A team that has clear goals and strategies in place is more likely to succeed even when faced with the greatest types of adversity. In the movie, Apollo 13, the cast of characters is faced with achieving a goal under severe pressure and numerous problems, that if not successfully attained will cost people their lives. [1] The organization had a common goal that was securely set in the minds of each team member and each member was well aware of what failure could ultimately cost the entire organization. Even under this tremendous pressure filled climate, the team was able to use different types of decision making techniques in order to be effective in solving the issue facing them. While the movie was of course dramatized to reach audiences, it was based on a true story. This gives the emotions, personal interaction and problem solving techniques projected by the film a strong basis as to how teams should aspire to function in today’s environment. ...Apollo 13- Leadership during a crisis Lessons learned from Gene Kranz Introduction: Every employee of NASA should known the tragic event of Apollo 13; At that time in 1970 the three astronauts James Lovell, Fred Haise and Jack Swigert had to abort their mission to flight to the moon due to an explosion of an oxygen tank. They had to fight against, carbon dioxide, coldness, a lack of energy and the almost certain death. Despite of a distance of 205,000 miles the three men made it back to earth alive in the Lunar Module Aquarius (Lovell et al. 2006). This was only possible with the help of the Mission Control and the Flight Director Gene Kranz which worked together as an excellent team and came up with a richness of ideas to save the lives of the astronauts. Although it was one of the darkest and most tragic missions of NASA, it also can be learned a lot from this crisis. Apart from the technical knowledge which has been obtained from Apollo 13, a lot of conclusion can be made for leaders. Even with the best technology, it would not have been possible to bring the crew home safely, if not such a strong leader like Gene Kranz have led to rescue of Apollo 13. What lessons can be learned from his leadership style and decisions for future NASA projects will be analyzed and explained from a psychological point of view in this report. Despite it’s validity as a literary technique, the inclusion of violent scenes in literature serve much more than the simple purpose of pushing a plot along a set of structured points. Scenes of violence provoke thought in areas ranging from human nature to the nature of sin, thoughts that often can’t be provoked my images of calm, sublime, or tranquility. Extreme violence, juxtaposed with other scenes, provides insight into the amazing nature of human capability and human nature. In Dante Alighieri’s Inferno there is an abundance of violence that is illustrated in varying ways. Despite the copious inclusion of violence scenes throughout the text, violence does not appear throughout the literary work for its own sake. As one reads on through the Inferno, it provides it’s own clarity. As the levels of Hell increase, the severity of violence does so as well. The violence that appears occurs in different fashions, sometimes mentally, sometimes physically and many times both simultaneously.
