...Letter to the Editor of the Guardian 'F*ck off". 'Scumbag'. 'W*nker'. This is the lasting impression readers of other popular newspapers are given about teenagers. It's not just limited to newspapers either. It is an ever-growing problem in the journalism industry. Facts are being twisted for the sake of entertaining the reader, are being portrayed as blood-sucking leeches, and teenagers are seen as Red-Bull guzzling degenerates. So how are you going to change this? Many peoples' opinions of teenagers have been based on a select few shows such as Waterloo Road, Skins, and, more recently, Excluded. While many understand that these teens are in the minority many still believe that teens are like this. Fear-mongering news-channels do not help this; rather they serve a daily dose of gang crime and teenage stabbings, which only fuel a stubborn flame that is quickly growing out of control. On the 23rd September 2011, the Daily Mail published an article titled "What sort of example is this to set our children?" about the new TV show "Educating Essex", I will spare you the trouble of reading an insane journalist's lunar ravings and give you a few extracts. 'Insolent children talk back to teachers'. 'Bullying, teenage pregnancy, and young girls caked in makeup.' 'From cyber-bullying to playground scraps'. From this, a less informed person may conclude that this is the case with most teenagers. And the fact that we are called "unruly” and "scumbags" only reinforces the idea we are menaces...

...A1- Sentinel Event A 3 year old female patient was admitted to the Ambulatory Surgical Unit for an outpatient procedure to place tubes in her bilateral ears. The patient’s mother was advised that the procedure would take approximately 45 minutes and that the patient would remain in recovery for at least an hour. The patient’s mother advised that she needed to leave the facility to deal with an older child and gave Greta, the pre-op nurse, her cell phone number and asked that she be contacted if the patient was done with her procedure sooner than the expected time. The patient was then handed off to Rosemary, the OR nurse, who provided care during the procedure. Following the procedure, the patient was handed off to Jon, the recovery nurse, who provided post-anesthesia care until the patient was ready to be transitioned to the discharge area. Jon received report from Rosemary and provided care until the patient awakened. While the patient was coming out of anesthesia, Jon called out to the waiting room and paged for the patient’s mother without a response. The patient was recovered and then taken to the post-operative area and released to Kim, the discharge nurse, and gave report and advised that the mother wasn’t in the waiting area. Kim received a call from Tim, the security officer, who advised the patient’s father was at the main reception area. The father was brought back to the discharge area and the patient recognized the gentleman as her father and after another...

...A. Summary. Robert Booth, Owen Gibson and Pete Pattisson have posted an article in The Guardian on Thursday September 26th 2013 about the conditions for migrant workers in Qatar. Qatar has imported a high amount of foreign workers to complete stadiums, hotels and infrastructure before the 2022 World Cup, which is being held in Qatar. A high number of these workers come from Nepal and India. The working conditions are criticized by both an investigation led by The Guardian and the Nepali embassy. According to The Guardian, the workers are working under so horrendous conditions that they lead to sickness and high number of deaths. Qatari unions have warned that, there could be more than 4000 deaths before 2022. The general secretary of The International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) Sharan Burrow, states that the Qatari government are not reacting on this issue, and therefore it is unsolved. Even though only few of the deaths have conducted autopsies, he claims that there is no doubt that the workers are dying because of the conditions they work under. He claims that there should be implemented the highest standards for the 2022 World Cup – also in concern of the workers. The Nepalese ambassador agrees with this, but has returned to Nepal. B. Discussion In all times it has been a discussion on whether some countries were to be allowed to host countries for the biggest sport events. The Olympic games, European Championship and World Cup are all sport events that...

...A2 Pilot coursework I have chosen to base my investigation on dating adverts that have been placed in the Guardian by Guardian readers. It is assumed that they all have similar interests due to them all being a reader of the same newspaper and obviously are single and looking for a partner. I have decided to investigate the ways men and woman describe themselves physically and personally and whether or not men and woman stick to their language stereotypes. I believe that I will find a trend were woman will describe themselves physically a lot more than their personal interests and men will describe their interests. I also believe that woman will seem tentative with how they describe themselves and men will typically get straight to the point. I have found that some of the woman who posted an advert in the soulmates dating page hasn’t always stuck to the language that is typical of them to do so. Various women tend to be picky and decelerate when describing what they want in a man, ‘tall, unpretentious bloke’. This is seen as an uncommon feature of woman’s language due to the fact that they are usually tentative and edge around the point. However, due to the fact they seem to have a word count of some sort the woman will have had to be short and sweet when writing. This meaning they will be bending the ways they speak or write. I also found that ‘attract’, ‘curvaceous’ and several other adjectives were used frequently. Most women were beginning their advert with usually three...

...”BIG BROTHER ISN’T WATCHING YOU” Void versus community spirit. These two feelings are feelings humans all across the world must deal with every day. They feel like missing out on something because the society doesn’t give them the space needed to become a success. In the summer of 2011 rioters in England drew the government’s attention to the fact that they felt neglected and overlooked in the society. In the commentary “Big Brother isn’t watching you” posted on The Guardian website, the English comedian, actor, musician and writer, Russell Brand explains the rioter’s motive for the 2011 UK riots. Russell Brand currently lives in Los Angeles but he still has a strong connection to his native country and therefore the riots in the UK have also become his problem. In the commentary he describes the situation seen from his point of view. Russell Brand uses an overload of sarcasm and irony to describe his position on the riots. He is very sarcastic about the way the 2011 UK riots have been handled and uses sarcasm to point out his dissatisfaction with the UK government. His attitude to the 2011 UK riots is that it is a common problem, which must be solved jointly. Russell Brand is very astonished at the way the rioters are being described as “mindless”. “However “unacceptable” and “unjustifiable” it might be, it has happened so we better accept it and, whilst we can’t justify it…and work out why so many people feel utterly disconnected from the cities they live in”...

