase in the temperature of the earth’s atmosphere believed to be due to the green house effect. In this paper I will discuss the history or global warming and how it became the most talked about topic in environmental science. In addition I will describe various types of pollutions that we humans have contributed to making the atmosphere worst every year. Finally I will conclude the paper with a variety of solutions humans have begun to contribute to mother nature well being. History of the greenhouse effect and global warming was first presented by a Swedish scientist called Svante Arrhenius in 1896. Arrehnius stated that fossil fuel combustion would eventually effect global warming and that the earth’s atmosphere or ozone layer would begin to diminish as we begin to utilized and burn these natural resources. Arrhnius also explained how the earth was at a certain temperature. He continued to say that the earth’s temperature would rise every year 5% due to the absorption of water vapor and carbon dioxide which he called green house effect. The green house effect is the warming of the atmosphere by the trapping of long wave radiation being radiated to space. The gases most responsible for this effect are water vapor and carbon dioxide. For example any engine that is running on oil or gas that lets of carbon dioxide is polluting the earth these gases are released into the air and are wearing...

...atmosphere and oceans”. Human actions, primarily the release of green house gases from smokestacks, vehicles, and burning forests, are perhaps the chief power causing this situation. CO2 (Carbon dioxide) emissions belong to the most important causes of global warming. In a Global Warming Essay the writer can mention: * Causes of Global Warming: * Global warming has increased extensively since the Industrial Revolution. These changes occur due to increased burning of fossil fuels and other human activities. The discharge of green house gases like carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide etc. into nature (Also see Nature Essay) is another reason for rising temperature of earth. * Buildings, both commercial and residential represent a larger source of global warming pollution than cars and trucks because they require a lot of fuel to be burnt which emits a large amount of carbon dioxide. * Effects of Global Warming: * Increase of temperature on the earth: * Changes in temperature increase the frequency and intensity of some severe weather events, like floods, droughts and tornadoes. * Lower agricultural yields and species extinctions are caused by Global Warming. * Rise of sea levels: * Sea levels are rising due to thermal expansion of the ocean, along with melting of land ice. * The total power of cyclones has increased noticeably because their average intensity and duration have increased. * The Greenhouse Effect: * CO2 is produced by burning fossil fuel and other activities...

...Global Warming There is no denying fact that Global Warming is a major issue in post modern society. Global Warming is the increase of Earth's average surface temperature due to effect of greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide emissions from burning fossil fuels or from deforestation, which trap heat that would otherwise escape from Earth. In this essay the reason and solutions will be discussed before coming to any conclusion. First and Foremost reason of this issue is the Developments of human civilization. Human invents many things to live his life better and comfortable. For that human bread use the fossil fuel for their transportation, factories and do deforestation for their urbanization. Man done many nuclear experiments for their researches. All these things create green house effect. Actually green house effect is caused by the role played, green house gasses such as Carbon dioxide, Methane and Nitrous oxide, these are major cause of Global Warming. On the other hand, we can say that, may be this is a major problem of the present era, but it does not mean that it is not curable thing. We should use natural resource of energy for transportation, factories and for other needs. The sources of natural energy are Solar Energy, Bio-Fuel, and Wind’s Power. For example Sun is the major source of free and eco-friendly energy and we are not using it for our development. It may reduce our problem of pollution. In addition we could use public...
