Greenhill Community Center Case Study
March 28, 2013
Introduction
According to The Oxford Handbook of Public Management (Ferlie, et. all, 2005) nongovernmental organizations can face complex management dilemmas when dealing with growth.
There are four key challenges that are faced: assessing performance, governance, sustainability and infrastructure support, and collaboration and cooperation. At Greenhill Community Center we see an organization that is looking to bring about change (and in particular growth). The board of trustees unanimously agrees on a promising young woman, Leslie, to help move them towards their goal. What they get is someone who does in fact grow the community center, but at the expense of the staff’s job satisfaction.
Overview
Leslie, a recent MBA graduate, found an executive director position at Greenhill Community
Center. She started the position with “great enthusiasm” but quickly found many of the employees to be upset by the change in management and resistant to any changes she tried to implement. The staff was upset because they no longer felt included in the operations of the organization and felt at a distance with the trustees, while Leslie felt the trustees preferred to work exclusively with her position in order to complete business more quickly.
At Leslie’s six-month review she showed the trustees a positive performance, noting that she had already raised $41,000 in grants and subsequently requested an 8% raise, which the trustees granted. About two months later staff began to question the merits of her raise and made complaints regarding the exclusion of staff from the trustee meetings (previously staff was included in those meetings, but Leslie had stopped staff from attending shortly after arriving at

the new position). Some staff took their complaints to the board of trustees where they

Gendered Museums

...Western society, women have much to remodel in a museological world that is still dipped in a long-established and well-governed androcentrism. Museums are extraordinarily powerful institutions across the globe today. They present the past and present in ways that rule entire schools of thought, dictate truth and notions of common sense, and shape the ways in which people perceive and interpret meaning through culture and history. In assessing the status of modern museum culture, it is important to understand the politics by which an institution runs and governs itself. This issue is often overlooked in museum studies; historically museums have acted at their own discretion without much, if any, cultural, political, or social supervision; thus, despite a reputation for being objective, museums are themselves very subjective inventions of modern civilisation (Hooper-Greenhill 1992:3). Upon personal or organisational taste, certain objects are represented and interpreted, revealing what a widely respected educational machine values as important and true. It is through feminist critique of the museum that we see, like most structures in society, the museum is a...

Association of Attention-Deficit Disorder and the Dopamine Transporter Gene

...3Department of Pediatrics, and 4Department of Medicine, University of Chicago, Chicago Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Department of Psychiatry, 'Laboratory of Developmental Neuroscience, Harris Center for Developmental Studies, Summary Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) has been shown to be familial and heritable, in previous studies. As with most psychiatric disorders, examination of pedigrees has not revealed a consistent Mendelian mode of transmission. The response of ADHD patients to medications that inhibit the dopamine transporter, including methylphenidate, amphetamine, pemoline, and bupropion, led us to consider the dopamine transporter as a primary candidate gene for ADHD. To avoid effects of population stratification and to avoid the problem of classification of relatives with other psychiatric disorders as affected or unaffected, we used the haplotype-based haplotype relative risk (HHRR) method to test for association between a VNTR polymorphism at the dopamine transporter locus (DAT1) and DSM-IR-diagnosed ADHD (N = 49) and undifferentiated attention-deficit disorder (UADD) (N = 8) in trios composed of father, mother, and affected offspring. HHRR analysis revealed significant association between ADHD/UADD and the 480-bp DAT1 allele (X2 7.51, 1 df, P = .006). When cases of UADD were dropped from the analysis, similar results were found (X2 7.29, 1 df, P = .007). If these findings are replicated, molecular analysis of the dopamine transporter gene may identify...

At Risk Asped

...New Era University SCHOOL OF GRADUATE STUDIES New Era, Quezon City COMMON PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED BY STUDENTS “AT RISK” IN A REGULAR CLASS AS PERCEIVED BY GRADE 8 REGULAR AND SPED TEACHERS IN BATASAN HILLS NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL BY Cupido, Luigi T. DR. ESTRELLA N. SAN ANDRES FEBRUARY 22, 2014 Chapter 1 The Problem and It’s Background Special Education is a privilege and a basic human right for any individual students. It is granted for those who are diagnosed with developmental disadvantages and students with special needs. This type of education is progressing so as the discovery of different types of exceptionalities and its spectrums. The wise variety of its type and spectrums helps educators identify the corresponding needs of special education learners. Children with special needs are now being placed in a self-contained class for most public or private schools. Though, there were some students who are disadvantaged or even behind the slow performing ones who are not yet recognized. These types are often labelled by diagnosticians as students “At Risk.” From the term itself, it indicates potential exceptionalities that may possibly arise. The main difficulty that could possibly be anticipated among the so called “At Risk” students is the misleading concepts towards them. Most teachers would take them as regular students and some may call them “slow learners,” “out of school”...

Go Int0 Business

...DO YOU WANT TO GO INTO BUSINESS? WHY GO INTO BUSINESS Entrepreneurship is a way of life. Being entrepreneurial means being able to identify, start, and maintain a viable and profitable business, particularly a small enterprise. People spend most of their lives working for someone else. Some people eventually rise to positions of wealth and power, while the rest languish in unchallenging and low-paying jobs. On the other hand, there are a select few who strike it out on their own rather than work for others. They put up their own enterprise. You may ask: “Why should I risk my resources in an unpredictable business when I could hold a stable job with permanent tenure and an assurance of a regular monthly income without any risk?” In other words, why be an entrepreneur rather than an employee? Having your own business has tremendous rewards, but be sure to weigh prospective returns against potential risks and losses. REWARDS OF GOING INTO BUSINESS OR ENTREPRENEURSHIP Having unlimited opportunity to make money When you have your own business, you will most certainly have unlimited potential to earn money. How much money you earn depends on the time and effort you put into your enterprise. Successful entrepreneurs have earned their wealth and prestige through hard work and by having the right product for the right market at the right time. Being your own boss As manager of your business, you make the decisions for your enterprise and take full responsibility...

...Insights from Northeastern India Walter C. Ladwig III Predoctoral Fellow Miller Center of Public Affairs University of Virginia A paper prepared for International Studies Association Annual Conference 16-18 February 2009 New York ***Note: This paper is a provisional study of India’s attempts to manage separatist insurgency movements in the Northeast, consequently it provides only a preliminary analysis of the counterinsurgency campaigns in Mizoram and Nagaland.*** 1 From the time of its independence in 1947, India has been plagued by a host of separatist movements as the central government has struggled to integrate a number of religious, racial and ethnic groups into a single multicultural state. Impressively, despite facing a multitude of secessionist movements, India has yet to lose any of its territory. This paper examines the Indian government’s response to the outbreak of separatist violence in Nagaland and Mizoram in the state of Assam. Not only were these insurgencies the Republic of India’s first experience with the phenomenon of separatist insurgency, they were among the most severe. They required an untested government and military to adapt to a form of political warfare with which they had little experience. Through a process of trial and error, India developed an approach to political violence in the Northeast that would guide its response to future insurgencies. The Mizo case is also significant because it was India’s first successfully concluded counterinsurgency...
