Hamlets madness is not an act but rather a result of him suffering from schizophrenia a form of mental illness. After the death of his father Hamlets mental health began to deteriorate as a result he went into a state of depression which inevitably evolved into a mental illness. Hamlets depression is evident as he wishes not commit suicide stating, “Or that the Everlasting had not fixed / His canon 'gainst self-slaughter! O God, God!” ( Act 2 Scene 1).
