...The Halloween Festival Halloween is a time of celebration where people wear costumes and party while in masks every once a year. It is a traditional holiday that takes place in most countries around the world. Halloween’s tradition began in Northern Ireland and Modern Britain, and it has spread to most of the countries all over the world. To some countries, Halloween is a formal holiday while to others it is still an informal break. The popularity of this festival continues to increase year after year. Media outlets such as radio, television, and movies have helped the festival to grow into America’s second largest commercial holiday. This growth contributes to bringing in an estimated revenue of around $6.9 billion dollars annually. Most people spend the day watching horror movies, visiting important attractions, theme parks, and having snacks at Halloween theme restaurants. I interviewed an American citizen who has quite a lot of information concerning other countries and his country’s Halloween parties. His name is Trevor A. Jonathan, and he was born in the year 1976 in California, United States of America. He joined Harvard University in the year 2002 and undertook a Bachelor of Arts in Development Studies where he graduated in the year 2005 and joined the United Nation’s travel team. ...Like Christmas, New Year’s Day, Ramadan, or Yom Kippur, Halloween is celebrated almost in every country, even if the celebration implies only external attributes, such as pumpkins, costumes, and children asking for candies. Though the initial meaning of Halloween had a lot to do with occult powers, spirits, and protection against evil forces, today it is more of a merry holiday, a little bit spooky, but still enjoyed both by adults and children. So, what are the origins of Halloween? Historically, the word Halloween is a contraction from the phrase “All Hallows Even,” which meant the day before All Hallows Day (more known as All Saints’ Day) (About.com). It was a Catholic holiday dedicated to the commemoration of saints and martyrs for faith; today, though, we know it more as a holiday of trick-or-treating, scary costumes and entourage, and funny pranks. Gradually, Halloween has lost its religious connotations, and has turned into a holiday gladly celebrated by youth and adults across the Western world on October 31. Though it is considered that Halloween has its origins in the early Middle Ages, some scientists think that it is even more ancient. Peter Tokofsky, an assistant professor in the department of folklore and mythology of UCLA, believes that Halloween as we know it today arose from the Celtic festival Samhain (Albany.edu). Samhain was demarcating the end of summer; on this day souls of the dead were believed to be penetrating the real world. This was also the Celtic...

...I was walking in the dark room and a man jumped out at me so I ran. Last year a week before Halloween my family hosted a Halloween party. It was really fun because all of my friends were there with me. It took us around two months to set up for the party. Mostly because of the haunted house taking so much time. Also we had to get a bunch of food and put up all of the decorations. The last thing we had to do was to get all of the pumpkins for the pumpkin patch. When my family first arrived at the party I was amazed to see how many people where already there. We got the bouncy house, slide, and obstacle course set up. Then I went over to the haunted house because I was going to help out. I got my part but I didn’t need to do anything yet because it started at dark. I walked back over to the house and the extraordinary pumpkin pie sitting there. I got myself a piece and when I took a bite an explosion of sweetness and cinnamon blew up I my mouth. Once iu finished it all of my friends started to get here. I walked around with all of them for a while. We just talked most of the time. Then it started to get darker. Everyone met up in front of the haunted house so just to make sure we all knew our parts. Everyone did so we got into place, at this time the line already had about fifty people in it. I was working outside in the woods. That was the part in the front of the haunted house. I could smell the smoke of the fire rising from where I was at. The people started to come through...

...Trick-or-treating is a customary celebration for children on Halloween. Children go in costume from house to house, asking for treats such as candy or sometimes money, with the question, "Trick or treat?" The word "trick" refers to a (mostly idle) "threat" to perform mischief on the homeowners or their property if no treat is given. In some parts of Scotland children still go guising. In this custom the child performs some sort of trick, i.e. sings a song or tells a ghost story, to earn their treats. The practice of dressing up in costumes and begging door to door for treats on holidays dates back to the Middle Ages and includes Christmas wassailing. Trick-or-treating resembles the late medieval practice of souling, when poor folk would go door to door on Hallowmas (November 1), receiving food in return for prayers for the dead on All Souls' Day (November 2). It originated in Ireland and Britain,[14] although similar practices for the souls of the dead were found as far south as Italy.[15] Shakespeare mentions the practice in his comedy The Two Gentlemen of Verona (1593), when Speed accuses his master of "puling [whimpering or whining] like a beggar at Hallowmas."[16] In Scotland and Ireland, Guising — children disguised in costume going from door to door for food or coins — is a traditional Halloween custom, and is recorded in Scotland at Halloween in 1895 where masqueraders in disguise carrying lanterns made out of scooped out turnips, visit homes to be rewarded with cakes...

