Harmon Foods

...1. What was the problem faced by Harmon Foods? Harmon food depends greatly on a production forecast. Many of the business functions depended on the validity of these sales forecast. In fact, when it came to advertising, there was a limited amount of reason for some of the expenditures of this unit. They were spending a large amount of money on advertising when it came to large shipments, which increased supply; but conversely they where spending even more when it came down to the unplanned advertising. This spending even led them to overcompensate the budget and extreme reduction in sales in unsuccessful quarters. This all stems from their use of the sales forecast. The overall problem with Harmon was not only its misspent money in advertising but also its dependency in the sales forecast. Their business was basing future sales on past sales and not quantity demanded. Demand forecasting is a way they could determine what the demand is for the product they are trying to sell. They should focus on the demand they are not obtaining from their competitors. Using demand to dictate supply for the company could be useful for predicting the sales price, but they also have to acknowledge that supply and demand may be cyclical. There might be erroneous reasons for why sales may decrease that they will not be able to predict. The company already acknowledges events when the supply of Harmon food is reduced. They should focus on reducing their advertising costs when they know that...

Who I Look Up Too

...In 1980, Harmon gained a regular role in the prime time soap opera Flamingo Road, in which he played Fielding Carlisle, the husband of Morgan Fairchild's character. Despite initially good ratings, the series was canceled after two seasons. Following its cancellation, he landed the role of Dr. Robert Caldwell on the prestigious NBC Emmy-winning series St. Elsewhere in 1983. Harmon appeared in the show for almost three seasons before leaving in early 1986 when his character contracted HIV through unprotected intercourse, one of the first instances where a major recurring television character contracted the virus (the character's subsequent off-screen death from AIDS would be mentioned two years later). In the mid-1980s, Harmon also became the spokesperson for Coors Regular beer, appearing in television commercials for them.[15] Harmon's career reached several other high points in 1986. In January, he was named People magazine's Sexiest Man Alive. Following his departure from St. Elsewhere in February, he played the lead in the TV movies Prince of Bel Air, co-starring with Kirstie Alley, and The Deliberate Stranger, in which he portrayed the real-life law student turned cross-country serial killer Ted Bundy. With his career blossoming, he gained a role in the 1986 theatrical film Let's Get Harry and the lead role in the 1987 comedy Summer School, again co-starring with Kirstie Alley. Returning briefly to episodic television in 1987, Harmon had a limited engagement on the series...

He followed in his father’s footsteps by becoming a professional golfer in the 70’s and later a professional teacher. In 1995 Sports Illustrated named him the teacher of the year. Throughout his career he has taught many tour professionals, most notable are; Tiger Woods, Greg Norman, Davis Love III, Darren Clarke, Fred Couples, Adam Scott, Justin Leonard, and Mark Clacavecchia. I had a hard time finding information about Mr. Harmon’s teaching styles but I did find some basic information. First is the grip. Butch is a strong advocate of the ‘short thumb grip’. This is referring to the position of your left thumb (for a right handed golfer) on the club. He states that with a shorter thumb you will gain more control of your swing at the top of the backswing and generate more club head speed. Second is your stance. There are many factors that come into play when talking about one’s stance. One of the main things Butch preaches...

Harmon Food Case

...Harmon Foods Case | The Problem Statement Harmon Foods was experiencing significant challenges with forecasting in the sales of Treat, their ready-to-eat breakfast cereal. Huge variations in actual sales versus forecast created a myriad of problems that led to costly production changes resulting in lower profitability. The Company must seek to develop accurate forecasting techniques that will result in low deviations from actual sales. Key Demand Factors Management identified seasonal factors which included Year- End Inventory reduction by Stores, Plant closing (summer) and Salespersons vacations. Non Media promotions like Consumer packs and Dealer allowances impacted sales positively during the months they were shipped. Inventory build-up from shipment of consumer packs created a lag in the subsequent months. Brand managers also provided information on competitor’s strategies and pricing. Management did not consider the following factors and we believe they also affect the demand of shipments of Treat: 1. Increases in the price of raw material: Increases in supply costs will increase production costs and ultimately increase the price of Treat to market. If the price of Treat increases, ceteris paribus (all else remain unchanged), the quantity demanded may fall resulting in reduced shipments. 2. Substitutes and other complimentary products: Price increase in complimentary products like milk may influence consumer’s decision to find other substitutes and shift...

Ted Bundy Research Paper

...Ted Bundy was brought into this world on November 24, 1946 in Burlington, Vermont with the name Theodore Robert Cowell. He began his life as a shame and a secret. His mother, Eleanor Cowell, was only twenty-two years old when she became pregnant with Ted. Since Eleanor was unmarried, she feared the reticule she would face from her deeply religious parents. With that in mind, she was able to give birth to her son at a home in Vermont for unwed mothers. She then later decided to bring Ted to her parents, who lived in Philadelphia. Her parents wanted to hide the fact that he was brought into this world out of wedlock and was an illegitimate child; Ted was raised being told that his grandparents were his adopted parents and his mother was only his sister. A few years later, Eleanor and Ted moved to Tacoma, Washington. In 1951, Eleanor married a man by the name Johnnie Bundy, where the two then had several children together. From all aspects, Ted Bundy grew up in a content, working-class family. However, at an early age, his mother started noticing that he began to show an interest in disturbing and horrifying acts. When Bundy reached the age of about 3, Eleanor noticed that he became oddly fascinated with knives. However, he was shy, but bright child and seemed to do fairly well in school, but did not get along so well with his fellow classmates. As Ted grew into his teenage years, he began to peer into people’s windows and did not think twice about stealing belongings from other...

