...First published in 1968, True Grit, authored by Charles Portis, soon became a classic novel for many generations to appreciate. Set during the Wild West, readers can experience the journey of main protagonist Mattie Ross, a teenage girl who is seeking to avenge her father’s death. Mattie is independent, courageous, and has lots of determination. She is willing to sacrifice anything, even one of her limbs, in order to achieve her goal of revenge on Tom Chaney, the murderer of her father. Although True Grit does not give input on Mattie’s musical tastes, based on her personality and experiences in life, one could conclude that a hypothetical present-day Mattie, who would still be teenager, might have enjoyed songs such as “Fight Song,” “Move...

...True Grit In the novel True Grit by Charles Portis many characters earn redemption from previously regrettable actions or character flaws. This is a recurring motif within the story, and it shows a sense of realism amongst the characters. Portis uses characters such as Rooster Cogburn, LaBoeuf, and Mattie Ross’s horse Little Blackie to show that people aren't always who they appear to be and are susceptible to change. We first hear of Rooster Cogburn from the sheriff when Mattie asks about the U.S. marshals. The sheriff says “The meanest one is Rooster Cogburn. He is a pitiless man, double-tough, and fear don't enter into his thinking. He loves to pull a cork.” (Portis 25). Maddie sets high expectations for Rooster after hearing this; however, he lets her down constantly after she discovers he is a dumb, fat, one-eyed drunk, and a bad shot. Rooster later tries to desert Mattie twice and he also leads them right into the smugglers den with Tom Chaney and Lucky Ned Pepper. However, Rooster makes up for his shortcomings when he saves Mattie’s life at the end of the book. She is stuck in a pit with poisonous snakes and bats while an undead Tom Chaney leans in to taunt her. Rooster comes from behind and knocks him hard into the pit with his rifle. Rooster then escorts Mattie to the nearest doctor, getting her there as quickly as possible. Without Rooster, she would’ve been killed and his heroic actions, which go against everything we knew about him, earn his redemption in...

...MOVIE REVIEW: TRUE GRIT 1 Movie Review: True Grit The movie I chose to review is the 2010 remake of “True Grit.” This movie stars Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon and Hailee Steinfeld as the main characters. Jeff Bridges plays Rooster Cogburn, Matt Damon plays LaBoeuf and Hailee Steinfeld plays Mattie Ross, Josh Brolin portrays Tom Chaney, the man who murdered Mattie’s father. In the following paragraphs of this paper the following will be discussed: when it was produced, the basic plot line, the themes address regarding the West, the accuracy and portrayal of the characters in relation to the West, the time period and historical setting, and lastly the usefulness of this movie for someone who is interested in the history of the American West. When Produced Ethan and Joel Coen (also known as ‘The Coen Brothers’) directed as well as produced the 2010 adaptation. Steven Spielberg was one of the executive producers. Since this version of “True Grit” was produced in 2010 it is written from a twenty-first century perspective. Although produced so recently, the film was based in 1880 which gives it a one hundred and thirty year gap in time. This tells one that the film had many modern influences. Basic Plot The movie opens with Proverbs 28:1a displayed on the screen, it reads, “The wicked flee when none pursueth.” A song that sounds like the hymn “Leaning on the Everlasting Arms” is gently being played on the piano. It is called “The Wicked Flee” and is...

...In the book True Grit Mattie Ross takes revenge on her father’s killer. Frank Ross was shot by Tom Chaney, and Mattie is angry and is willing to do everything in her power to see to it he pays. The U.S. Marshal named Rooster Cogburn helps Mattie to find him. According to a sheriff, Rooster “is a pitiless man, double-tough, and fear doesn’t enter into his thinking.” (Portis 25). Mattie is on a mission and she won’t stop until Chaney is dead. Mattie character seems to have a strong mindset. She is very head strong, and independent because she negotiated prices with the man to go with her, she pointed the gun at Chaney and forced him to come with her although he refused and she ended up shooting him. Anyone wouldn’t figure that a 14 year old girl would go look for her dad, and she wouldn’t go with two grown men. Mattie got older and she didn’t have kids or have time for marriage. She didn’t hear anything from Cogburn since the journey of killing Chaney. She remains a head strong woman and continues to look up to her dad even though he has deceased. Mattie takes responsibility from her dad’s death, she shot Chaney, and she...

