It is therefore important that we mobilize our efforts together to avert further deaths of our pregnant mothers. The Philippine Obstetrical and Gynecological Society (Foundation), Inc. ...A ban that disallowed teachers and students to be "friends" on Facebook and most other online networking sites will remain in place under an updated social media policy the School Committee is slated to take up Tuesday. Meanwhile, an accompanying new acceptable-use policy will expand guidelines for ways that students, staff and other school employees may use the Internet in city school. The revamped policies are going to be designed to be more current with today's technology and social media/Internet practices. "Some teachers have had a great deal of success engaging students through electronic means and we want to accommodate that success where possible", said School Committee member LaDonna Crow. Many other area school districts are in the process of updating policies covering online networking, including Belchertown, Hampshire Regional, Northampton and Pioneer Valley Performing Arts Charter Public School. In the Hadley schools, a policy adopted in April prohibited teachers and students from being "friends" on social networking sites other than those approved by the district. Easthampton's social media policy takes a similar approach, stating that school staff may not list current students as "friends" on networking sites unless the sites are hosted or approved by the school district. The previous ban referred only to teachers. The proposed policy stated that all "e-contacts with students" should be made through the district's computer and telephone system, except...

...Analysis of Sydney Tar Ponds and Coke Ovens Sites Remediation Project Environmental Assessment of 2005 Table of Contents 1.0 Introduction1 2.0 Sydney Tar Ponds Environmental Assessment2 2.1 Critical Discussion4 3.0 Conclusions5 References7 Assignment Checklist9 AppendixI 1.0 Introduction The Sydney Tar Ponds in Nova Scotia are the result of lack of foresight by the Canadian government and the Dominion Iron & Steel Company Ltd. on the effects of the steel mills operations on the social, economic and environmental factors which affected the communities around the tar ponds. The Coke Ovens is a 68 hectare former industrial property bounded by residential and former industrial lands. It contains several watercourses including Coke Ovens Brook. From 1901 to 1988, various coke production plants operating on the site provided carbon and fuel for the nearby steel mill. Other industrial plants on the property used by-products from the coking operations to manufacture various commercial products. An estimated 560,000 tons (280,000 m3) of soil on the Coke Ovens is contaminated with petroleum hydrocarbons, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and metals. An additional 1,300 tons (1,000 m3) of PAH contaminated sediment is present in Coke Ovens Brook and 25,000 (12,500 m3) tons of contaminated soil is present in the in-ground tar cell (Griffiths et al. 2006). The main problem with the Sydney Tar Ponds was how the toxic waste material from the coke ovens (tailings)...

...Gumpertz & Heger Inc. 30 September 2010 1. INTRODUCTION Underlayment products for use beneath metal panel roof systems should be carefully selected to provide a roofing system that performs satisfactorily for its intended service life. Several considerations must be addressed in the roofing system design, including ensuring that the four barriers needed in any building enclosure (Le., water barrier, thermal insulation barrier, vapor retarder, and air barrier) are provided and are in the correct location for a given climate. Long term, in-service roof performance can be affected by several important factors including: the metal roofing system and its expected service life, the climate at the building location, roof slope and geometry, and ambient conditions (temperature/relative humidity) within the building. Improper selection of the roof underlayment may allow roof leakage or entrap moisture due to vapor diffusion or air exfiltration, which may accelerate deterioration of concealed components, shortening their service life and necessitating repairs. Further, to provide longevity the underlayment should match the intended service life of the metal roofing system. Although there is no universal design that applies to all buildings, this paper attempts to clarify many of the issues involved in selecting appropriate metal roof underlayment materials, and provides guidelines to builders who are responsible for constructing metal roofing systems. In general, contractors should be...

...In the March 2002 issue of the Harvard Business Review, Roger Martin proposed his virtue matrix as a framework for analyzing corporate social responsibility. The purpose of this paper is to discuss three recent newspaper articles that showcase acts of corporate social responsibility and to provide an evaluation of the virtue matrix in regard to its usefulness for understanding corporate social responsibility in addition to how the matrix relates to government regulation. The first article for discussion is entitled “McDonald’s to phase out pork from suppliers that cage pigs over 10 years” (York, 2012). The article reports on McDonalds’ plan to gradually eliminate the use of pig gestational crates in its U.S. supply chain over the next ten years. Gestational crates are used to confine female pigs for most of their adult life as it is reasoned by some that pregnant sows become aggressive around food. The process has been condemned by animal rights activists as unnecessary and cruel (York, 2012). The article goes on to say that McDonald’s is not the only fast food restaurant that is engaging in this act, Burger King and Wendy’s also have plans to phase out the use of these crates. McDonald’s has pledged to work with farmers to move toward other methods of confinement that will serve both of their needs. Given the widespread movement to ban gestational crates by other fast food chains this act by McDonald’s falls into the bottom left quadrant of the matrix, the choice section...

...Our discussion was based on the statement “The United States should not re-licensed Nuclear Power Plants as their licenses expire and move away from Nuclear Power as soon as possible”. Our class was divided into two sides based on our positions on the continuum. In our discussion, one of the arguments expressed from the agreeing side of the main statement was that Nuclear Power Plants are prime targets for terrorism. A few of those classmates mentioned how terrorists can take advantage of the powerful radioactive waste and create weaponry, or even attack the plant itself, to cause harm and conflict amongst the innocent residents in that area. This point is also mentioned in a short TEDTalks video. Another argument expressed from the agreeing...
