Do you remember the time when Netflix was only eight dollars a month and you’ve just started watching a new TV show for the first time? But, before you know it, you are watching every episode a thousand times because the show is so great and you can’t get enough of what you’re watching, no matter how many times you see it. Well, that’s how I remember the time before I got hooked into Grey’s Anatomy. It was the summer before my Freshman year of high school and I was sitting on my bed scrolling...

Research Paper

...Valerie Hernandez 12/5/14 Prof. Scott Brown Research Paper The Hollywood entertainment industry has typically treated as well as portrayed homosexuals as subject of negative stereotypes.  When Gay representation was introduced to popular culture, the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender community was oppressed from the start. Later, film and television attempted to create well-rounded homosexual characters but focused in depicting gay stereotypes and how they shaped the public's impression of the gay community. These stereotypes created a non-threatening sissy gay and a warrior lesbian. Throughout history, heterosexual men are seen to be strong and proud of their masculinity and homosexuals have been perceived as lacking masculinity and feminine. Gay characters started to emerge in the 1990’s in both television and movies. Ellen DeGeneres and her character Ellen Morgan coming out under much scrutiny on the TV show ‘Ellen,’ which eventually led to her own talk show. The movie The Birdcage, with Robin Williams was about a gay cabaret owner and his drag queen companion. Gays and lesbians have been around for a long time, especially in Hollywood, but more people started to come out in the 90’s. With the popularity of shows like Will and Grace, which feature leading gay characters, as well as the show Friends, Ross Gellar’s lesbian ex-wife Carol, marries her partner and happily co-parents her son with Ross. Over a period of time we are slowly seeing gay, lesbian, and bi-sexual...

...Abstract Purpose – The aim of the paper is to discuss a possible extension of narrative analysis to a new medium of expression of consumer behaviour, specifically YouTube. Design/methodology/approach – Marketing and consumer behaviour studies often apply narrative analysis to understand consumption. The consumer is a source of introspective narratives that are studied by scholars. However, consumption has a narrative nature in itself and consumers are also storytellers. YouTube is a new context in which subjects tell stories to an audience through self-made videos and re-edited TV programs. After defining the pros and cons of different approaches to the study of YouTube, narrative analysis is presented as a possible means of understanding YouTube. Findings – Some preliminary evidence is presented by discussing several YouTube videos. These indicate that YouTube content can be better understood as stories, rather than example of other approaches, such as visual analysis, media studies, videography, and others. Research limitations/implications – From the analysis conducted, preliminary managerial implications can be drawn. It seems unlikely that normal TV broadcasters will be substituted by YouTube videos. For the most part, YouTube content draws its sense and shared meaning from the major TV shows and series. The discursive nature of YouTube is also an indication of how to deal with this new medium as a company or researcher. Originality/value – The paper is an attempt to open up new...

Sociology of Gender

...defined as a determination of male or female on the basis of a set of socially agreed-upon biological criteria. Music Videos such as Stupid Girls and If I Were A Boy by singers Pink and Beyonce respectively demonstrate clearly the assumptions or categorizations we evoke simply by using the terms girl or boy. Although the topic of gender in sociology is vast, this paper focuses on how gender is reproduced and how the gendered body is displayed in society. There are three ways in which gender is reproduced in society. It is reproduced through the family, education and the media. From birth begins gendered expectations. According to the social norm, the color pink is mainly associated as a feminine color and the color blue masculine. Family and friends who go to see the birth of a baby girl fill the hospital room with pink balloons, teddy bears with pink ribbons and if a boy was born the room would be filled with presents which are blue in color. Growing up, girls receive presents such dollhouses and kitchen sets which reinforce their femininity. Parents raise their boys and girls differently. Even though research shows that boys at an early age (around 2 years) are just as interested in playing with the same toys girls play with, parents negatively reinforce the more feminine toys. Even the household tasks that boys and girls are given are gendered. Boys generally take out the garbage and girls do the dishes, set the table. Gender is also reproduced by education. Schools...

Trans

...Born This Way - A Research Paper on Transgender Everyone has a gender; it is a thing affects everything in our lives. It affects how we act like and look like every day. However, have you ever thought about what is gender? Gender is the thing that describes the characteristics that a society or culture delineates as masculine or feminine (Nobelius). Today, most of the countries define gender base on the physical and genetic sexuality at birth. There is at least one transgender person, whose self-gender identity is different from the assigned gender sex at birth, in each 100 people (NCTE). Under the rules of our society, there are at least 70 million people living in the world without their identity. Loss of identity also comes with life-threatening discriminations and inequities to them. To solve this serious problem and to improve the harmony of the society, gender’s definition should be redefined to include transgender and not only base on the physical sexuality at birth. Before everything else, the most important question is: what is transgender? From the definition of Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, transgender is the state of one's self gender identity not matching one's assigned sex which based on physical sexuality at birth (GLAAD). To be easier to imagine, I would use a simple example. Imagine that your name is Tom. One day, while you are sleeping, someone assigns “Peter” as your name. After that, everyone starts calling you “Peter” while you can never...
