Halloween Party Has anyone heard of a kid who wants to go to school instead of going to play with their friends? Likewise this story “Halloween Party” is identical to the statement above as these kids are so focused on school and their future, that being a kid is nonexistent. Not to mention this story is from 1980, while the mother who is hosting the party only hears thirteen-year-olds talk about Yale, Harvard, Exeter. The kids in attendance at the party only care to talk about how much money they want to make and the title of the job they want. Lillian Ross’s message in “Halloween Party” is the kids are too focused on the future and not present time. Ross discovers all these kids talk about is Exeter which is a prestigious high school and these crazy colleges. Ross states, “his grandparents lives in Texas and owns real oil wells”(110-111). Halloween is a very kid-like holiday, as these kids seem to be the opposite of that. They act too old to be at a Halloween party. As all, they care, about is how much money they are going to make, also what they want to be. She recognizes her son is not interested in money or the schools, he wishes to be an actor. She questions herself if she should be pushing her son harder to have these dreams or thoughts or just let him be a kid. Ross says, “I want to butt in with my questions, but I keep my mouth shut” (87-88). Ross has so many questions why this, why that, but declines to say anything. Ross should feel relieved as she is doing a good raising her son as his attention seems to be normal. In addition, her son seems to be aware of other kids inspirations are far-fetched. She’s curious what happened to being a kid or talking about your French class, something along the lines of that.
