...Review of the White Paper on Sustainability A Report on the Green Building Movement, Building Design & Construction, November 2003. Abstract In fulfillment of an assignment to review the White Paper on Sustainability: A Report on the Green Building Movement, Building Design & Construction, November 2003. The White Paper on Sustainability main elements; are the historical overview of green building, the results of a specially commissioned survey, an analysis of trends, issues, and published research. And the last one is a set of recommendations that describe specific actions to be performed. A brief history of green building is also discussed in the white paper. The basics of LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) including the LEED Certification levels and points system. The role of the Federal and State government in the sustainable building program, and the benefits we get from green buildings are also covered. Main Body Sustainable building is environmentally friendly, efficient using energy, water, and other materials. Green buildings is also protects occupant health and improving productivity. On Earth Day, April 21, 1993 the US President announced the plan to make the white house a model for efficiency and waste reduction. Within 36 months the improvements to the Presidential mansion let to $300,000 in, energy, and water savings. The greening of the White House also reduces the carbon footprint by 845 tons per year. The first of three “greening”...

... The Green Movement There have been many movements in time but the green movement is the most important movement in time. The green movement is to educate people how to live a life more dependent on natural resources and to seek energy from cleaner sources other then harmful energy choices. There are many long-term effects of going green. For example, improved health, cleaner water, climate change, economic benefits (Duggan 1). There are also negative long-term effects of not going green. For example, natural resources become depleted at an extraordinary rate. If people don’t adopt this movement there might not be any natural resources for the next generation. One of the biggest downfalls of going green is mostly directed towards individuals, businesses and their wallets. Green supplies are generally greater in cost then the traditionally used supplies(Roberts 1). The cost to convert a 2,500 square foot house with green options are energy audit 0-$500 with a one or less year payback, Duct Sealing $1,350 with a 5 to 4 year payback, insulation $2,000-$5,000 with a 5.7 to 14 year payback, Storm Windows $2,500-$4,750 4 to 7 year payback, Tankless Water Heater $1,489 with a 8.5 year payback (1). Even the smallest supplies have a higher cost: Compact Fluorescent light bulbs cost $136 (1) vs. the traditional $40.00 ones. The flip side is that the traditional light does not have a cost payback. One the other hand, there are benefits to the economy. The green movement would...

...The Green Movement American Intercontinental University The Green Movement Purpose: The purpose of this lab report is to demonstrate how changes in abiotic factor such as changes in precipitation patterns can influence plant populations. Introduction: During this observation I was observe ring the plant species called Kentucky Blue Grass. In this observation I will show how changes in the weather can affect the population of the grass. I will also explain how this may have some effect on Global Warming as well. Hypothesis: My hypothesis of this lab was that if you have more rain the population of the grass will greatly increase. Along with decent to great weather to help the grass grows and become healthy. Methods: There were three different times that I changed the rainy season to last The first experiment the rainy season lasted 150 days for five years, the next season lasted 100 days for five years and the last rainy season as set to last 50 days for five years. Results: My hypothesis was correct to a certain extent. I would think that the cooler the temperature the better the population but it seems that the warner the weather is when the biggest population occur. Discussion/Analysis: During the first observation I changed the rainy season to last 150 days. When the experiment started the temperature outside was 30 degrees and the population of the grass started at 500,000. As the first year went on the population slowly raised but for the most...

...The Green Belt Movement Brad Nordstrom Grantham University The Kenyon government degraded and mismanaged the environment stripping the land of its trees and resources. This resulted in sever soil erosion which polluted the rivers and streams leaving the rural people with no clean water. In 1977, a women named Wangari Maathai founded the Green Belt Movement. Wangari Maathai, was awarded the Noble Peace Prize in 2004 for founding the Green Belt Movement. Maathai is a Kenyan environmentalist and political activist who is focused on conserving the environment while ensuring womens rights and equality are brought to the forefront. The Green Belt Movement is an environmental organization that gives the power back to communities mainly to women to safeguard the environment. The reason this movement started was because in rural areas in Kenya women were reporting there streams were drying up, their food supplies were less and less and firewood was becoming scarcer. Maathai was a witness to soil erosion caused by treeless environments, she felt bound to do something to save the earth. She could not believe the results of deforesting would be the loss of exotic species and organisms. The Green Belt Movement’s mission is “to raise community consciousness on self-determination, equity, improved livelihood securities and environmental conservation using trees as an entry point.” Thanks largely to the efforts of both the GBM and the NCWK, women learn to communicate...

