...Responsible Gun Owners are losing their Rights Ryan T. Kennedy COM/172 November 20, 2013 Oleah Morris Responsible Gun Owners are losing their Rights The gun violence of today in many opinions, is worse than what it was in the “Wild West.” A major contributor, is the actions and crimes of criminals with illegally obtained firearms. Crimes committed with illegally obtained firearms such as robberies, gang shootings, and even murder. The firearm subject has been at the top of several political debates in recent times. This is mostly because of several school tragedies involving innocent children, which have taken place over the last two and a half decades. Some individuals believe that more crime will be prevented, if more law-abiding citizens were armed. Others believe that stronger gun laws are needed. The thesis is, Americans are losing their Second Amendment rights because of criminals with illegally obtained firearms. Has the nation forgotten about the United States Constitution and the Bill of Rights, or does this country only care about the first and fifth amendments? The general census is anti-gun activists and the U.S. Government need to put the blame where it belongs, and stop punishing law-abiding citizens. The History of Firearms and the Crimes Committed Many believe it was Leonardo DiVinci who invented the firearm. The fact is, “the first firearm in the world was invented in 13th century China when the man made portable fire lance (a bamboo or metal tube that...

...Gun Control Concealed Weapons Laws in Arizona Vernon Daniels Jr. Com 220 Jewel Jackson “Gun Control” Concealed Weapons Laws in Arizona Arizona has some of the least restrictive gun laws in the nation. It also has one of the highest rates of gun deaths in the country. But, how closely are guns and violence connected? The answer, like much involving guns in America, is complicated. Even though there is a right to bear arms, gun control laws in Arizona are in need of some work. There have been various shootings that have attributed to this need, adding the fact that carrying a concealed weapon is open to just about anyone only intensifies this need. “Arizona Fired Up Over Year-Old Weapons Law” is an article from 1995 in the Christian Science Monitor that discusses the stance that Tiffany Williams took regarding concealed weapons. Tiffany Williams is one of some 31,000 Arizonans who had decided that their safety hinged on toting guns, and thus had completed a 16-hour firearm-safety course required at that time to carry a concealed gun. Non-supporters of concealed weapons laws worried that as guns continue to show up in more hands, the greater the chance of violent incidents while supporters of concealed weapons laws argued that allowing people to carry firearms - openly or not - is a basic right, and gives people a greater sense of security. Tiffany...

...Team Debate Paper Team c BCOM/275 June 10, 2013 Rebecca B. Team Debate Paper The second amendment provides that “a well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.” In short this is a right for civilians to bear arms. This amendment within a group of amendments was written in 1787. When it was drafted as an amendment it was done with the best intentions but lately in today’s society there is a growing argument that begs the questions to revisit this amendment. Everything from a caliber of a weapon to gun laws to background checks has changed drastically, but so have the laws. Some say the laws are fine the way they are, while others say the laws need to be changed. The Pros of Stricter Laws Against Re-selling of Guns and Trafficking Since the resent tragedies involving guns violence continues to increase in the United States, stricter laws against the reselling and trafficking of guns has been a major controversy. One topic up for discussion is whether the trafficking of guns through gun shows and gun dealers can assist in the decrease of gun violence. Bearing arms is the right of the people and to take away guns conflict with these laws. Instead of focusing on banning guns completely, the government should focus on stricter laws regarding the loop holes within the gun shows and the process of purchasing guns from gun dealers. According to “Coalition To Stop Gun Violence”...

...The gun control debate is one of the hottest topics of current media - and it will be discussed further in this paper. This research paper will be oriented against gun control, therefore being for gun ownership. Many aspects of gun control will be discussed, and the argument of this this research paper will be for gun rights and ownership. A lesser-known but important topic in the larger scale gun control debate is handicapped individuals owning a firearm and permit for self defense. Handicapped citizens are more opposed to gun control laws than most, due to the fact that some grips and stocks that are illegal are more necessary (Ennis, 2013). Assault-style weapons, such as AR-15’s, are very customizable, and such customizations could compensate for an individual’s disabilities. Banning that genre of firearms would remove the broad personalization options, and therefore making it more difficult for handicapped shooters to modify a gun to their needs. Also, some disabled shooters may have certain conditions that prevent them from assuming a normal shooting stance. If accommodations can made for the shooter to use their gun effectively, such as a lighter weight gun or laser...