Steve Harmon Case

...Mr. Steve Harmon has participated in robbery and murder of the innocent drugstore owner, Mr. Nesbitt. There is evidence from eye-witness testimony about what went on the night of the crime. The journal owned by Mr. Harmon that was turned in for evidence, strongly supports the claim that he has participated. He has been on trial for felony murder. We the Jury believe that Mr. Steve Harmon is guilty. We have evidence from Mr. Evans, Mr. Cruz, and the journal of Mr. Harmon help to prove the claim that he is guilty. To begin with, in Mr. Evan’s testimony he explained to Petrocelli and Briggs about how Steve had a part in the robbery. In Evan’s testimony, he stated that, “He was supposed to tell us if there was anybody in the drugstore. He didn’t say nothing so we figured it was alright.” Mr. Evan’s statement gives evidence that Steve had intended to be a part of the crime. He may not have done what he was supposed to do, however he still had played a part in the robbery and murder. Another piece of evidence that strengthens the argument that Steve is guilty is his journal. Steve Harmon’s journal has been turned in for evidence. In his journal, written on Friday, July 10th, it states, “It was me, I thought as I tried not to throw up, that had wanted to be tough like them.” This quote from Steve Harmon provides information that he...

Harmon Versus Bower

...What does Scott Harmon imply with his statement? Motive CEO Scott Harmon's statement, "We're not warm and fuzzy, there's not a lot of cheerleading, and we don't give backrubs on Fridays.", implies that the overall focus in the company is driving force of the product not so much the coddling of the employees, but impeccable production. Scott Harmon is a fan of the one and only Ayn Rand. (Source: http://www.forbes.com/forbes/2003/0217/054.html). The company's mission and name relate directly to Ayn Rand's 1957 novel, 'Atlas Shrugged'. The statement is apparently his credo. Moreover, Harmon is a wee bit headstrong, and driven by profits. His assertion in the company's competence is effervescent and I think many may be intimidated by his way of running things. Harmon creates a clear distinction between emotion and making business decisions. Explain what Marvin Bower meant by his statement. Bower believed "that consulting was not a business but a profession" and that the "basic philosophy was to make money the old fashion way—earning it ethically." I think that he meant that the best way to build a strong company was by values and to give back also. Just by looking at the company's website, they talk about the Soul of McKinsey and its derivative from Bower. This firm speaks on how it was founded on so many of Bower's good leadership (page 255: “the art of motivating employees to enhance their performance in order to achieve corporate goals ethically) ideas and that they give...

Harmon Case Analysis

...The main problem faced by Harmon Foods was a huge variation in the forecasting of sales for the Treat product, a ready-to-eat breakfast cereal with an important market share. The actual sales had varied from 50% to 200% from the forecast made by the general sales manager John MacIntyre. Because the forecasts were so vast and problem causing, Treat’s inaccurate forecasting caused major manufacturing and advertising problems. The plant managers accepted a schedule and made arrangements for crew, machines, materials and storage spaces based on the sales forecast, and staying within the budget allowed. Sudden changes in schedules would lead to loss for the company. Management did identify key factors affecting the demand/shipment of Treat. The factors they identified in the Case Study included, but not limited to, Market Share, Seasonal Factors, and Advertising. Another factor mentioned involves the promotional strategies of its competition. It is necessary to be aware of any and all competitor pricing/promotions of products that compete with Treat. This will allow the company to ensure they price and promote Treat competitively, which in turn will impact sales and help strategize and forecast the demand/shipments more effectively. Management must always go after the opportunity costs and opportunity advantages against its competitors to ensure they keep and possibly grow their market share. A factor that is not mentioned in the case that can affect demand/shipment of...

In the drugstore stick-up, Steve was supposed to be the lookout, but changed his mind later. Steve is not responsible for Mr. Nesbitt’s death. He was not a participant in the robbery, either. Steve Harmon's Murder Essay

...Steve Harmon is on trial for a murder that took place during a robbery. Steve claims to not be involved and the evidence shows he may have somewhat been involved. Though he could not have killed the man. With help from all of the evidence shown below a verdict is reached. In the trial of Steve Harmon, Steve worked as a lookout but was not guilty for the murder of Alguinaldo Nesbitt. With that information it adds a point of how Steve if involved left before the initial robbery happened. Steve Harmon was involved but only as a lookout, before he backed out and left the scene. He is not guilty of Mr. Nesbitt’s murder because he did not hold the gun. Harman left before the robbery meaning he couldn’t of killed Nesbitt...

...Community Today there are many shows that reflect American culture and issues that occur because of it. One of the shows that does an excellent job doing this is Community. Community is an American TV comedy created in 2009 by Dan Harmon. The show not only addresses social issues with a comedic approach, it also delivers great story telling. The show uses race and ethnicity to deal with serious issues, but in a comical way that makes it less controversial. Its use of the sitcom framework allows it to make light of situations and build upon them in the future. It is because of this use of the sitcom formula, that the show has developed a deep fan base that keeps the show alive. Community reflects American culture through its use of stereotypes, sitcom structure, and its development of a cult following. Community’s main cast is very diverse in race, age, and culture. Though the 7 characters are all diverse, they fit into stereotypes sometimes. Troy the black male, was supposed to play sports for Greendale community college, this follows the stereotype of schools getting black athletes to come to their schools. Troy is also portrayed as unintelligent which touches on the stereotype that athletes are not smart. Though Troy follows these stereotypes, Dan Harmon challenges them by making Troy dorky. Troy becomes best friends with Abed, an Indian character that very weird and is only into movies and television. The two have a very strange, childish relationship. They created a best friend...
