Have you ever been faced with adversity and believed that you could not overcome it? In Gwen Bristow’s Celia Garth, Luke Asnell never looked at any arduous situation pessimistically. During his service for the rebels during the revolutionary war, he was faced with life or death situations every day, but always looked at the bright side. In addition, Luke never let his feelings or what others said influence his actions; he did what he thought was preeminent. Throughout the famous novel, Luke stays optimistic even when he has no reason to and does not let feelings or words influence his actions keeping his mind focused on the war. Luke made numerous stops on the wagon track to rest. In these stops, his thoughts told him that the British were coming and he should go home. But, he did not let his mind hold him back, and he delivered his load of goods to its destination. Not only did his qualms of fear not impact his actions, but his feelings of love did not change how he behaved around other people. When Luke walked Celia back to work from Viviana’s house, he fell in love with Celia. But, he did not indicate it to anyone. Celia thought to herself, “Luke had never, by any word or gesture, indicated that he might be in love with her” (Bristow 327). Luke did not indicate to Celia that he was in love with her because he was busy fighting the war. He did not need or want another distraction back home that prohibited his job on the battlefield. Even when Luke had thoughts of doubt that the rebels would lose, he stayed focused on the war and not Celia.