...In general, people needs to strive for increasing proficiency of knowledge and also diligence for cognitive development to sustain in a competitive world. Grit and intelligence are the major factors that influence intellectual development. Grit is determination and enthusiasm for long term objectives (Duck-worth, Peterson, Matthews & Kelly 2007). However, IQ is associated with intelligence. It is crucial to discuss which out of hard work and intelligence buttress people to achieve their goals. Many pieces of research are carried out in order to analyse what factor governs the success or achievements of people. According to Duckworth, Peterson, Matthews & Kelly (2007), grit is mandatory to achieve success. However, according to Hambrick & Meinz (2011) intellectual ability predicts success. This essay revolves around the work of Duckworth, Peterson, Matthews & Kelly (2007) and Ericsson, Prietula, & Cokely (2007) who argue in the favour of perseverance,...

Ways to Improve My Grit I noticed throughout the test I had one question in particular that I had answered less than exceptional on. “It being difficult to maintain focus on projects that take more than a few months to complete.” I believe some of this is due to the fact that I am a patient person, but eventually my patience runs thin. This causes me to get\ discouraged and more willing to give up. Although, I have noticed throughout the years, as I get older, that my patience and my discouragement become less and less. I can...

...On the GRIT test I scored 3.67 out of 5 points. Based on the norms presented in class, this is higher than the average adult age 25 or older and lower than the average cadet, but within the standard deviation for both. Common traits of grit include people having higher levels of education, more job stability, higher grades, and more self-forgiveness. On the self-control test I scored 35 out of 65 points. This is just below the average for undergraduate students and falls within the range of the standard deviation. People who score high on self-control are reported to have higher grades, fewer problems with controlling impulses, greater psychological well-being, and stronger interpersonal relationships. I have seen these traits manifest in myself through many facets of life, but especially my academic experiences. When it comes to completing assignments, I am driven to put forth my all to doing a great job on an assignment. For example, in junior year of high school I had a final paper in English that was a minimum of 10 pages long. I dutifully applied myself and produced a 12 page...

...Grit vs. Intelligence During the short video the Psych talked about having the Perseverance to overcome anything and sticking with your guns to achieve true success in life. Don't we all know people who are extremely smart, maybe they even test in the genius range on IQ tests, but they end up being far less successful than expected. You might also know someone who has average intelligence but is passionate about what they do and they stay the course until they see success, even if it takes years to achieve. Dr.Duckworth's research showed that students who measured high on the Grit Scale got better grades and also had more job success after graduation than those who scored lower. Grit is defined by Dr. Duckworth as the combination of passion and perseverance. Passion is defined in the dictionary as "a powerful emotion" that when applied towards a career or endeavor, can keep a person motivated and moving forward. Perseverance is defined as "steady persistence in a course of action." That means the willingness to work hard in the face of adversity and to keep going despite setbacks. Although there are very intelligent people on the face of this earth, a good 65% of them have almost zero drive and end up getting bored with their positions and want to move on to something else. Like the good doctor was saying, saying that most of the IVY league, Yale students who are majoring in law, end up not wanting to be lawyers and since they have enough credits to be a doctor the students...

...The movie, True Grit, was a very entertaining film. I chose to watch the newest version of the film that was created in 2010. I have never watched any other versions of this film before this one, so I won’t have any other version to base it off of. Although, I have watched many western films and shows before. In my personal opinion, I think the casting of the characters was great. I thought the actors played their parts wonderfully. I’m aware of the real life actors outside of the movie, and I think they got into character and didn’t show any signs of their real self. I think that’s important in a movie. I was able to view the actors as their characters due to their great acting. I really like the character, Mattie, she is very strong willed...

