Sitting in the physical therapist’s office, Gwen watched her best friend Rebecca doing her routine exercises with Dr. Highcastle. Glancing around the room for what felt like the millionth time, she couldn’t help but still feel guilty about why they were there. Gwen and Rebecca had been on their way to meet up with another friend, and they were really running late. Rebecca hadn’t slept well the night before, so she had overslept that morning, and then fell asleep again in the car. Gwen doesn’t remember much, because she suffered a concussion from the accident, but she does remember the sound of squealing tires and crushing metal, and the pain in her arm, but mostly, she remembers the look of pain on her friend’s face. A car had hit the passenger side of the Gwen’s car, where Rebecca was sleeping, because Gwen had not been paying attention and drove through a red light. Gwen had left the hospital with a broken arm, but Rebecca had been paralyzed from the waist down, and confined to a wheelchair. Rebecca had to stay in the hospital for two weeks, and Gwen often tried to visit her. Rebecca had mostly turned her away, though, understandably angry at her friend. It took a long time for Rebecca to be able to forgive Gwen for what she did, but eventually they were able to rekindle their friendship, and Gwen had started going to Rebecca’s twice a week physical therapy appointments with her. It had been six months since the accident, and Rebecca had been improving somewhat steadily at her sessions, thanks to her hard work and her optimistic attitude.
