Growing Up for Me Growing up for me was different but similar to the way Jeanette Walls grew up in The Glass Castle. Like Rex Walls, my dad drank and smoked cigarettes and went drinking every night. I was too young to realize it at the time, but now it scares me whenever he goes to a bar. He has never gotten physical once he has too much to drink, but he does like to yell and cuss. It scares me to this day. Due to my father smoking in wherever we lived, I can’t be in a confined space with cigarette smoke because it makes me nauseous to be around a lot of people who smoke. That was also one of the smells that were familiar to me whenever he was around. Not only did he smoke, but so did his friends that hung around us whenever I would go up to the bowling alley with him for his bowling league. Another thing that is similar but different is the moving. …show more content…
Soon, I started to get him to go to church and he stopped going to bars and being out all night. Though it took him longer to quit smoking than to quit drinking, he managed to stop that too. Now that he was sober, we began to create an actual father and daughter relationship and I thought we would always be on good terms. But that suddenly changed when he met my stepmother. That is another thing that Jeanette didn’t have to go through and she is lucky. Once my dad got married, our relationship quickly fell apart and I became independent and I taught myself to shut people out. The marriage lasted for nearly four years, but it ended in a divorce and sent my dad back to the bar. I waited up for him most nights but it mostly ended with me going to bed in tears or hurt. That only lasted two months and now, he’s doing better again. I hope that if he steps back into a bar, he never picks up a drink ever

Personal Statement: Putting Thoughts To Paper

...Putting Thoughts to Paper For several years in school, I dreaded writing academic papers because I found many of the topics monotonous, provoking little desire in me to work hard. The writing process intimidated me because I was often unaware as to where I should begin a paper and once I did, how I should develop my thoughts in an effective manner. My appreciation of writing, both academically and artistically, did not surface until my sophomore year in high school. When I transferred from public to private school, I realized that my writing skills were not as strongly developed as many of my fellow classmates. This feeling of inadequacy motivated me to seek help from my teachers and peers. By the end of first semester sophomore year, my...

Research Plan

...University of Phoenix Material Research Plan As part of your research plan, you must first draft a research question for your research paper that will guide the rest of your writing. A research question, which is more specific and focused than a general topic, is the question that your research paper will answer. For example, if your general area of interest is social security, a possible research question might ask, “How can low-income families save more money if the United States had a reformed social security plan that includes personal retirement accounts?” As you develop a research question, remember that you need to research sources to support your topic. Do not pick a one-sided question that will limit your research. Instead, develop a research question that lends itself to further exploration and debate—a question you genuinely want to know the answer to. Try to pick a research question that is neither too broad (covering too much) or too narrow (covering too little). It should be broad enough to be discussed in a short research paper. I was the child who other children confided in or came to when they wanted to talk or needed help with a problem. When growing up it was not common for black people to go to counseling. Families kept secrets among themselves and sometimes those secrets came back to haunt people many years later. When faced with problems people relied on their spiritual beliefs, the support of the family, and sometimes close friends. If a girl had gotten pregnant and not married that would have been kept top secret. Usually a family member would raise the baby and no one would ever speak openly about it. My family had to deal with the death of two of my brothers at young ages. It hurt my mother deeply having to deal with the loss of two children because of violence. These tragedies were never discussed even as we became adults. As I became older I realized that my mother and our entire family should have gotten counseling. It was not until after my mother passed that my uncle shared with me the pain and agony that she had...

In areas of higher population and higher income, crime might occur because of an event in that area that triggered the crime to take place, rather than committing a crime for personal gain. In a research paper, it was stated, “the evidence presented so far suggests that, from a cross-country perspective, there is a robust correlation between the incidence of crimes and the extent of income inequality”(Fajnzylber et al. 2002). Sweatshop

...before the research, like many people, the author’s attitude was old, but after the research, the author’s attitude changed. The author chose the country of Bangladeshi to illustrate her point that working in a sweatshop can be a positive experience for women in developing countries by focusing primarily on one country. First, she argued that sweatshops offer jobs for women and give them the opportunity to improve the quality of their lives. Second, women can experience some independence about managing their finances and choosing their marriages although they have the small income. In this article, the author used others’ opinion, details and facts to develop her topic. The data and cases were enough to prove the argument, and the evidence was very creditable and believable. Although this article argued in the opposite way with me, it gave my article a new perspective about the sweatshop labors. What's more, the author gave me a good evidence about counterargument, which work at the sweatshop is better than no jobs. Then I can refutation this counterargument that the sweatshop conflicts with the moral standards. In this way, I can make my argument stronger. Meyers, C. (2004). Abstract This research paper is on the topic “Bachelorhood vs. Marriage”. Marriage has been a usual norm through centuries. It is a bonding that binds a man and a woman towards a new relationship with the aim of sharing responsibilities, happiness and sorrows till the day they die. It has been a normal phenomenon in the society which recently has been faced by some changes from the new generation. On the other hand, bachelorhood is a state where a man/woman is not married or not in a pair bond. It includes men/women who lives independently, outside of their parents’ home and other institutional settings who are not engaged in a bond of marriage. Psy/201 Wk 6 Intimate Relationship Development