...The Local Food Movement: Going Green The food system is changing very fast nowadays. As we improve the quality of our life, we also develop the new ways to supply the population with food. Our growing population’s demand on food is enormous, and this demand led to the development of the processed food industry. This industry causes a lot of problems to humanity, harming the environment and health. But for the past decades our food system has significantly changed; new movements has occurred, and one them, the “locavore” movement, which supports the idea of the consumption of the locally grown food, is developing very fast. What do people mean by “local food”? According to the article “Local Food Systems: Concepts, Impacts, and Issues”, “the local food system is a concept, used to describe the distance between producers and consumers” (10). Alisa Smith and J.B. MacKinnon, the authors of 100-Mile Diet: A Year of Local Eating, put the boundaries of 100-mile radius because as they say: “A 100-mile radius is large enough to reach beyond a big city and small enough to feel truly local” (qtd. in DeWeerdt 62). As this movement grows, more and more people are becoming interested in local food system, and in particular, in its benefits to society. People should eat the food, which was grown within 100 miles of their living place because the local food system can benefit the population in terms of health, environment and economy. Health is one of the most important issues in the local...

...We were introduced to many symbolic objects in the beginning of the novel. The most known symbolic object was the green light throughout the novel. Symbolism in general means an artistic and poetic movement or style using symbolic images and indirect suggestion to express mystical ideas, emotions, and states of mind. In the earlier chapters, the green light once represented hope that Gatsby will have a relationship with Daisy. However by chapter 7, Gatsby is seen pining once more for Daisy in the moonlight, but this time he has made it past the green light onto Buchanans Lawn. “Standing there in the moonlight- watching over nothing.” (145) Another example is Bootlegging and organized crime. It symbolizes the corruption of the American Dream...

...write, it takes a little practice but soon your roses will look great. I drawed the painting by oil painting , i choose two colors with it shades . i choose natural colors it make it beautiful and shine. My color scheme: Green is an emotionally positive color, giving us the ability to love and nurture ourselves and others unconditionally. A natural peacemaker, it must avoid the tendency to become a martyr. Being a combination of yellow and blue, green encompasses the mental clarity and optimism of yellow with the emotional calm and insight of blue, inspiring hope and a generosity of spirit not available from other colors. Green promotes a love of nature, and a love of family, friends, pets and the home. It is the color of the garden lover, the home lover and the good host. This color relates to stability and endurance, giving us persistence and the strength to cope with adversity. Green is the color of prosperity and abundance, of finance and material wealth. It relates to the business world, to real estate and property. Prosperity gives a feeling of safety to green. Red is the color at the end of the spectrum of visible light next to orange and opposite violet. Red is one of the additive primary colors of light, along with green and blue. Red can vary in shade from very light pink to very dark maroon or burgundy; and in hue from the bright orange-red scarlet or vermilion to the bluish-red crimson. This color is a warm and positive color associated...

...Gestalt psychology Reflection The Gestalt psychology movement was fascinating within the time frame in which it started to develop. While other psychological movements strived to boil down psychology in almost simplistic, scientific terms, Gestalt psychology embraced complexities within the consciousness. Gestalt psychologists argued “that when we look out a window we really see trees and sky, not individual sensory elements such as brightness and hue” (Schultz & Schultz, 2011). There is more to what we experience and see that just the simple elements that make these things and experiences up. Gestalt psychology owes much of its beginnings to the philosophical work of Immanuel Kant (Schultz & Schultz, 2011). Kant believed that experiences were created not from association, but through the perception of those experiences (Schultz & Schultz, 2011). There is a certain level of individuality in this statement, as individual perception is not something that can be simply classified in a way that was satisfactory to a more scientific model. For me, seeing the color green immediately leads me to reflect upon my grandmother and my great deal of pleasant experiences and memories. My perception of the color green, therefore, is wholly distinct from a simplistic explanation of the hue or tone of the color. Another interesting influence of Gestalt psychology was physics professor Ernst Mach. Mach used his physics background to explain that perceptions of objects do...

