People with different ideas and perspectives can come together and be successful, but there must be ground rules. A team affords all members an equal opinion and a united decision. It is individuals joined together that make a group. Group communication is the collaboration between the participants of a group of individuals. The group has a common subject or decision that requires the attention of the individuals. A quality or valuable group communication needs an organizer and members with a common goal. When making a decision in a group, they can communicate both verbally and written, depending on the issues on the table. Strategies used to promote individual and group communication include good listening skills. Each member should remember their manners such as no over speaking. Vocal tone is important in a group. The volume is as important as the tone. It is not necessary to yell in a small room or whisper in a large room. There will be those who enjoy taking the wheel but everyone should be heard, especially in a smaller group. Conflicts or disagreements should be resolved immediately. You will notice that your teams go through five stages of group development: forming, storming, norming, performing, and adjourning (Robbins & Judge, 2011). These stages are necessary for relationships to form within the groups, and I will elaborate on the role of group communication in this process. During the forming stage, members may experience some uncertainty because they need to find their place in the group (Beebe & Masterson, 2009). The storming stage follows, and this is a time of conflict as individuals establish their roles. In the norming stage the friction in the group decreases as members become comfortable with their position. (Beebe & Masterson, 2009). Next the group will enter the performing stage. This is when you can expect the highest productivity. Adjourning can be an emotional experience for the group because the assignment comes to an end, and the individuals who have derived a sense of accomplishment from their efforts are re-tasked (Beebe & Masterson, 2009). The company that I am currently working for is a locally owned and operated credit union. There are many branches throughout the northern half of our state and each branch is set up in different groups to create a functional team/business. Each branch consist of; tellers, loan officers, cashiering supervisors, and branch managers.
