...Assignment: Formal Analysis of Art Summary There are various formal qualities about the painting Las Meninas by Diego Velazquez that make it very interesting to view. For example, I have observed the above listed painting through conducting a formal analysis of it, and have concluded with the following observations and interpretations of my understandings. The artist has portrayed an image of girls in the midst as if waiting to attend the wedding. Second, the artist reflects within the painting background an image of an artist working on a painting, while a mirrored image on the very back wall depicts what appears to be the King and Queen. These formal qualities used by Diego Velazquez create many illusionistic effects, just as that of the mirror used to attract the viewer’s visibility; rather it also portrays reflections of images that reside outside the view. In addition, the artist here has used three primary focal-points including self-portrait, half-length, and reflected mirrored images. However, the dimensions and depth of the painting have been obscured this has been accomplished through the use of various layers, shapes, colors, and tones that tend to overlap for outstanding effects. The formal qualities of Nighthawks by Edward Hopper are also very interesting yet, much more simple and to the point than that of Las Menias. For example, after observing through formal analysis I have concluded with the following observations of my understandings. In this particular painting...

...Hello Everyone, I hope your Labor weekend was a pleasant one. My family background has a lot culture history, which means there is a lot to talk about, but I will concentrate in sharing more of the work history from my father side. In that note I will like to share minimum information regarding my family cultural background. My grand grand parents are from Korea, they immigrated to Europe and make Spain their new home. Grandparents and father are from Madrid Spain, grandparents and mother and from Ecuador. On the other hand, my father is the youngest of a family of 12 kids. He became an industrial engineer and end up working in underground mining. His job was very dangerous, long days of work and the responsibility was huge. But the paid was very high. The think he liked the most was the option to travel to other places in and outside the country. The job most of the time was tragic and sad for the families of the miners; people will end up dying for many reasons. This job has been one of the longest job he did. My father salary was good when he started, then with time things change as the economy change, with the years the impact was mostly for newer people in the industry. Because of his position he had all the benefits working for the company. For example: if he wanted to invest stocks in the company, medical and insurance benefits. He was treated good most of the years he got to work for the company, the only think he mention about disliking in the company was the...

...When I had first realized I wanted to study abroad, my first thought was where in Europe I would like to go. I always had a fascination with Italy and knew I would love the food there, or London because there would be no language barrier but my colleges had shied me away from those two choices. The reason was because everyone that I talked to said that Valencia had the best international program at FSU. After spending a very quick 5 weeks here, I don't even need to see the other programs to know that I made the best decision. This program has been above and beyond every expectation I had of it, and if I had to make the same decision again I would make it 10 out of 10 times. Everything from the housing to the staff has been perfect for the program and has really made it easy for the students especially myself never being in Europe before and speaking very little Spanish. So as I am getting extremely excited and anxious to make this trip of a lifetime I decide to fly out of JFK instead of Miami where I’m from to get over directly to Valencia rather then having to switch planes in a foreign airport for the first time. Unfortunately for me and about 15 of the students the plane was delayed for about 7 hours. I was scared for a while that we weren’t going to be able to go since it was around 12 at night by the time we eventually boarded the plane. After much delay and dismay we got in the air and it was off to Spain, and I have not looked back since. Once we got here I was...

...than 1,500 people were killed in a cruel act of war unmatched in European history. Picasso was asked to create an artwork by Republican Spain that would go in the Paris World Exposition. Up until two months before the exposition Picasso found himself uninspired. But as soon as knowledge of Guernica was exposed to the public Picasso swiftly made it clear to that Guernica would be his subject for the Paris Expo. He worked non stop for two months to produce the devastating display of the horrors of war in harsh black and white, measuring eleven feet high by twenty-five feet long so large that Picasso had to attach his paint brushes to long sticks to complete it. It is an oil painting on canvas, and is on display at the Museo Reina Sofía in Madrid. Picasso completed the work of art in June, 1937The scene is filled entirely with horror and mortality from clearly defined suffering characters to intelligently placed hidden images reinforcing the overall destruction. At the center is a horse, representing the Spanish citizens. A strong, noble animal, with a spear stabbed into it, recoiling in...