...Method Paper The pillow method is a five-step process used to resolve a disagreement or enable two people to gain understanding from a disagreement. The process involves each individual to look at the problem through five different perspectives. These steps or perspectives include: “I’m right you’re wrong”, “You’re right I’m wrong”, “both right both wrong”, “this issue isn’t important”, and “the truth is in all perspectives” (Alder & Proctor, p. 104). The purpose of the pillow method is for each person to gain insight from each step in the process. By looking at the problem from multiple perspectives each person gets the chance to enhance their cognitive complexity (Alder & Proctor, p. 104). In this paper I will apply the pillow method to a disagreement a coworker and I had over the new gun control laws that are being proposed by our government. While my co-worker believes that the government is trying to take away our rights by proposing new gun laws, I however believe that there should be changes made to the current laws put in place. I believe applying the pillow method to any argument will result in either a resolution or a better understanding between the two parties involved. “I’m right you’re wrong”: This step involves me stating the reasons why I believe that I am right and explaining my point of view on the subject (Alder & Proctor, p. 104). There are several reasons that I believe that there should be new gun laws put...

...Gun Control: The Battle Rages On Tyler D. Scott Ozarks Technical Community College Abstract This paper discusses and is centered around the on-going debate over gun control, I directly address how each major political party views this subject and what I believe the United States Government should do to be able to best combat this tremendous issue. I use research from multiple sources that contrast each side of the argument and give an overall insight into the world of modernized gun control. Gun Control: The Battle Rages On With the Second Amendment giving American citizens the rights to bear arms, and approximately fifty percent of Americans owning some form of a firearm, issues involving the ownership and possession of guns have led to heated debates in American society. Most notably is the issue of gun control. Many feel that the some form of gun regulation is necessary in order to lower the level of gun related violence in the country. On the other hand, the opponents of gun control feel that it would be an infringement on their second amendment rights. The outcome and extent of gun control has strong political implications because it basically determines the present day meaning of the Second Amendment. While each side has strong points to their arguments, one quote by writer Michael Warfel basically sums up the need for gun control. He writes, “An individual’s right to own and bear arms must be balanced by the greater social needs of a society” (Warfel, 2000, p...

...Amendment is the Right to bear arms. When you see the right to bear arms, many things come to mind. I picked this Amendment because I am a huge fan of hunting, I’m all about protecting my family in our home, and the most important one of all is our military. During hunting season, it is a time for me to spend time with my family. I have been out hunting since I was about eight years old. I found it to be a great sport and a great way to get food for your family. The second reason this Amendment is important is Americans should have the right to carry and hold guns in their homes....

...Cover Letter 1) The purpose of this paper is to remind the reader of the real reason why we have the right to bear arms. Many people are too easily swayed by the government propaganda in the media. It is important to never give up one’s basic rights and freedoms. 2) I learned that I was correct in my assumption that not only is there no correlation between gun control and decreases in violent crime, but in fact it is the opposite. Many areas where guns are illegal have a higher rate of violent crime. My perspective on this subject was reaffirmed in every way while researching and writing this paper. 3) The most difficult thing I encountered while writing the paper was determining how to cite the various sources I was using. Many sources come from online news agencies. Also I was unsure how to cite some documents such as the Constitution and Bill of Rights. 4) I actually did not really enjoy this assignment because the topic I chose fills me with such emotion. I should have perhaps chosen a subject to which I had no emotional attachment. It infuriates me that some people are willing to just give up our rights, thinking that will make things better. 5) I almost did not write about this topic when I saw how many students were already writing about it. But after reading some of the posts on the forum and recognizing what appears to be ignorance by many people about why this is such an important subject, I felt compelled to voice my opinion. This subject is very dear to me, as...

...they are covering is either suicides or homicides taken place by someone with a gun? Seeing that news on the television or on your phone just ruins your day or makes you feel uneasy about people who own guns. There are people who are trying to find a way to stop the suicides and homicides occurring. One answer that politicians talk a great deal about is gun control, and another would be for stricter gun laws for gun owners. But the question cover with this paper is; will gun control cut down the number of suicides and homicides or will it not? In “Gun Control Is a Misfire” Marc Cooper shows what the liberals and the NRA both get wrong. Cooper, a contributing editor to The Nation, retired from the journalism faculty at the USC Annenberg School, has reported on politics and culture for...

...Lewis 1 Joseph Lewis Melissa C. Niedermeyer Composition 1 February 12, 2013 GUN CONTROL: OR LACK THEREOF? IT JUST MAY BE TOO LATE. When I chose Gun Control or Lack Thereof, I was simply thinking of mass shootings like Aurora, Oak Creek, Newton, and let’s not forget Tucson. When we talk gun control it covers everyone and everything that has to do with, it also covers if anything can be done about it. Personally, I don’t think there is an answer. In the wake of these terrible events however, high ranking political figures, including the President of the U.S has determined that the gun laws in place need of amending. There are many high ranking officials sitting on both sides of this hot topic because Mr. Obama is proposing an amendment to our constitution along with laws that by the time this paper is written may be passed. Do you own a gun? I do. If a killer ran into the school, would security be able to help? Do they even carry weapons? I have owned three weapons, two automatic pistols and one rifle…. All of these guns were obtained illegally. This paper in essence pertains to not just to killers, but keeping illegal guns out of everyone’s hands. There are three main types of guns that are concentrated on when we about talk gun control. There are handguns, rifles, and shotguns. The two categories of guns that we will talk about in this paper are military style assault rifles and automatic handguns. Why? These are the weapons that criminals want...