...Why I chose this book... I am a huge fan of Christian fiction authors for their ability to glorify God through their writing. Harnessing their creativity and God given talent these authors generate wholesome entertainment to suit the tastes of almost any reader. This week I took the plunge into Grit of Berth and Stone by Lisa Dunn. It was a sword and dagger wielding YA Fantasy novel packed with adventure, biblical applications, and hope. My thoughts... In the first few chapters, readers are drawn in by a tale that closely resembles the Hunger Games. These opening scenes allow readers to glimpse a society in which the family unit has been destroyed. Sires (men) have the option to claim their children and train them for their future testing or to ignore them. Many Dames (women) live in abject poverty - stealing, foraging, or fighting for survival. We meet 16 year old Grit as she is undergoing her Final branding. This ritual precedes her “test” which will determine the course of her life. I was intrigued by the fast-paced escape and evasion narrative of Grit’s testing, but as it concluded I felt the story really...

...In the past, I have had a problem with acknowledging that hardships that brought me to Spelman. I tried to brush them off as simple obstacles that everyone overcomes on their journey. When I turned twenty, something sparked inside of me and made me re-evaluate my life past, present, and future. That is when I discovered and defined grit for myself. Grit is a deep, multi-faceted courage and character that that allows an individual to overcome challenges. Everyone is born with it, but true comes to the surface when an individual is faced with a challenge that change the direction of their destiny. I feel that I have shown grit in many ways throughout my life, but two of the major examples are through forgiveness and perseverance. These may...

...Grit Test- Lab 1 On the scale of 1 to 5, my grit test score was a 2.57, I gave every answer my time and was full honest but for some reason it just doesn’t make much sense. This test of grit is supposed to measures conscientiousness courage, excellence, resilience, and endurance versus perfection. In the courage part when it talks about fear of failure is described as, “a debilitating disorder characterized by an unhealthy aversion to risk. Some symptoms include anxiety, mental blocks, and perfectionism…” Even though I don’t think I have a disorder I’m pretty conscious with the fact that I do have a fear of failure. In fact, when it comes to perfectionism, I end up spending more time on the final presentation and every little detail rather than focus on the excellence of a project. Age is a very important in determining level of grit in a population. Individual experience about when being persistent allows you to figure out which things are worth doing. It may be worth someone you may be paying for services or solution to a problem, but it may not be worth pursuing a modeling career at the age of 30 and being 60 pounds overweight. Learning to pick my fights is not a reflection of my grittiness, but somewhat realistic of the human condition, which is almost always disappointing. Most of the tips listed on ways to improve grit said I was “realistic optimist” (Jotski, K.). This worked for me a couple quarters back when I chose to be the leader for a debate. ...

...At first glimpse the town comes off as reserved and highly business centered, however underneath the surface there is a feeling of unstableness and extreme lack of morals. When first being introduced to the town there is a strong symmetrical aspect, creating a sense of structure, one after another, business buildings compacted side by side, line the edges of the open dirt road. An ambiance of superiority and conservativeness ooze out of the vastness of the western town, as pairs of two travel about in a sauntering directness, dressed in sober blacks, while the end of the road fogs out in a misty view of the auspicious atmosphere. The hanging grounds portray the reality, of which the former level of respect is diminished, contrasted by the injustfulness clearly observed as three “criminals” are being set to their hanging. The townees gather like a herd of animals, gawking in an impatient wait for the men to be executed, showing a sort of gruesome excitement for the occasion. Proceeding down the line, each man is given a chance for a few final words, the first grubby looking and untamed, shouts words of condemnation into the crowd, claiming “there are many out there worse than I”. Beside the angry convict, the next man is blubbering his innocence as tears roll down his exhausted face, while the final man whom is an indian is revoked the ability to speak as his head is brutally shoved into a brown sack, seconds before released to their death. Witnessing this, it is clear that...

...The first common western trope used in True Grit is the good guy vs. bad guy. In this film, there are several “good guys.” First, there is Rooster whom at first seems mysterious and cold. However, his bravery and nobility shine through as he rescues Mattie from the snake pit and and tirelessly carries her to safety after her horse falters. The other obvious good guy is LaBouef, who returns to helps to rescue both Mattie & Chaney towards the end of the movie. Our two protagonists spend the movie hunting down the “bad guys”, who in this film are Chaney (the heartless renegade who murdered Mattie’s dad), and Ned (his boss and fellow renegade). The second common trope used in this movie is a final showdown. In a grassy pasture, Rooster comes face...