..."We only see what we look at and to look is act of choice." ("Ways of Seeing" 8) "The photographer's way of seeing is reflected in his choice of subject, they are showing you what they want you to see." ("Ways of Seeing" 10) Photographs are taken for a reason; there are many other angles or other scenes a photographer can choose from and it is up to the photographer to decide which one the viewer sees. In essence, the viewer only sees one aspect of the image captured with the lens of the camera. For example, "when only the head of a figure is visible in a picture which appeals to visual thinking-as distinguished, for example, from a news photograph which many make use of the sense of sight merely for the purpose of informing us of what went on in a certain place-that figure is always to be seen as being incomplete." (Arnheim 11) The eye cannot continue beyond the borders of the photograph and the wholeness of the picture is lost. In a painting, the artist has painted all of the elements to be seen simultaneously. "The spectator may need time to examine each element of the painting but whenever he reaches a conclusion the simultaneity of the whole painting is here to reverse or quality his conclusion." ("Ways of Seeing" 26) A painting maintains its own authority, the painting does not capture momentary appearances it creates its' own. In doing so the viewer becomes a part of the painting, when the viewer steps away from the painting he is no longer an influence or a part of...

...of color, and generally they have only three or four, they do not pay much attention to their clothes nor to jewels. They dress their hair simply, which is thin, but beautiful in their childhood. They go everywhere walking so nimbly or faster than men, carrying their books, their baskets, without minding anyone and only their own business. As I said to Pangoy, they are home-loving and they study cooking with as much diligence as they do music and drawing. If our sister María had been educated in Germany, she would have been notable, because German women are active and somewhat masculine. They are not afraid of men. They are more concerned with the substance than with appearances. Until now I have not heard women quarreling, which in Madrid is the daily bread. It is a pity that there in our country the principal adornment of all women almost always consists of clothes and finery rather than of knowledge. In our provinces, women still preserve a virtue that compensates for their little instruction - the virtue of industry and tenderness. In no woman in Europe have I found the latter virtue in such a high degree as among the women there. If these qualities that nature gives to the...

...That said, much of the resulting debate was not about the voluntary nature of the price, but about the amount. When it comes to museum prices, how high is too high, especially when, as is especially the case outside the US, museums receive generous public subsidy? All museums are different of course, in terms of their collections and their patrons, but here are a few things to consider in why it makes sense for museums to continue charging admission: First, as options go for being able to enjoy the fine arts, museums are not expensive. Compared to what we pay for opera, classical music, or theatre, that we can see the Met’s magnificent collection for just $25, or visit the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam for just €15 ($20), or the Prado in Madrid for €14 ($18), and spend the entire day there among the greatest treasures of the art, is an astonishing thing. These amounts might seem high compared to museums with free admission, or high relative to what was charged 20 years ago, but we shouldn’t lose sight of the fact that these prices are a relative bargain in the cultural...

...Appraising Internationality in Spanish Communication Journals ´ david ferna ndez-quijada This article explores how journals published in a language other than English achieve a degree of internationality and can increase our knowledge of scientific publication patterns. This author offers a case study focused on Spanish communication journals from a sample of 1182 articles published from 2007 to 2009. The article examines three variables in this sample: the number of non-Spanish scholars, the use of languages other than Spanish, and how often non-Spanish journals are referred to. The results show that (a) these journals find it difficult to attract foreign scholars, (b) open-language policies have had a limited effect, and (c) internationality is constrained to the Spanish geolinguistic region. Keywords: internationality, local journals, Spanish scholarly journals, journal evaluation, communication sciences introduction The impact of published research is measured by means of well-established tools; one such tool is the Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI). However, in the field of communication studies — and in fact in all the social sciences — the SSCI does not take account of all the research published; this is particularly visible in cases where research is published in languages other than English. For example, in 2009, only 81 out of the 1585 articles (5.11 per cent) indexed in the Communication category of the SSCI were not written in English. In the context of these...

...The Cosmopolitan Corporation Introduction The article at hand ”The Cosmopolitan Corporation Global - success requires that companies appreciate diversity and distance rather than seek to eliminate them” written by the Anselmo Rubiralta Professor of Global Strategy at the IESE Business School in Barcelona and author of “World 3.0” Pankaj Ghemawat, was published in the Harvard Business Review in 2011 on the pages 92-99 and deals with Ghemawats opinion that rooted cosmopolitans, in general, are more lifelike and practical than statelessness. Summary Pankaj Ghemawat states that majority of organisations are ingrained in their home countries. Even those those companies that are assumed as being highly acting global are this usually not. Therefore the author speaks of “the World 3.0”, a world which does not try to abolish differences and distances among other influences such as people, cultures, and places, but to comprehend them. Moreover he thinks that the key is to understand them. A method to analyse and understand this “cosmopolitan problem” is to utilize a rooted map, which uses measures as, for instance, inhabitants of one state and the GDP and is then compared with other parts of the world in order to identify the rate of growth or size. Equally important to mention are also three, to the author important, ways which lead, in combination of each, to adding value; namely the “AAA strategies”. This “AAA strategies” include the match of differences between countries and...