...It was a warm and night and I was outside on Halloween. There were many children getting all of the savory candy in my neighborhood. I , on the other hand, was stuck passing out candy at my house instead of eating it. If you haven’t had to pass out candy on Halloween, then let me describe the interminable and torturous job that was thrown upon me on Halloween. First, everyone tries to take more candy than they’re supposed to, and honestly they already have enough candy so they should just take one piece. Also, it’s practically torture watching kids get candy while you have to sit alone and have nothing. Finally, rarely anyone says “Trick or Treat” anymore. That’s the whole point of halloween, so now kids get candy for walking up to your door dressed...

...In mid October, leafs would cover the ground forming what looked to be an orange ocean stretching for miles. Walking down the long, gravel road home after school grew on me nostalgically as I had did it so many times before. The sight of leafs and semi cold weather was a perfect sign that Halloween was right around the corner. As any other kid I was piqued with excitement and wonder to what costume I would wear that Halloween. Less than a week away to Halloween I had gotten severely sick. “But mom i'm fine enough to go walking down the street for peats sake!,” I said trying to hide my fatigue. “You’re too sick to go walking in the cold like this hun,” she replied optimistically. She had seen past my lie, the words echoed in my head, filling...

...John Carpenter’s Halloween: A Film Critique Michael Chapes Instructor David Hayes ENG 225 February 13, 2014 “It's Halloween, everyone's entitled to one good scare.” - Sheriff Leigh Brackett As long as there have been stories, there have been stories about the other, the unrealities we might categorize today as fantasy... Early myths in all cultures are populated by demons and darkness, early Egyptian mythology resounds with tales of a world beyond the physical, a realm of the spirits, to be revered and feared. Classical mythology is filled with monsters such as the Cerberus, the Minotaur, Medusa, the Hydra, the Sirens, Cyclops, Scylla and Charybdis, to name just a few. Every culture has a set of stories dealing with the unknown and unexplained, tales that chill, provoke and keep the listener wondering "what if..?" Horror films are the present-day version of the epic poems and ballads told round the fires of our ancestors. Horror movies of the 1970s reflect the grim mood of the decade. After the optimism of the 1960s, with its sexual and cultural revolutions, and the moon landings, the seventies was something of a disappointment. By 1970, the party was over; the Beatles split, Janis Joplin, and Jimi Hendrix died, while John Kennedy, his brother Robert, and Martin Luther King were all felled by an assassin’s bullet. These tragedies seemed to be just the first domino to fall, for then came Nixon...

...The Production of Halloween The “New Hollywood” era was an era that stretched roughly from the late 60s to the early 80s where there was a wave of young filmmakers who brought a new style into the “New Hollywood” era. A new and improved way of presenting a story was brought, referred to as “post-classical cinema”. These new films were funded and financed by major film studios and introduced a style that wasn’t seen as “traditional” (Hitchman). The “New Hollywood” era films were known to redesign the classic genres of Hollywood like the crime and war films, thus showing a more critical view of society in the past and present. The change in market during the period went from a middle-aged high school educated audience in the mid 60s, to a younger, more affluent, college-educated demographic and by the mid 70s, a majority of all moviegoers were at least under 30. There was desperation in studios during this period due to status of the economy. The best thing that happened to the filmmakers was that they brought an emphasis on realism (Citation 1). The movie “Halloween” is known as one the greatest independent slasher films ever, created off of a budget of $300,000 and brought $70,000,000 in revenue. Halloween was directed by John Carpenter, produced by Debra Hill and written between the both of them. The movie was set in Haddonfield, Illinois, mainly on Halloween 1978. This movie was the break for “New Hollywood” actress Jamie Lee Curtis (Laurie Strode). John...