...information plaque). The painting depicts a small purple sailboat with a green and red sail in the sea underneath an enormous, majorly, pink cloud in the light blue sky with two other red sailboats and purple steam boats. The enormous pink cloud and the light blue sky is reflected into the sea and the purple sailboat has a dark reflection in the sea as well. The sailboat is in the center of the painting while the cloud is above and behind the sailboat. The other sailboats are to the right and behind the main sailboat and the steam boats are all the way to the right in the far distance. The time of day in the work, which can be determined from the color of the cloud and sky, appears to be sunset and the sun is off canvas at the top left corner. The viewer is meant to be looking at this view of the boats and massive cloud from land and to be peering at the landscape from the very edge of the water due to no land being shown. The primary focus of the painting is the sailboat that is located within the foreground of the painting. The focus divides the painting nearly symmetrically, the sky and the lake are almost even and the boat is right in the center to keep the painting balanced. The sailboat also in a way creates a dark arrow that makes the eye go to the pink cloud. The painting contains primary colors (blue, red, and yellow). There are many hues of purple for darker clouds, pink for the cloud, light greens for the sea and sail, various blues for the sky and shadow for the pink...

...breakfast sandwich. The sandwich and the athletes represent the fact that a good breakfast will promote a effective workout that you will be pleased with. ESPN continues to show the same types of ads, perfect and fit athletes who eat healthy and drink sport drinks such as Gatorade, or active women who want the tampons made specifically for athletic body movements, so they can continue to do their day to day activities. These professional athletes model their product by focusing in on the product and what is it doing for them, whether it be hydration, filling their stomachs, or getting them through that one week of mood swings and bloating. This advertisement is slightly different; the athletes are not the only main focus in the advertisement. The breakfast sandwich in the bottom left corner along with “dive into a scrumptious breakfast” in large font on the lower half of the page. This draws attention to what the rugby team would have for breakfast before training or competing. What really catches the eye in this advertisement is the color coordination. Everything needing to be noticed is colored to stand out in the dark green background, but the extra information about the sandwich and the rugby tournament are different...

...puberty so they still have baby fat. The symbol that these plump children represent is innocence and purity. The poem continues into describing how there children are playing in the wet dirt on the exterior of the pool. The dirt is getting wet by the blue pool waters so the children are now slipping and sliding in the dirt which gives the appearance of oiled skin. “slide and tumble, oiled, in the slippery sun.” When water is touched it moves into wave patterns which is the image. the symbol of “churning the water; or-seamstresses-cut and sew with jack-knives its satins invisibly” is described by the movements a child's curious hand makes as its swirled around through the water. The last section in the poem states “and it greens the grass, greens the hanging leaf, greens Adam and Eden, greens little eve” i feel like the refers to how grass is usually thought to be green, when its green its is usually healthy and pure, the water that is splashing out of the pool is what revives the surrounding grass and leaves. The author is also drawing a mental image of Adam in the garden of Eden watching how as time goes by and the grass gets greener and more beautiful, Eve is also becoming happier which results in her...

