...Typhoon Megi (Earth Science Make it Relevant) Typhoons are mature tropical cyclones that are created in the northwestern part of the Pacific Ocean. Now, a tropical cyclone is characterized as numerous thunderstorms that contain heavy rain showers and high-speed winds. They develop over large, warm bodies of water and loose their strength when moving overland due to friction from the structures on the surface. Also, the warm water gives the typhoon the energy it needs to be powerful and without the water its energy decreases. Typhoon Megi (Korean for, “catfish”) was a powerful tropical rainstorm that devastated the west Pacific region. Megi was a high-set, extremely cold (220 Kelvin/-63 degrees Fahrenheit) typhoon that made a huge impact on various regions (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration [NOAA] 2010). Hurricanes are considered the greatest storms on Earth, and believe it or not, a hurricane is also a typhoon and a cyclone. Hurricane is derived from Huracan, referring to a Carib god of evil. Usually hurricanes form between latitudes of five and twenty degrees over tropical oceans, except the South Atlantic and eastern South Pacific. The North Pacific has the greatest amount of storms. In the western Pacific, hurricanes are called “typhoons,” and in the Indian Ocean they are referred to as “cyclones.” A hurricane has wind speeds of seventy four miles per hour and a round circulatory motion. Mature hurricanes average three hundred and seventy five miles...

...have been used as a reinforcement since ancient times. In the 1900s, asbestos fibers were used in concrete. In the 1950s, the concept of composite materials came into being and fiber-reinforced concrete was one of the topics of interest. But due to health risks linked to asbestos, its substance in concrete and other building materials were replaced. Also, in the 1960’s, steel glass and synthetic fibers were used in concrete. Since then, new fiber-reinforced concretes are being researched to improve the tensile properties of concrete. ...Economic Warfare: Philippines Offered $500 Million in Aid Andrew V. Pontbriand Activist Post The World Bank is offering the Philippines $500 Million in the form of a loan. Benevolence or a chance to own more land, people, and resources? The recent Typhoon in the Philippines was one of the largest storms in recorded history, causing devastation unimaginable to the human mind. Some reports estimate as many as 10,000 dead or missing. The storm itself had sustained winds at 195+ MPH, and displaced and affected 9.8 million people, and 500,000 homes. The World Bank has offered to loan the devastated country $500 Million dollars in the form of a loan; but should the Philippines accept this offer? In recent history, it had been realized through first-hand accounts, common sense, and their own statistics and documents; that both the IMF and World Bank are not the benevolent entity seeking to provide monetary stability to countries that are impoverished, or have experienced devastation such as the Philippines. Here is a brief description of how the IMF and World Bank take over entire countries with the stroke of a pen: A country is underdeveloped, and is experiencing social anarchy, malnutrition, and economic ruin. The World Bank will come in and offer the country a huge loan, to build infrastructure, schools, power supplies, roads, and other means to a 1st world lifestyle or one similar. Of course, the Government, or Dictator depending on who it is will usually...

The three firms comprise the first tier of the suppliers while Zamboni is the second tier. Moreover, after the voltage regulators have been re-engineered, the company can then move to the next tier of suppliers, which is the speed controller supplied from Oberfranken. After the Viro cars have been produced, the company starts to distribute the final products to its customers. In this case, the customers that the video mentioned are the President and his daughter as well as other 25,000 units of orders. To make things clear, below is a diagram that shows how the supply chain looks like: 2) Outsourcing is the contracting out of a business process to a third-party. Companies use outsourcing to reduce costs by transferring portions of work to outside suppliers rather than completing it internally. That is because in a more and more globalized business world, it is sometimes more affordable to purchase materials or labor from places with comparative advantages rather than to produce them within the company itself. Therefore, financial savings is the biggest motivation for outsourcing. As for the differences between offshoring and outsourcing, offshoring means getting work done in a different country while outsourcing happens both domestically and internationally. Additionally, it is possible to...

