...company’s computer systems are software and hardware. Depending on the type of company, their software and hardware may be high-end, or low-end. In regards to my company, I usually use high-end software and hardware. Running an online retail store requires the use of many programs at once. Although running an online store might not seem like much work, it requires a great deal of attention. Using high-end hardware and software places my company at an advantage. According to Technology Guide 1: Computer Hardware, the author states, “In many industries, exploiting computer hardware is a key to achieving competitive advantage” (Rainer & Cegielski, 2011, Technology Guide 1: Computer Hardware). Business System Specifications In regard to my company’s personal computing software and hardware, we use several devices that run off different applications. One of the hardware devices we use is a phone system called MagicJack. “Magicjack is a device about the size of your thumb which plugs into a USB drive in your computer” (Block, 2010, para. How does the magic work?). This hardware device requires a software application to be installed on our computers that enable a phone to be connected to receive phone-calls. Whenever a customer calls our toll-free number, a dial-pad appears on our screens with the caller’s I.D. displayed. We can either pick up the phone or click ignore on the screen if we are busy. The phone-call is then routed to our voicemail. The software for this device has automatic...

...Hardware Hardware is the physical components that make up the electronic devices for example keyboards, mice, monitors etc. One main difference between hardware and software is that hardware can be touched and software cannot. RAM RAM is an acronym for Random Access Memory. It is a type of memory that is most commonly found in computers and other devices such as printers. There are two types of RAM. Dynamic RAM and static RAM. The two types of RAM differ in the technology they use to hold data, with DRAM being the more common type. In terms of speed, SRAM is faster. DRAM needs to be refreshed thousands of times per second while SRAM does not need to be refreshed, which is what makes it faster than DRAM. Flash cards A flash card is a small data storage device that uses a flash memory chip to store data. Flash cards can be quite small in size, with a capacity of a few gigabytes of storage. The memory in these cards is non-volatile, so it does not require a power source to remain intact. Graphics tablet A graphics tablet is a piece of a hardware that is a computer input device. It allows you to make hand drawn images similar to that of a pencil and paper. It consists of a touch screen tablet and a stylus to draw. Monitor A monitor is like a small version of a TV. It displays the user interface and open programs, allowing the user to interact with the computer. Older computer monitors used Cathode Ray Tubes (CRTs) which made them large and heavy. Modern monitors are...

...Hardware and Software Your Name Date Class Name Teacher’s name The system that best resembles the hardware and software used at the nursing home located in PA that I used to work for is the Power Macintosh 9500. According to Wikipedia.org, the system was sold between 1995 through 1997 and has the following hardware installed, “It was powered by a PowerPC 604processor, a second-generation PowerPC chip which was faster than the earlier PowerPC 601 chip. The 180MP and 200 used the enhanced PowerPC 604e processor. The CPU was connected via a daughterboard, and so could be swapped easily. Available were single-processor cards ranging from 120 to 200 MHz, and a dual processor card with two 180 MHz CPUs. It was the first Macintosh to use the PCI standard, with six PCI slots available, with one always needed for the graphics card.” The exact breakdown of system hardware can be seen at the Apple website at the following link, http://support.apple.com/kb/SP492. The overall operations of the system are great for its age and can even be enhanced with a new program entitled “Leopard” (also available from Apple) that could help the overall performance of the system and was actually the oldest model that is compatible with that program. As for the software, we all know that there are significant differences between workgroup, personal, and enterprise uses such differences can be seen with the different programs each use has to offer, some examples of the differences are business...

...Hardware and Software The United States Army uses share folders within their network so that multiple personnel can gain access to forms or regulations. The U.S. military has a contract with Dell Computers to supply the Army with computer systems that all have the same amount of memory and processing speed. The computers all need to be equipped with software that will allow soldiers to use their common access cards, or CACs, to securely log on to military programs such as Army Knowledge Online. Workgroup The software that is offered on most military computer systems is the Microsoft Windows XP operating system, which is the only system that is compatible with the common access card software at this time. The main computer in use in the military is the Dell laptop, which is portable and lightweight. The Dell laptop offers the fastest CPU (central processing unit) at the time of manufacturing and around four gigs of memory. The computer is also equipped with three to four USB (universal serial bus) ports for devices such as an additional common access card reader or a wireless mouse. The computers are all networked together for faster file sharing options and provide the ability to save files and regulations to a share folder. The information technology specialists for each battalion regulate how the computers are used by blocking sites from the network. The military computers also record a log of each common access card that is used to log into the systems, which allows...

...Identify hardware and software needed to secure your choice of networks against all electronic threats. Networking hardware is hardware that is used to help work stations connect to a server. Although there are many different kinds of hardware like bridges, network cards the networking hardware that I have chosen to use in within my company’s network are routers, firewalls and switches. Using both routers and firewalls will help protect not only wireless networks but also those networks that use Ethernet cabling. I chose this hardware because I felt that it’s the best hardware to use when keeping my company’s network safe. The software that I have chosen to use is McAfee Anti-virus security software. This software along with the firewall will keep my company’s network safe and secure. Routers along with firewalls are the top network security hardware needed when it comes to keeping a network almost if not all totally secure. The firewall blocks out any unwanted activity as well block hackers from possibly hacking into our networks and stealing important information that pertains to our company and its customers. Along with the router and firewall networking software also plays a major part. The software is what the firewall uses to create its security barrier over the network. McAfee is one of the top manufacturers when it comes to network security. This software enables the use of not only the internet’s firewall but also the ability to detect viruses, anti-spyware upon...

...Hardware and Software Paper Michelle Gonzalez CIS 205 August 22, 2011 Craig Berg Hardware and Software Paper Many companies rely on technological advancements to keep up with the business demands; almost every business has some sort of information system. Maintaining and upgrading hardware and software is not an easy especially if the company is fairly large. This past week I had the pleasure to sit down with my company’s IT guy and take a tour of his technological brain; needless to say that was a lot of information to take in. I currently work for Sears Holdings Corp. in the Contractor Services Group division; this division in houses several systems used as personal, workgroup, and enterprise levels. At a personal level each employee uses a PC preloaded with the necessary systems to assist our customers; our PC’s are running Windows XP and we recently upgraded to 19 inch flat panels. Our hardware is very basic and it needs a lot of improvement and/or upgrading to be up-to-date in today’s technology world . Each system is guarded with an enterprise ID given to the employee during the hiring and training process. For example, ServiceBench is one of the systems used to locate service and repairs orders, it shows who the assigned technician is, date of service, if parts have been order or if we have to replace the appliance. As a workgroup we have upgraded to a new a software system called Empower; this system replaced our PRIMS scheduling system. Empower...
