This year Héctor Tobar, author of Deep Down Dark, was the guest speaker at the convocation. Not knowing what to expect I entered the room with high expectations. The room was filled with enthusiastic faculty, staff, and of course many undergraduates. As the convocation began and Tobar took center stage I was quickly drawn to what drove him to write the story of thirty three men trapped in a Chilean mine. Quickly after the motivation behind the story was exposed, the speech became repetitive to an extant. Tobar seemed to not well prepare, the flow and transitions could have been more seamless, and certain areas seemed repetitive.
