...PSY/201 Social Development in Adulthood The topic in social development I chose to write about is mid-life transition or how it is more commonly known mid-life crisis. The reason I decided to go with mid-life transition is that I find it fascinating that we go through so many different changes during adolescence, then we have a large amount of time before our minds need to “reset” again. I see the timing of a mid-life crisis as a time to take control over your life again, break away from the routine that we create for ourselves and use the opportunity to try something new, or broaden our horizons. The article I read that peaked my interest about the dreaded mid-life crisis is “Mid-life Crisis? Bring it on!” it was published by Time magazine in May of 2005 by Nancy Gibbs. It takes a different approach to the mid-life crisis and provides new insight and ways to make your own a positive one. The article started with a story about how the author is going through her own mid-life transition and learning how to own it, instead of letting it own her. The article continues on to tell how the changes that we go through in life shape us into to who we are and how the mid-life transition plays a role in continuing that process. ...Cerebral Lateralization and Functionality PSY/240 Many studies have been conducted in cerebral lateralization revealing different functionalities of the left and right hemispheres. Cerebral lateralization is the process which the two hemispheres of the brain increasingly specialized in particular tasks. There are four methods of cerebral lateralization to study the functions of the right and left hemisphere of the brain. These methods include the sodium amytal test, the dichotic listing test, and functional brain imaging. The forth method of cerebral lateralization is comparing the effects of unilateral left and right hemisphere brain lesions. The sodium amytal test is a language lateralization that is given to patients before neurosurgery. During this test the patient is injected with a small amount of sodium amytal into the carotid artery on one side of the neck. The injection anesthetizes the hemisphere on that side for a few minutes, thus allowing the capacities of the other hemisphere to be assessed (Pinel, 2011). The patients are then asked to recite things such as numbers or letters to see if they still have the ability to speak. The dichotic listening test is a noninvasive test. This test can also be given to health people. It was silly but who’ll refuse to entertain the thought of attending a school for witches and wizards? This book is a spectacular little romp with funny, courageous, and endearing characters that you can’t help but love. Hermione, the young scholar who starts out prim and up-tight but soon becomes a true friend; Ron, the boy who has little money but who has an abundance of family and loyalty to his friends to make up for it; and then there’s Harry, the boy who starts out sleeping in a closet and ends up being a hero. Harry is kind to those that deserve it, fearless when it counts the most, and wonderfully intelligent. So what’s not to love? I don’t get it why some people say Harry Potter is evil. Reflective Portion The first situation that I think is worth mentioning is when Miranda is stuck in Miami due to a hurricane. It was crucial for Miranda to get back to New York because the “twins” had a recital. As a result of this situation, Miranda contacted Andy to look for another alternative to travel. Miranda looks at this stimulus in a way that I suppose no one else would, as she kept true to her dominant, dramatic and contentious communicating style. She remains dramatic by under-exaggerating the weather condition, dominant and contentious by not giving Andy any other option but to look for a flight on that vary same night. Andy on the other hand tried to get control over the situation by remaining calm at first however, when she realized that she was in a tough situation, she started to panic.