...Chapter 1 The Problem and Its Background Introduction Changes are permanent thing on earth. Are the people is ready enough to accept the changes on the educational system? The current opening of classes here in the Philippines usually starts from June to March but our lawmakers want to amend the opening of classes. The existing school calendar which spans from June to March is often disrupted as destructive typhoons plague the region during the rainy season that’s why our lawmakers decided to move the opening of classes from September through May to avoid numerous class suspensions and serve to protect the students during strong typhoons. The Department of Education said that it is open to the proposal by some sectors, including lawmakers to move the opening of classes but they want to ensure the comfort of the students in school and stresses the need for a comprehensive study. While the Department of Education is open on the proposal, some did not welcome this idea. An initial survey on the matter conducted way back in 2009. On the respondents, 66 percent were against the move while 34 percent were in favor. [1] Also, another ground for rejecting the proposal is the traditions celebrated during summer and being not conducive in learning because of hot weather during March. The delay in suspension of classes is one of the reasons why our lawmakers and other sectors in the community urge to move the classes from June to September. Unexpected...

...One of the most noteworthy and more recent is Operation Damayan. Joint Task Force 505 mainly composed of The USS George Washington crew and elements of the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit from Okinawa facilitated Operation Damayan, a US military effort conceived to conduct relief operations in areas affected by Typhoon Yolanda. In detail, US military aircrafts were able to carry out aerial surveys of affected areas, transport aid workers and relief supplies alike, and relocate evacuees. Also, American Marines were able to help in road clearance efforts which quickly enabled the use of trucks in distributing relief supplies (Lum et al. 8). Truly, the US was able to augment the efforts of the Philippine government in helping the victims of Typhoon Yolanda. Through its quick response to the immediate needs of the victims as well as hastening the relief efforts by adding to the human force, the US military was able to save thousands of lives- something that must have been difficult for the Philippine government if it worked...

...” This is the question one has to answer before one does volunteer work. At first I thought that it was easy to answer with a yes, but when super-typhoon “Reming” struck the Bicol Region and left us in darkness, literally and figuratively, I had second thoughts. However, when I thought of my responsibility, I joined the relief and rehabilitation operations of our University called “Anduyog AQ: Tabang Sa Tugang.” Anduyog AQ endeavored to help the victims of Reming by distributing relief goods, providing psycho-social therapy like stress debriefing and other services. I felt out of place in our group of volunteers because more than half were nursing students (nursing is the most popular course in our school). I kept asking myself, what is a political science student doing here? I did not know how to dress a wound; I actually hated to see the wounds of other people. The first night that I had to sleep in the relief center, I felt very uncomfortable. There were no lights, no beddings, not even a good bed. The food that we had to eat was a foretaste of what we would be eating for the next few weeks: mostly overcooked rice and “karninas” a combination of “karne” (meat) and “sardinas” (sardines). That time, I thought of only one word: “agony.” But when I remembered what I had seen when we went around Albay right after the typhoon, I stopped complaining. At least I have food to eat, I told myself. Having to walk under the blistering sun, to work until I was exhausted, to eat the...

...fref=ts). With a population of 161, 375, it is located along the seacoast and at the eastern margin on the delta of Agno River (Dagupan City Disaster Coordinating Council, 2011). It has a total land area of 4008 hectares with 31 barangays. It lies one meter above sea level and Pantal River flows through the city. This poor elevation of the City makes it more vulnerable to flooding. This geological characteristic of Dagupan is the reason why the City is the catch basin of flood waters from the neighboring towns as there are seven river systems that traverse Dagupan City, all of which drain out to the Lingayen Gulf. Flooding occurs due to the exit point of the two bigger river systems in Pangasinan, namely the Agno and the Toboy-Tolong rivers and by the onset of high tide.It is with this reason that when there are heavy rains, storm surges and typhoon, Dagupan City is directly affected with flood. Typhoons are responsible...
