In Tori Morrison’s Song of Solomon, the character Guitar’s name solidifies his role as Milkman’s mentor and an instrument that will help Milkman achieve his goals. Guitar received his name by desperately wanting a guitar from a contest only to throw a fit when he did not win the guitar. From that point on people referred to him as Guitar. Throughout the novel, Guitar bestows wisdom onto Milkman especially with his goals to fly, an example being in chapter eight which the white peacock covered in jewellry ran around the street. Upon asking why the bird doesn’t fly away, Guitar simply tells Milkman ‘All that jewelry weighs it down. Like vanity. Can’t nobody fly with all that s**t. Wanna fly, you got to give up the s**t that weighs you down.’
