The texts “The Wave” written by Morton Rhue and “Maybe Next Time I’ll Get Off At The Right Stop” by Christine Leskar uses techniques such as Allegory, Irony, Alluding and Symbolism to illustrate Alienation through real-life social issues.
In the text by Leskar, she includes real-life social issues in her fictional writing. She demonstrates the issues using techniques such as Allegory. Allegory is used in “I always found myself here, looking out from the derelict tube”. The train that the character allegedly is on represents their journey through life and how they are excluded. Their life is descending into their own misery which is become a more poplar issue in society with depression.
Morto Rhue also uses techniques such as irony to portray community issues revolved around alienation. The character in the novel “The Wave” Eric says ‘I would never let such a small minority of people rule the majority. This remark is ironic because he will later experience The Wave wholeheartedly. His class shows that it’s easy to make judgements but it’s harder to make an honest decision in the movement. Eric participates in one of the many issues in society such as this one.
The short story “Maybe Tomorrow I’ll Get Off At The Right Stop” has the technique alluding to explore social issues. When Christine Leskar writes “With the happy memories being buried deep down again” we concentrate on the word “again” because it conveys that the character has been down this path before with the possibility of the common mental illness depression or social issue bullying. Leskar gives off the impression that the characters issue is the result of separation from their peers.
“The Wave” uses symbolism to express alienation in social issues. “The word `enemy’ painted in red letters” displays that Laurie is in some kind of trouble, perhaps violence because she is against The Wave. This relates as a social issue because when you go against a popular and trending organization in real-life you automatically get separated from the rest.
Social issues can alienate an individual in real-life. The composers Christine Leskar and Morton Rhue uses several techniques such as Allegory, Irony, Alluding and Symbolism to give their readers an insight to the characters’ lives.
