...or more outer filters that work like sieves to stop the larger particles of dirt, dust, and hair. Inside those filters, there is a concertina of what looks like folded paper designed to trap the smaller particles. The paper is actually a mat of very dense glass fibers and, unlike the gauze, it doesn't simply filter out small dust particles like a sieve. Instead, it uses three different mechanisms to catch dust particles as they pass through in the moving airstream. At high air speeds, some particles are caught and trapped as they smash directly into the fibers, while others snag on the fibers as they try to brush by. At lower air speeds, dust particles tend to wander about more randomly through the filter (a process known as Brownian motion after its discoverer, Scottish botanist Robert Brown) and may stick to its fibers as they do so. Together, these three mechanisms allow HEPA filters to catch particles that are both larger and smaller than a certain target size. The fibers in the HEPA filters trap dust and dirt particles in three ways. Some particles crash into filter fibers and are absorbed by impact. Some are caught as they flow along in the moving airstream, move too close to a fiber and are trapped by interception. At lower air speeds, some are trapped by diffusion (when randomly moving dust and air particles crash into one another and some are pushed into the filter fibers). According to NIOSH (the US National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health), a HEPA...

...Hair is found throughout history, the material is useful in an almost endless variety of ways. Early on the abundant fiber was used for jewelry. Remains have been found in the UK with a decorative band of woven cow hair from the Early Bronze Age. Moving throughout history with the sophistication of jewelry hair was not left behind in the wake of these advancements. Instead hair jewelry rose to fashion again within the Victorian era with mourning jewelry. Within the mourning jewelry hair was included as a memento from the beloved deceased. Along with hair from deceased beaus living people gave locks of hair to be spun into fabulous pieces of jewelry for loved ones to wear . As a result the use of hair is not only in construction for plaster...

Diagnosis of hair loss: Because hair loss is often associated with an increased hair loss rate, male-pattern and female-pattern. Hair loss is always ignored to have detailed tests. Only if the hair loss is happening to someone suddenly or to people of an abnormal age, the diagnosis will be made, actually, we suggest all hair loss sufferers who are now losing hair excessively to have an overall diagnosis. See the...

...chose was “Asbestos: How great a Danger”? Asbestos is the generic name for several naturally occurring silicate mineral fibers. These fibers which are used as a heat insulator can easily be dislodged and may be inhaled in the lungs, where they remain for life (Bateman, 2011). They produce three disorders: pulmonary fibrosis, lung cancer and mesothelioma. Asbestos is referred to as a unique fiber. Asbestos is used as a heat insulation on ceiling and pipes in factories, schools and other buildings and sprayed on walls. It has also been used in things such as brake pads, brake linings, hair dryers etc. Everything we do puts humans and the environment at risk. The acceptability of risk is also influenced by perceived benefit. Asbestos underwent a complicated road from being an industrial commodity and must have, to being a huge risk, being one of the most dangerous fibers. There has been a call for a total ban on the use of asbestos due to the current health risk. Asbestos use is seen as not acceptable, controlled use is not possible and safer substitutes are available. In this case study, the benefits do not outweigh the cost. One may save money using asbestos, but the cost to seek healthcare for the individual affected is far more costly. In expressing preferences, I feel one would choose to be healthy without the detrimental health risk that this fiber brings along with its use. Overall asbestos is not an acceptable risk when there are other forms of this material that...

...into a fabric, e.g. felt). fabric (a cloth made of Textile also refers to the yarns, threads and wools that can be spun, woven, tufted, tied and otherwise used to manufacture cloth. The production of textiles is an ancient art, whose speed and scale of production has been altered almost beyond recognition by mass-production and the introduction of modern manufacturing techniques. An ancient Roman weaver would have no problem recognizing a plain weave, twill or satin. Many textiles have been in use for millennium, while others use artificial fibers and are recent inventions. The range of fibers has increased in the last 100 years. The first synthetics were made in the 1920s and 1930s. Sources and types Textiles can be made from a variety of materials. The following is a partial list of the materials that can be used to make textiles. Animal origin • Alpaca • Angora rabbit hair • Camel hair • Cashmere • Mohair • Silk • Vicuña hair • Wool: divided into woollen and worsted Vegetable • Bark cloth has various uses, and is used in sheets. • Coir: the fibre from coconuts. • Cotton • Grass, rush and straw • Hemp (mostly used in rope making) • Jute • Kapok • Linen, made from flax • Nettle: processed in a similar manner to flax. • Ramie • Seaweed: a water soluble fibre (alginate) is produced. This is used as a holding fibre in the production of certain textiles: when the cloth is finished the alginate is dissolved, leaving an open area. • Sisal Derived from plant...

...Concrete + Fly ash Properties of the material Shapes Fly ash consists mainly of hollow spherical shapes which creates a ball bearing effect in the mix, improving workability without increasing water requirements. Fly ash also improves the pump-ability of concrete by making it more cohesive and less prone to segregation. The spherical shape improves the pump-ability by decreasing the friction between the concrete and the pump line. In addition, some fly ashes have been shown to significantly decrease heat generation as the concrete hardens and strengthens. Fly ash, as do all pozzolanic materials, generally provide increased concrete strength gain for much longer periods than mixes with Portland cement only. Durability The biggest reason to use fly ash in concrete is the increased life cycle expectancy and increase in durability associated with its use. During the hydration process, fly ash chemically reacts with the calcium hydroxide forming calcium silicate hydrate and calcium aluminate, which reduces the risk of leaching calcium hydroxide and concrete’s permeability. Fly ash also improves the permeability of concrete by lowering the water-to-cement ratio, which reduces the volume of capillary pores remaining in the mass. The spherical shape of fly ash improves the consolidation of concrete, which also reduces permeability. Water Requirement The amount of water necessary to obtain normal consistency in fly ash concrete varies considerably in accordance with the carbon content...

