...Is the glass half-empty or half-full? An age old question that discovers how one views the world. Many people see the glass half empty, but should they see it as half-full? Everyone faces some sort of conflict, and they approach it in many different ways. Some methods work better than others, but one way has the most beneficial results. Facing conflict with optimism inspires others, has health benefits, and makes it easier for the person to deal with the problem. Having an optimistic attitude inspires others. There are many resources that show having a hopeful attitude makes people around them feel more comfortable. Winston Churchill wrote a speech convincing the citizens of Great Britain that they needed to remain confident in him; and believe...

...HALF FULL OR HALF EMPTY As with many of his audit staff counterparts across the country, Bill Turner spent the last day of the year performing inventory observation procedures. His assignment that December 31 included taking test measurements at a client’s grain elevator in a small prairie community. Bill had measured grain inventories on two previous audits and was the in-charge accountant on this audit. Bill’s observations of the quantity of grain in the elevator fell ten percent below the client’s records. Bill’s attention was drawn to the discrepancy in the two measurements of what was in the elevator because, in his judgment, such a gap was significant enough to be material. The resulting difference between the inventory as reported by the client and the audited amount was enough to cause a significant drop in net income. Bill documented his findings in the working papers and proposed an adjusting entry for the difference. Upon delving further into the matter, Bill determined that a discrepancy in the grain inventory had also surfaced two months previously. The quantity of grain, as reported by a government inspector at that time was also lower than that on the client’s records. The difference in the inventory valuation, however, was not as great as that in Bill’s tests. Still, no adjustment to the client’s records was made. This information was also documented in the working papers. Prior to discussing the discrepancy with the client, Bill told Greg, the...

...Half Full or Half Empty Bill is facing an ethical dilemma due to his engagement partner’s inappropriate behaviour in preparing the working inventory documentation. The information is no longer accurate as Greg has overlooked using the updated figures from Bill and Bill’s measurements presented a discrepancy of 10% between what he observed and the client’s book value. Bill has also discovered that this is not the first time this discrepancy has been discovered. At a previous audit carried out by government officials, the same discrepancy was highlighted but again, not reflected in the client’s documentation. Bill faces several ethical issues here, specifically with his code of conduct from here onwards. If Bill fails to act, his integrity, objectivity and professional judgement could be called into question. Also, as an auditor, he is accountable to act in the interest of the user of the information (not specifically the client). As an auditor, he should comply with relevant professional ethical requirements relating to this audit engagement. As stated CAS/ISA 200.24-25 requires auditors to obtain enough evidence to justify opinions, the information has to be reliable and relevant (not just sufficient). He should obtain reasonable assurance that the financial statement taken as a whole is free from material misstatement, whether due to fraud or error. Bill also needs to demonstrate competence, objectivity and due professional care in this Operational Audit. Greg is accountable...

...up I was told a few times that I was the type of person that always saw the world in a slightly glass half empty type of way. I never really thought much of it until I encountered the character Holden Caulfield in the Catcher in the Rye. He similarly has the glass half empty outlook, and had the opportunity to do something good with his life. Instead he decides to throw it all away, and drink away his problems. Holden Caulfield has many problems. He is very antisocial, pessimistic, and cannot see any good in people. He is just a kid that decided to never grow up and instead to view society, and most people he meets, as “phony.” When I read this book I thought of all the similarities that I have with Holden, how I’m lucky enough to have the opportunity to do anything that I want with my life, and yet I’m too unmotivated to do much because life hasn’t been too hard on me. I never saw this as a problem until one of my close friends compared me to Holden, but on a much smaller scale. That’s when it hit me that on a day to day basis I have more similarities with him than I do differences. That’s when I realized that I don’t want to end up as a Holden Caulfield, and that I want to be the exact opposite of him. Over time I started trying to change. At first by just trying harder in everything, even if I didn’t think it was worth it, to trying to see everything in more of a glass half full sense. In general I noticed being pessimistic can make life miserable, and can lead to more problems...

...First off I would like to say that I had about a whole paragraph typed up explaining why I never had literature change my perspective before. I don’t like to read at all and I have only read 3 books in my entire life. Two of those books I was forced to read due to school. There was one book that I rented from a library in high school that actually not only changed my perspective but it molded my thinking of what I wanted to do in my life. The book was called House to House A Soldiers Memoir. Staff Sergeant Bellavia’s book tells about his time he spent in Fallujah which is located just outside of Baghdad. As I was reading this book it was so graphic and horrifying you would think it was a fictional book. That wasn’t the case though. The things the soldiers in this book went through left me wondering what I was doing for others and most of all my country. I really want to elaborate on how this book changed me. I remember the first day I understood why I love our great nation. I was just a kid when it happened. It was the year of 2001, in the ninth month, on the eleventh day of the month is when I watched the towers fall. I began to see how people come together as a country. So lets fast forward nine years with this book in my hand. The second battle of Fulljah was one of the bloodiest battles of the Irag War. The way these soldiers looked out for one another while they were battling evil. This wasn’t fairy tale evil either, this was real evil. I felt sorrow for the soldiers that...

