In The Revenant by Michael Punke, nature plays the role of God in Glass’s predicament and lays the foundation for his longevity, proving nature controls the outcome of every person and situation in this novel.
In chapter three, an enormous, vicious bear attacks Hugh Glass leaving him “tore to pieces,” (Punke 27). As known thus far, Glass has survived up to this point. Glass fired a single bullet aimed at the heart in the wakening moments of the attack, but it failed to have an immediate effect. In what seemed like his last moments nature, almost like God, decided it was the bear’s time to die, leaving Glass one scathing mark away from certain death. If the bear had not died, Glass would have fallen victim to nature’s cold