...Refining Solutions Paper PHL/458 May 6, 2013 Dr. David Jung Refining Solutions Paper The original issue of my paper stems from all the turmoil the world has witnessed over the past few years. Public shootings and bombings have intensified the support of more stringent gun laws. The support of gun control is the problem I have chosen to rectify. Stringent gun laws and the public backing of gun control are a rising social problem in America. This is a problematic issue because the fundamental perception of the world each individual has affects the way he or she takes in empirical information. This is a sensitive issue with dire implications and the controversy is and always has been immense. My first solution to this problem was to have some sort of declaration to never be able to change the Second Amendment. A Gallup poll survey confirms that 73% of Americans believe the Second Amendment “guarantees” the right to keep guns and only a mere 20% believe it exists to enable state militias. If the First Amendment fails, the Second Amendment becomes a necessity. The Founding Fathers were clear when they declared, “a well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.” If the Second Amendment is ever repealed it would be considered unconstitutional, taken away by a tyrannical government without the will of the people, there would be a revolution. The second solution...

If severe gun control was actually enforced, as a society we would see crime rates increase, and our idea that school shootings would stop would be found out to be false. Many people argue over gun control, but do they truly know what it is? Gun control refers to laws or policies that are put in place to regulate the overall market with guns, including the ownership of them. This is something that has been of debate...

...Guns on College Campus Should guns be allowed on college campus? Kenton L. McGowen Abstract This paper will determine whether guns have a place on college, and school campuses. The conclusion that the paper reaches is that students who have guns will be tempted to use them, especially at universities and colleges that are full of drug use, stress, and anxiety. The mixture of guns into a formula like that is simply not conducive to a safe environment. This paper will take evidence from experts, as well as state rulings to show the two sides of gun control in regards to school campuses in order to answer the question: Should guns be allowed on college campuses? The constitution of the United States guarantees our right to bear arms in order to defend ourselves, but where does the line fall where it is ok and not okay to carry weapons? The debate has shifted from restaurants, to stores, and now to schools. It is recently that the question has come up, should college campus students be allowed to have guns? The question is a safety issue and mostly centers around a need for the preservation of life on these campuses, and whether or not the guns are absolutely necessary to have. It has been spurred on by the recent slew of school shootings that have hit areas of the country, most notably Virginia Tech in 2006. There are valid argumentative points to both sides, however. As previously mentioned, the constitution of the United States guarantees...

...In America guns have been a part of the country’s society since it’s birth. Throughout history the citizens of the US have used firearms to protect the nation, protect their families, to hunt for food and to engage in sporting activities. The issue of Guns and gun control takes on a proportion of extreme magnitude. Weighing the rights and liberties of the individual against the welfare and safety of the public has always been a precarious balancing act. In the United States, gun control is one of these tumultuous issues that has both sides firmly entrenched in their positions. Those parties in favor of gun ownership and the freedom to use and keep arms, rely on the fact that the provision for such rights is enshrined in their constitution. In this climate of growing violence, rife with turmoil and crime, gun advocates feel more than ever that their position is justified. As citizens of the “Land of the Free” possessing a gun is a fundamental right, and may even be a necessity... Anti- gun lobbyists point to the same growing violence and gun related crimes in an effort... The Effects and Consequences of Gun Control “A well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.” The right for of all Americans to bear arms is a right even the Founding Fathers held to equal importance as the Constitution itself. Whether or not gun control laws work, the fact of the matter is that these kind of...

...Gun Control For as long as I can remember, “The Right to Bear Arms” has always been one of the key essential rights to all American citizens. It went hand in hand with “Freedom of Speech”. Ask just about any high school freshman to name three specific rights provided to us by our United States forefathers in our U.S. Constitution and “The Right to bear Arms” will surely reach most lists. It was just one of those things that stood out as a young student of U.S. government. As I’ve gotten older, the more and more I came to realize that something that seemed so much like a given when it comes to basic rights of the American citizen, has become more and more of a not so given. This is largely in part due to the recent increase over the years of casualties involving minors and firearms which have put the issue of Gun Control on a political stage of its own. The Second Amendment of the United States Constitution states, “A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.” as written by Thomas Jefferson. It was adopted along with the rest of the Bill of Rights on December 15, 1791 and has been a staple to American citizen rights ever since. Several high profile court cases have been presented in front of the Supreme Court challenging the Second Amendment with no avail. One of the most notable and recent cases was Heller vs. District of Columbia (2008). Six plaintiffs were...
