“As I stood in front of the courtroom I heard my father say “I cut off my son.” As the judge listens and then nods his head yes, I knew that my life would be changed...According to Hammurabi’s code a father can choose to disinherit his son. Now what even is Hammurabi’s code is the question. Hammurabi’s code is the first ever set of laws made over 4,000 years ago and it is important because it helped shape our laws we have today. These laws were made to protect the weak. I believe that Hammurabi’s code is unjust because people did not get to help make the laws or give idea’s, laws were different for different genders, and laws depended on your social class. Hammurabi’s code might have been fair for some but unfair for others. For example in Document C it states that “If a man strikes the daughter of a free man and causes her to lose the fruit of her womb, he shall pay 10 shekels of silver.” And then in another rule it says “If he has struck the slave girl of a free man’s and causes her to lose the fruit of her womb, he shall pay 2 shekels of silver.” Because he said he will give the free man's daughter 10 shekels but he will only give the slave 2 shekels just proves that Hammurabi gives more importance to the higher classes. Hammurabi should consider making his laws the same for all social classes.
I believe that Hammurabi’s code is not just because people did not help discuss the rules, rules were different for different genders, and the rules depended on your social class.