...Portrait, the subject matter depicted is like the title aptly puts, himself, albeit in a more unconventional and abstracted manner. This is as opposed to the more realistic manner in which van Gogh has depicted himself in Self Portrait with Bandaged Ear. In Self Portrait, Affandi has characterised himself as a semi-abstracted figure against a plain background, with the highly detailed face in stark contrast with his torso, which as suggested by its dark green contour only (without any colouring within), appears to only be vaguely apparent. Affandi also seems to be placing extreme focus on the human emotions or mood, presumably meant to be conveyed by the extremely detailed expression on the face that he has painted. In fact, everything is lumped together (in fact, most of the colours used) on the face in his painting. Upon closer examination, one would find that Affandi’s face as depicted in this work is actually more of a mass of red rather than anything else, and lined with blobs of different colours (namely yellow and green) presumably to represent the hair. Details on the face are not clearly made out, rather only a faint outline of the eyebrows, eyes and nose is apparent. This is as opposed to Self Portrait with Bandaged Ear in which van Gogh has similarly depicted himself, albeit in a far more realistic manner, where all his facial features are clearly visible and modelled. Close attention is also paid to his body, clothing (as evidenced by the precise and exacting brushstrokes...

...- The Night Cafe I visited www.artgallery.yale.edu and came across Vincent Van Gogh’s The Night Café (1988). I followed the instructions on “How to begin the Critical Analysis Essay (Extra Credit)”. As I was clicking through the collection at a “fairly good pace,” I stumbled on The Night Café. Its image stayed in my head for whatever reason. I finished looking at the collection and went right back to it. The painting must have struck a chord in my head, but getting into why that chord was struck would require another type of assignment. The Night Café is oil on canvas, from the art movement known as impressionism. The Night Café uses a display of optical and psychological color though harsh, textured swirls of impasto, which is the think buildup of paint on the surface of the canvas. One of his most interesting paintings (I think) is this one. The place he hung out at night drinking. The work depicts the interior of the Café de la Gare, an all night tavern owned by Joseph-Michel Ginoux and his wife Marie. It was located at 41 Rue Du Temple, 4th St. Paris, France. It is known that Van Gogh visited disreputable drinking establishments. The bare setting of the Café de la Gare served as inspiration to Van Gogh. The asymmetrical composition serves the purpose of communicating a feeling of unbalance. The psychological elements of this painting gave it unity: The disproportioned elements in the composition, the odd placement of objects, and the odd point of view...

...RED, WHITE, BLUE AND YOU Or, The Color of Politics An Essay by Charles Ebeling Presented at the Chicago Literary Club Election Eve, November 5, 2012 Copyright 2012 Charles Ebeling Dedicated to the memory of my good friend and neighbor Marshall J. Goldsmith Who was my guest at the Literary Club, October 24, 2011 Some us recall a great 1986 film called “The Color of Money,” and no, cynics, it wasn’t about politics. That film earned Paul Newman the Oscar for Best Actor as a pool hustler and stakehorse, who enjoyed a glass or two of J.T.S. Brown Kentucky bourbon, my favorite beverage from college days. But, unless I’ve missed a documentary or foreign film along these lines, I haven’t yet seen a dramatization called “The Color of Politics.” Yes, there is such a thing as “The Politics of Color,” but as social commentary, not as a film title. “The Color of Politics” is equally real though, and has a long history. I first dabbled in the palette of politics on election eve, 2008, when I presented before the club on that occasion an essay I’d titled “One Collage Too Many,” painting...

...Name: Instructor: Course Date: Art Report; critique Critique refers to a systematic and discipline analysis which is always written or can be presented in an oral form. In most cases, critique has been viewed as the acts of analyzing documents, literary work or pictures with an aim of making judgments that are negative and trying to find some faults in the analysis. However, critique does contain some form of recognizing the merits entailed in the subject matter and can be given a philosophical view of a practice that involves doubt. The entire sense of critique has been contemporarily been influenced by the critique of enlighten which involves authority and prejudice. This is always shaped by the autonomy and emancipation from the authorities in the political fronts and the religious authorities. The Florida Scene Florida scene is a pictorial presentation by Thomas Moran. Moran in his presentation greatly bases on nature, which largely is in the center of influencing his art. In his scene, Thomas uses shapes that are predominantly organic and gives his art the natural and environmental taste. Analysis of the artwork The landscape in the artwork presents an irregular scope on the southern side of the landscape accompanied by vegetation which is often rounded and carved. The artwork has the sky and the ocean too. Visible are some trees which have their branches curved and there is a layer of wild flowers and...