...Social Development Research on: Intimate Relationship Development: During the Transition to Adulthood: Differences by Social Class PSY/201 October 22, 2011 Shawna Harlin-Clifton I chose the article “Intimate Relationship Development: During the Transition to Adulthood: Differences by Social Class” because I have believed there was a difference in intimate relationships when it came to different social classes. This article had various data graphs that informed me of the percentages of teen relationship experiences, teen sexual experiences as well as the percentage of early cohabitation and marriage by family income. It was very interesting to see that in adolescence, class differences shape intimate relationships such as in holding hands, kissing on the mouth or telling someone you loved her. While class differences in relationship experience are not that different, there are vast differences in sexual experiences. Concerning sexual experiences those with higher incomes are least likely to have had sexual experiences and that was the particular trend amongst the males. Class differences are also evident in early marriage and cohabitation rates. According the Study of Adolescent Health Data, collected in 2001, approximately 28 percent of youth who had lower income have cohabited by the age of 20 compared to 15 percent of higher income youth. This is also true concerning marriage. Youth in the lower income category are more likely to arrive at marriage...

Memo to Instructor

...October 29, 2006 TO: Professor Ana White FROM: Joe Bitterly Subject: Student Introduction Writing has always been a task for me that I do not enjoy. I mean don’t get me wrong, it’s not the writing so much that I dislike but more the formatting. That is why I am really dreading this course. I remember writing as far back as in the early years of elementary school. When I would just pick up a pen and write about whatever was on the top of my mind. This could range from some wise tale that a young boy with a growing imagination would think about or a real life story that I would encounter while hunting in the woods with my dad. It was fun back then because there were no worries about proofreading or formatting. The biggest worry I had at that point was spreading my words out as far as I could and seeing how many sheets of paper that I could use so that mine would be longer than my buddies. As the years went on I guess you could say that I always “winged it” when it came to the writing part of the classes. I always waited until the last minute to do any research paper that I had and always managed to get a decent grade on everything, somehow. Once I got older I realized that I could not procrastinate as much because I would run out of time. I flew through English 1301 but struggled a little more with 1302. My memory of those classes and most of the stuff I learned is pretty shady since I took both of them about four years ago, so that means...

I think some people around me are kind of tired of hearing me talk about how great bikes are all the time. I believe bicycles are better than cars. I know some bike advocates still drive cars and get a little touchy about that. I used to drive a car. Growing up in Estacada, it seemed like there was an unwritten law that said "you must drive a car." I obeyed without question. I never even thought about it. One day when I was driving to work, I started noticing the cyclists around me and realizing that I was polluting the atmosphere and wasting resources and they weren't. I realized that I was contributing to the rising rate of asthma and that they weren't. They were part of the solution. I was part of the problem. I knew that the only solution was to buy a bicycle and start commuting by bike. Motor vehicle use degrades the environment in a number of ways, but bicycle use does not. Noise pollution, for instance, is a real problem for those living near highways, but bicycles produce no noise. Congestion creates stress for motor vehicle users, pedestrians, and cyclists, but bicycling does not significantly add to congestion. Adding extra lanes to existing roadways and building limited-access highways can degrade...

About Me

...August 2015 About Me While I was growing up, I would watch college softball on TV with my dad almost every day. Usually once or twice a week we would go to the field, throw a ball, and hit around. I’ve loved it ever since. I play softball here at Limestone College, therefore I am crazy athletic. During high school I was lucky to win MVP on the softball team all 4 years of attending my high school. All kinds of sports interests me really. I currently work at Strawberry Hill USA in Chesnee, South Carolina as an Ice Cream Scooper. Trust me I’m not complaining, we get free ice cream! My favorite subject in school is math, and following would have to be science. I hope to major in Health Care Administration and minor in Business Administration. I am a very energetic and outgoing person. I like to have a good time when I’m involved in any kind of activity; you’ll very rarely see me in a bad mood. I like to live on edge, such as going camping in extravagant places, get spontaneous tattoos and piercings, and even cliff jumping. I hope to go sky diving very soon. My family is very important to me; they’re always there for me when I need them. I’m a very creative person; so writing off the top of my head comes easy to me. When it comes to more research based papers, I do tend to struggle with citing my references properly. I like writing analytical papers about fiction based stories or short narratives that interest me. Usually, if I don’t like the...
