Babylon was a small city state. Hammurabi had become the king of Babylon in the 18th century, and ruled for 42 years. In Hammurabi's 38th year he decided to carve 282 laws on a large stone pillar. The 282 laws were called Hammurabi's Code, and debate on whether these laws were just or unjust has been going on for some time. So, is Hammurabi's code just that? No it was not, for two reasons it was harsh and completely unreasonable.
First of all, Hammurabi’s code is way too harsh. In document B law 215, it states, “If a son has struck his father, his hands shall be cut off."
