Good morning teachers and classmates, the dramatic reading I will be doing today is of Gwen Harwood’s Poem, “Mother Who Gave Me Life” <Read “Mother Who Gave Me Life” (MWGML)> Throughout this poem I think Gwen Harwood explores a universal theme of loss as a distinctive feature throughout her poems, in particular loss of loved ones, which can be valued by contemporary audiences today due to it being an issue that is faced by everybody in their life at some point. When a loved one is no longer part of an individual’s life, one may experience grief and as a result realise the role and importance of that loved one. From my perspective, Harwood presents the concept of loss of loved ones through MWGML with the euphemism “You left the world so”, which highlights that her mother was not only a loss to her life but also a loss to the world, suggesting that she had great value and respect for her mother. There is a similar significance placed on her mother’s life that is stressed with the use of alliteration in “lived nearly thirty thousand days”. This presents the idea that she lived daily as a mother contributing to the lives of her children. Harwood also introduces a cloth motif in her poem, through the line “when she died she was folding a little towel” to highlight the importance of her day to day life. ...Bob Fosse was born in Chicago, Illinois, United States on September 23, 1987. Fosse began his unusual career as a dancer in the late 1940s, touring with companies of Call Me Mister and Make Mine Manhattan. After playing the lead in a summer-stock production of Pal Joey, then choreographing a showcase called Talent 52, Fosse was given a screen test by M-G-M and went on to appear in the film Kiss Me Kate. This appearance, in a highly original dance number, led to Fosse's first job as a choreographer, the Jerome Robbins-directed Broadway hit The Pajama Game. Soon after, he met the talented dancer Gwen Verdon, and the two proceeded to collaborate on several hit shows, including Damn Yankees, New Girl in Town , and Redhead. He was also frequently sought out as the "doctor" on shows in trouble, especially How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying and Little Me. Fosse's best collaboration with Verdon, Sweet Charity, demonstrated their perfect compatibility as a creative team and also flaunted his trademark style as a choreographer. Although this is true, Stefani has a history of borrowing from other cultures to make up her own style. In the 90’s when her band No Doubt was beginning to be popular on a national level she would sport Bindi’s in music videos and at red carpet events. She was inspired by her bandmate Tony Kanal’s mother who is Indian and would wear them. It’s likely that in the 90’s if you said, “Bindi” one would think of Gwen Stefani before they would think of the Bindi’s symbolism and history. Now when someone says, “Harajuku” you think of Stefani before you think of the Japanese street fashion. Stefani may be appreciative of Harajuku culture (Harajuku Lovers) but she is ignoring how her representation and repackaging of Harajuku style will skew people’s understanding of it.