...In your own time- consider the symbol of the bottle: What does it say about your “Self Image?” On the day the question was asked, I feel as half full because I see myself as experience with some qualification and the ability to gain more knowledge through learning and finishing the course in order to see the bottle as full. On the other hand I was scared of the fact that will I have time to study hard for this course to achieve the grade, I see the bottle as half empty because I have never done the course before even though I was optimistic, I do not know what to expect and I question myself if this bottle can at least be half full. As a mother of three girls, 2 already in high achievement and the last still in secondary school wanting to be like her sisters, with 4 grand children and 31yesayrs of marriage, I see my self image bottle as half full and not half empty because, I do believe that I have brought up my children to be able to have peace of mind and not having to think of their survival every time and if I have to die today, I know and am sure that they will not suffer nor become liability to the society. And for grandchildren, I have got the best of both I feel proud to be able to introduce them to anyone at any time , they are my pride and joy and for my marriage 31years of anyone’s life is history, I have broken history of some marriage s and this I am very proud of. I am with very little qualification but I am blessed with experience to be able to say...

...Stress is the general term applied to the pressures people feel in life. Headache, dizziness, high blood pressures, ulcer, asthma, high blood sugar and weak resistance to diseases are some of the symptoms of stress. As a teacher we are not free from experiencing stress. Day to day we experience stressful situations from entering the classroom until going to our home. Although stress as we perceive is negative, stress is not necessarily harmful. It can either be extremely pleasant or unpleasant to the individual. It depends on the person’s self concept and attitude towards coping with stress. In fact, some stress is actually good and increase motivation, creativity and productivity. It can help us remain alert, stimulate us to countenance challenges, and derives us to solve problems. ...Since I was a child, happiness was always easy for me to achieve. Of course, the fact that I have always been lucky to live the life I do makes being happy easy. It is my optimism, however, that I give the most credit to. My outlook on life is has and always has been one of light hearted positivity. I may very well be the most optimistic person I know. You don’t just have to take my word for it though, allow me to create a mental picture in which my optimism shines in your brain like sun beams do through an open window. Optimism has been my most prominent characteristic since my early childhood years of dirty feet, scabby legs and food stained shirts. I remember looking through the windows in my home on rainy days as the water pitter pattered onto the floor and into puddles. My face showed no signs of distress as I’d squash my nose onto the foggy glass windows peering out into the watery skies. Sure, I would have to wait a little longer before I could go outside to play again, but I did not see this as a reason to fret. After all, when the rain finally ended (and I knew it would because it always did at some point) I would soon be splish splashing in the miniature pools of water that collected in every concave surface of the street and sidewalk. Mud pies would be made out of the rain drenched soils and baked under the once again visible sun, the earthworms would wiggle their way out to play and a magnificent rainbow would stretch across the sky, glittering with all of its majestic...

...The essence of optimism is that it takes no account of the present, but it is a source of inspiration, of vitality and hope where others have resigned; it enables a man to hold his head high, to claim the future for himself and not to abandon it to his enemy. There are many reasons why I chose to look at the cup as half full rather then half empty. Born in to a family full of drugs and alcohol, I some how knew that my life would change. When I was seven years old my birth mother realized she could not take care of my sister and I. There was a great lady that was once my mom’s teacher, she opened her home and most important her heart to us. She welcomed us as we were her own and loved us just the same. From that day on I could not help but to understand there were much more I was suppose to do and all I have to do is keep head up and keep my dreams alive. Starting elementary at the age of seven was a tough and rough challenge for me. I was placed in SLD classes because I started school so late and was far behind my class mates the school though I had a learning disability. Being as determined and positive as I was and most important proving everyone wrong. I excelled in school by the time I got to middle school I was in all advanced classes and only spent two years in Middle school because I was able to skip the seventh grade all together. Reality hit me hard when I became an adult, but I never for got how to keep my hope and find a goals to reach even when things seemed...

...important role in people’s life that someone with self-confidence is more likely to succeed even though confronting with a difficult situation while people feeling inferior to others can lose chances that they could have got. Then, many people would ask, how to build up self-confidence exactly? I should tell those people for certain that there is no absolute or exact solution to the problem of lacking self-confidence. For people who are unconfident have different reasons to feel inferior. Therefore the first thing is to figure out who you are and why you are not confident about yourself. For those who are born pessimistic, they should try to look at the good side and always give themselves optimistic hints like seeing the glass half full instead of half empty. For those who are experiencing defeat for the moment, it’s quite normal to doubt themselves and ask the question “Do I make the right choice at the beginning?” But the truth is, those obstacles are what you must learn to deal with on your road to success. So for now all you need is to get some rest and calm down to analyze how come the failure. With some adjustment, you’ll find your confidence and passion in your work soon. By saying rest, I mean traveling, reading a wonderful book, anything that suits you best. I used to be very unconfident. Throwing my mind back to my middle school time, I once was too afraid or say, too unconfident to stand in front of the class to answer a question raised by my social science teacher. I...

...There is several things that I would have to say I have had to use to make sure that I have continued on the course of action in spite of obstacles and that I have had to use to maintain my focus. Just to name a couple of obstacles that I have had to overcome being injured while I was in the United States Army, dealing with the everyday pain from those injuries, making the decision to go back to school and get my degree, maintaining a grade point average of better than a 3.0 and that is just a couple the list could go on and on. When i got injured I knew that my army career and life was over but I didn’t let this stop me from doing everything that I could I had to dig down deep within me and say I may walk with a cane for the rest of my life but I am not going to stop me. The pain that I have been dealing with and will continue to deal with for the better part of my life is a constant uphill battle but, one thing that I use to overcome this is I tell myself when it gets so bad I cant even get out of bed the pain is there to tell me and show me that I am still alive and that my children need me. When it came to going back to school it was a no brainer but still a battle inside me. I didn’t know if I could do it. I had been out of school for 13 years but I knew I was tired of dead end jobs and that it is what my family needed me to do to provide for them. So the thought of my wife and kids is what I used to get me to go back to school and get a degree. Finally with maintaining a...
