My Translation
Last night; angels did knock the wine house door,
With man’s clay; the goblet, they did mold.

The dwellers of heaven divine,
With me_ a drunk, they drank wine.

The heaven could not bear this load of trust,
To such an insane man like me, was assigned this trust.

Leave aside the clashes of religions.
Having not see the truth, followed superstitions.

Thanks God! There is peace between him and me,
Dancing Horus drank wine with glee.

The fire is not the one that its flame makes candle smile,
It is the one which sets butterfly on fire.

No one but Hafez can reveal thoughts,
Pen of men could not write such talks.

No one can display thoughts as Hafiz can,
No such words are written by the pen of man.

There are various methods in translation of poetry, according to Andre Lafevere; there are seven methods in translation of poetry: phonemic translation, literal translation, metrical translation, verse-to-prose translation, rhymed translation, free verse translation, and interpretation. In this paper, I am going to compare three different translations of a poem by Hafez; Gertrude Bell (1897), Abbas Arianpur Kashani and my own translation. Gertrude Bell’s translation is a combination of rhymed, phonemic and literal translation. Some lines and words were translated word by word and some others were interpreted. I think it is due to the native language and social culture of the translator, his mother tongue is not Farsi, therefore he could not understand the concept of the poem perfectly. But the translator tried to considered rhymed translation all over the poem. Generally, his translation some how could convey the meaning of the original poem. Second translation, Abbas Arianpur’s translation also is a combination of rhymed and verse translation. He could convey the meaning of the poem while he followed rhymed translation rules at the same time. He tried not to distract the meaning of the poem as well. His work is clear, accurate and natural. Generally, his mother tongue is Farsi; so he could present a fair translation. The last one is my own translation, I tried to consider rhymed translation; also, I translated the meaning and concept of the poem as well. I hardly make an effort to convey the original meaning perfectly while I tried my work to be a clear and natural one. Consequently, I learned that there are different methods in translation of poetry and every translator picks one of them; even two or more in order to a present a perfect translation. I firmly believe that in translation of poetry, a native speaker can present a more accurate work than a non-native speaker. Additionally, I learned so many things from the poem itself. I understood that one will soon be lifted up to a very high position, spending his/her time with the top-level people of society. This honor bestowed on him/her will be exceptional if one believes in God and is truthful in his religion, he must respect all other religions, remembering that all of them worship the same God and try to purify the hearts of mankind in different ways. At the end, a study of Islamic Texts in English Translation (2) was a useful course for me, since I learned how to translate poems, verses, prose and so forth in ancient language. And I thank Dr. Eftekhari for teaching this course.

This civil war, a conflict between citizens of the same country, started in 2011. Syrian citizens took to the streets, demanding democracy and opening showing their disapproval of the government and president, Bashar al-Assad. The Assad family has held power in Syria for generations, many citizens blamed them for their lack of freedom, high unemployment rates, and economic woes. When President Bashar al-Assad succeeded his father in 2011, the citizens of Syria started a peaceful uprising to show their discontent and insisted on change. Their protests and demonstrations quickly turned violent. Assad’s government used deadly forceful action against the rebellion, which in return caused unrest among the civilians and they began to demand his resignation. However, the harder the rebels fought back, the more the government tried to crackdown on controlling them.