...1. INTRODUCTION Aluminium and its alloys are used in fabrications because of their low weight, good corrosion resistance and weldability. This encourages the use of aluminium and its alloy in aerospace industry, internal combustion engine parts, ship building etc. [1]. Welding being most widely used joining method can be used for welding aluminium. Tungsten inert gas welding (TIG) and metal inert gas welding (MIG) are commonly used for aluminium. In this study TIG welding is used since TIG welding process offers great advantages such as cleanliness, deposition rate, heat input etc.) Tungsten inert gas welding (TIG) is a process that melts and joins metals by heating them with an arc established between a non consumable tungsten electrode and the metals. The torch holding the tungsten electrode is connected to a shielding gas cylinder as well as one terminal of the power source. The workpiece is connected to the other terminal of the power source through a different cable as shown in Figure 1. The shielding gas goes through the torch body and is directed by a nozzle toward the weld pool to protect it from the air. Generally argon and helium are used [2]. A mixture of inert shielding gas and some amount of oxygen or CO2 can be used, which affects the weld penetration [3, 4]. Experimentation becomes tedious and time consuming if full factorial design is used hence an Taguchi’s orthogonal array depending upon number of factors and their corresponding levels can be choose in selecting...

...disease involving the thinning or complete loss of hair. Alopecia’s affects differ based on gender. Males suffer from the loss of hair at the hairline or top of the head. Females, on the other hand, suffer from hair loss that is often only at the top of the head, with the hairline staying in tact. There are many causes contributing to the diagnosis of alopecia. This list includes aging, genetics, illness, or malnutrition. Alopecia is not to be confused by baldness caused by “the hairless gene”. “A congenital disorder called atrichia is caused by the ‘hairless’ gene." Alopecia, though it can be genetically passed down, is very different from general balding in that it is caused by actual damage to the hair shaft or follicle. Damage can be caused by a major illness, particularly a fungal infection, stress to the root, injury, or even medications such as chemotherapy. Our world today is constantly changing. New diseases are discovered, old diseases disappear, and cures or vaccines are developed for the millions we have affected by one thing or another. Today there are 53 million people affected by a disease know as Alopecia. I would like to explore the most common forms of Alopecia's that effect millions today. These include Universal Alopecia, Androgenetic Alopecia, Traction Alopecia, Anagen Effluvium, Telogen Effluvium, Alopecia Areata, Scarring Alopecia, and Alopecia Totalis. Universal Alopecia is total loss of hair on the body. This affects both men, women, and...

...and my sibling was a boy and 11 years older than me in fact; it was difficult growing up without a girl to look upon on.. My brother the oldest grandson, 20, was still a huge kid who loved to pick on us. His name is Raul but we call him Omar because of his middle name. He was wearing his favorite, black and silver Raiders jersey. Back in time when jean shorts for males were cool he would wear those with some Nike tennis shoes. Then came my cousin who was 2 years older than me, he was 11 at the time, I was still taller than him by an inch; he was stronger and picked on me a lot because I was a girl and taller than he was. His name is Abraham but called him Abe for short. Abe’s brother was only 2 months younger than I am and had long hair, smelled bad because he would never take a shower. He smelled like rotten cheese it was a strong disgusting order he would carry in his presences, we even gave him a nick name and it was Queso, cheese in Spanish which we still call him to this day; but his real name is Marcos. My cousin Ony was only one year younger than my brother, he was 19 years old he loved to wear basketball shorts and a white t-shirt which was...

...to buy her husband. You can sense the desperation that Della feels as she counts her money numerous times just to make sure she did not miscount it. The tone of the story up to this point has been somber. You actually feel bad for Della that she has saved her money all this time but still does not have much to buy her husband a gift. We see Della’s mood change from somber to desperate as she realizes that in order to earn money she is going to have to do something drastic. We learn early on in the story that Della, and her husband Jim, have two prize possessions. “One was Jim’s gold watch that had been his father’s and his grandfather’s. The other was Della’s hair.” (Clugston, 2010 p.22) We learn later on in the story how much these two items symbolize the love that they have for each other. Della’s hair is not only beautiful to everyone around her but it is valuable due to its beauty and length. At...

...Jess comes from a very strict Indian family where gender roles are clearly defined. Women are expected to learn to cook and care for their husbands, who are, of course, expected to be the sole breadwinners. But on the other hand, Jess sees herself as a female version of her hero, David Beckham, competing in soccer rather than cooking for an acceptable Indian man as tradition dictates. However, although her parents tolerated her sports passion when she was younger, they now believe she should become serious about her life and prepare for the future. That means giving up "children's games" for cooking lessons, marriage, and university studies. They forbid her from playing any more. An Indian girl should not play soccer, since the game consists of "displaying your bare legs to complete strangers." The preparations for her sister's wedding only underscore the liabilities of Jess's unladylike behavior. After watching this movie I realized that in parenting you have to be flexible, strict, and do some discipline. You teach, and talk to you child about rules, and if those rules are broken what the consequences will be. You explain to them what it was like when you grew up and how life is now, because times are changing and you must accommodate to those changes also. Always let your children know that they can always come to you know matter what and talk to you. By doing this you listen and you do not judge them by the things that they might say. Be there for your child no matter...
