...all life is too precious to waste it. As a waiter, customers often asked me, “You smile all the time, how can you be happy every day?” I answer something along the lines like, “You know, life is good!” or “The smell from our food makes me smile.” If a coworker asks then I typically reply, “It’s a tip from years of experience. The longer you serve, the brighter your smile is.” This response makes my coworker thinks that although work is not like Disneyland, it is still possible to put up a smile and lift up the whole atmosphere. Servers are trained to smile all the time because a business owner knows that happiness is transmittable. A happy server makes happy customers, happy customers will come back and even bring a friend with them next time. As a server, I smile not only to fill up my tip jar, but also to lift the spirits of my coworkers. Hence, I can spread my happiness to everyone they interact with for the rest of the night. There is more behind my smile than I typically reveal. It is more often than not, a genuine smile. I used to be a depressed teenager. I was extremely suicidal during a few of the years I was depressed. I was forced to spend a night in the hospital because I was threatening to kill myself. I used to smile at the thought of suicide because it was my way out. It was my way to finally be able to get rid of...

...Gratitude and Well-Being Philip C. Watkins Eastern Washington University Content This chapter attempts to review the research that speaks to the relationship between gratitude and well-being. Considerable evidence shows that gratitude is associated with emotional and social well-being, and experimental work has provided promising evidence that gratitude causes enhancements in well-being. I propose that gratitude supports well-being because it amplifies the good in one’s life. Gratitude and Well-Being Gratitude is the most pleasant of virtues, though not the easiest…. Gratitude is a mystery, not because of the pleasure it affords us but because of the obstacles we must overcome to feel it. It is the most pleasant of virtues and the most virtuous of pleasures. -Comte-Sponville (2002), p. 132 At a recent convention a colleague asked me, “Why is gratitude so great?” His question came about while discussing the many virtues that seem to result from gratitude (Watkins, 2004; Watkins, Van Gelder & Frias, 2009; Wood, Froh & Geraghty, 2010). In this chapter I will seek to answer this important question. In pursuing this goal I will first attempt to define gratitude and I will present several ways of assessing this emotion and virtue. I will then review the research that speaks to the issue of whether gratitude is all that “great.” Third, I will explore the “how” of gratitude; I will suggest several mechanisms that might help explain how gratitude...

...May 10, 2012 MR. & MRS. GUALBERTO ARANAS Dear Mr. & Mrs. Aranas, Greetings of peace! We cordially extend our heartfelt gratitude to you and your office for the invaluable assistance you have extended to the Archdiocese of Palo, in our preparations and during the installation and canonical possession of the fourth Archbishop of Palo, His Grace Most Reverend John Forrosuelo Du, D. D. yesterday, May 9, at the Palo Metropolitan Cathedral. The reception in Ormoc of the Archbishop and his faithful from Dumaguete and their travel to Palo last May 8 went smoothly. The guests – bishops, priests, religious and lay people alike – enjoyed the simple dinner and short program at the ARCIVU Hall (Palo Metropolitan Cathedral) during the evening. On May 9, the day of the installation itself, we were blessed with a fine weather. The papal nuncio and head of the Diplomatic Corps, His Grace Most Rev. Giuseppe Pinto, D. D., the two cardinals and 61 bishops, and our local government officials graced the installation and canonical possession of Archbishop Du. The luncheon at 12:oo noon was held at Sacred Heart Seminary grounds while cultural presentations entertained our visitors. The whole event was indeed a success thanks to the many persons – thanks to you - who extended their generous assistance. And for the many other favors you and your office have extended to us, again, thank you very much! Cordially in Christ, Rt. Rev. Msgr. Jaime...

...Rosemary, thanks for your points. I find one very important note in your reading and that is, that dealing with people is directly related to their various backgrounds. It is very important that we understand and know that not all people have the same backgrounds or even the same access to resources. Being poor is a great struggle within itself, but when you compound that with being , homeless and hungry, that’s even more complicated. I know from first hand of being a young single mother, trying to make ends meet, ends meeting meant sacrificing “something.” The “something” may have been sacrificing my own meal in order for my child to eat. I remember using charity resources that would offer assistance with housing and food. I am ever so thankful to God for his grace. God placed people in position at the time when I needed them most. The workers at the facilities that I used in Kansas were absolutely phenomenal. They helped me in so many ways, without being judgmental. I was young, single, and broke, far away from family, hungry, practically homeless, a mother and definitely misguided. They helped me by putting me on a path back to work and helped to build my self esteem through counseling. They provided more than enough. That is why I am able to stand firm today on one of my favorite verses, “But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.”(Philippians 4:19, King James Version) You are so correct when you quote the Bible, “I...

...women balancing heavy buckets on their heads while they carried young children on their backs. I tried to absorb the sights and sounds and smells and commit them to memory. As we inched closer to the orphanage, her orphanage, I knew that we were passing the streets where our daughter spent her first months on this earth. My heart ached as I gazed out the window of our van. I had to remind myself to breathe, as I sat in disbelief watching this world, her world, pass by. It was truly unlike anything I had seen or experienced before. Knowing that our precious girl had lived here in this place left me numb. Our arrival at the orphanage was met with shrieks of joy and sweet, quiet voices whispering "Thank you!" in an effort to express gratitude in our own language. I tried to look into each set of eyes as they came up for hugs. I wanted to just hold them all tightly and tell them they are dearly loved by our Father in Heaven. I wished I could sweep them away from this place and show them that the world outside of those gates can be bright and vibrant and beautiful. Their eyes each told a story. A story of loss and despair. Each...

...or no strings attached. Some gifts come genuinely from the heart and are simply a cultural way of thanking someone for their help. Other clients however could have an ulterior motive behind the gift and consider the acceptance of the gift from the helper an indication that their relationship just took a step in a different direction. Whether or not a helper has permission to accept a gift, they must have the knowledge and capability to identify the boundaries of each client and the gift. In the revised version of the American Counseling Association Code of Ethics, it states in section A.10.f. “Counselors understand the challenges of accepting gifts from clients and recognize that in some cultures, small gifts are a token of respect and gratitude. When determining whether to accept a gift from clients, counselors take into account the therapeutic relationship, the monetary value of the gift, the client’s motivation for giving the gift, and the counselor’s motivation for wanting to accept or decline the gift” (counceling.org, 2014).