...needs to combine the creative side of the discipline – using powerful narratives to tap into people’s wishes and aspirations – with the technical side of data, digital engineering and analytics. The two areas do not always sit easily together. Getting creative marketers to work alongside technical staff can be a huge challenge. To explore these issues, the Guardian, in association with software firm Adobe, invited a panel of five top marketers and digital chiefs to discuss the matter before an audience of about 50 marketing and digital professionals. The question they addressed was: “What does the merging of technology and marketing mean for marketers?” The panel examined the challenges of bringing together these two distinct worlds. Marketing is concerned with understanding people’s motivations and using these insights to create campaigns that promote brands and encourage people to buy their products. It is a creative and often intuitive process. The technology used to achieve this, however, requires skills in mathematics, statistics and computing. How can these two different areas work together effectively? As Guardian News and Media’s chief digital officer Tanya Cordrey told the panel: “Where marketing hasn’t changed is the creativity and the passion from brands that have really helped build loyalty and emotion.” But she added: “Those things you still need, but almost all aspects of marketing have changed...

...director of the company today. This report aims to look at customer demand in Wetherspoons pubs, and how Wetherspoons can plan for and control this demand. What customer demand do Wetherspoons pubs face? (Part 1a) There is no doubt that J.D.Wetherspoons has a high volume of customer demand, with revenue of £1,972.1 million last year between 860 pubs (JD Weatherspoons annual report 2012). There are real ale festivals and 428 Wetherspoons pubs achieved 100% from cask masque for the quality of their ales (http://www.jdwrealale.co.uk/guide/cask-marque, 25/11/2012). But pubs are no longer about simply selling beer. Many Wetherspoons now open from 7am (Julia finch, The Guardian, 2010) for breakfast; though they do not serve alcohol until 9am. Coffee sales in 2009 were 25 million, according to Tim Martin in the Guardian newspaper (Julia Finch, 2010). A look at the food menu makes it clear how varied it is, with over 70 meals on the main menu plus curry night, steak night and Sunday lunch menus,...

...of this assignment I will just write about the Guardian ad Litem program itself. I could easily give an analysis of this organization based off the six policy elements. This organization is awesome and I would recommend checking it out. The missions, goals, and objectives are great for this organization. The mission statement is: “Advocating for the child’s best interest is the Program’s only purpose. These Program Standards are to be interpreted to support the mission”. (Guardian ad Litem, 2004) This organizations goals & objectives are simple for powerful. This organization is purely to help children in the courts system. They believe that a child should be loved and have safe environment no matter what. The forms of benefits and services delivered are coordinated with the courts. On this org’s website they provide a standard of operations and it explains everything, having to do with benefits and services. Entitlement rules are easy for this org; it is solely for the children in the court system that has no voice. This org speaks for them in the courts when no one else will. This organization has a set of standards they go by for these two policies. Guardian ad Litem depends on many for their funding. According to Guardian ad Litem (2004), “Federal, state and local government agencies, non-profit and faith-based organizations, private foundations and corporations are working together to support the efforts of the Guardian ad Litem program” (para. 1). Also this program...

...Kyle Randall ENGL 1302 03 March 23, 2014 Othello Essay Iago from Othello the Play The play Othello by William Shakespeare is a play all about deception, betrayal, and lying. It starts out with two men talk one is Iago, and he seems to be jealous of one of his fellow Italian country men, Othello. Othello just got a military promotion that Iago felt he deserved or at least wanted. Recently Othello just secretly married a senator’s daughter, so the man and Iago are plotting on how to get him in trouble for this. It starts to make the reader wonder is Iago evil. It turns out throughout the rest of the story he makes everybody turn on their own friends and loved ones, to the point they kill each other, even convincing Othello to kill his new wife. So it makes me come to the conclusion Iago is most definitely evil, not only that he is knifing, and very persuasive. This is how evil he is, Othello gave his new wife this handkerchief, and it is supposed to be their handkerchief of love. Iago uses this sacred madrigal token, to turn Othello against his wife. By planting it in one of Othello’s friend’s quarters. Once Iago persuades Othello to go in the other mans quarters he sees it and becomes very angry, and jealous thinking the two have slept together. Iago convinces Othello he must kill his own wife for cheating on him. So eventually Othello does the deed and kills his own wife. This scene shows exactly how evil Iago is, he has enough evil in his heart to turn a lover against...

...Identify the methods used in the regulation and self-regulation of the media in the UK Regulation is a compulsory part of modern media. It sets clear instructions on the content and conduct of things that are being shown to the general public. Self-regulation is when the media are independent from the state in that they regulate their own material, and decide what viewers should see and not see. How is the media regulated? Here in the UK, the government has absolutely no power over what the media publish. From 1990 to 2014, media was regulated by the Press Complaints Commission, which was replaced by the Independent Press Standards Organisation. These bodies are entirely independent from the government. This is one of the messages on the homepage of the IPSO: "IPSO is committed to working with the newspaper and magazine industry to maintain and enhance the freedom and authority of the press through effective, independent regulation." When an independent organisation regulates the media, bias is not so much of an issue as it would be otherwise. Standards are set by the regulating body, and media outlets have the obligation as part of the media, to cooperate and follow them. When a company breaches the standards that have been set, the IPSO will conduct it's own independent investigation into whether the allegation is true. The IPSO works on democracy; the majority of newspapers and other media outlets support it, so therefore there is no resistance to it's successful...
