Harvard Style
Based on Style manual for authors, editors and printers revised by Snooks & Co. 2002

Referencing with Harvard
When writing assignments you must acknowledge the source of your ideas and quotes in sufficient detail so that those reading can locate the item. Referencing is important to avoid plagiarism, to verify quotations and to enable readers to follow up what you have written and locate the cited author’s work. The “Harvard style” is a generic author-date style for citing and referencing information used. There are many styles which follow the author-date convention, including the American Psychological Association (APA) and the Chicago Manual of Style. This guide is based on an Australian style manual (AGPS style) now revised by Snooks & Co, 2002. Note: Before you create your list of references, check with your lecturer or tutor for the bibliographic style preferred by the School. Keep in mind the following points: • • Write down all the citation details of a source as you use it. Place quotation marks “ “ around a direct quote and include page number(s) when quoting directly. Insert brief citations at the appropriate places in the text of your document. Compile a reference list at the end of the document that includes full details of all references cited.

In-text citations: In an author-date style, in-text citations usually require the name of the author(s) and the year of publication. A page number is included if you have a direct quote, paraphrase a passage or you want to direct the reader to a specific page. Page numbers may also be included if you are referring to a long work and the page numbers might be useful to the reader. How to create a reference list/bibliography A reference list contains only the books, articles, and web pages etc that are cited in the text of the document. A bibliography includes all sources consulted for background or further reading. A reference list is arranged alphabetically by author. If an item has no author, it is cited by title, and included in the alphabetical list using the first significant word of the title. If you have more than one item with the same author, list the items chronologically, starting with the earliest publication. October 2011 1/12

...Student earning L Centre What is a referencing system? (Author-Date System) HARVARD REFERENCING There are many variations of the Harvard referencing style. This leaflet is based on the AGPS Style Manual (6th edn), 2002. It is advisable to check with each lecturer as to which variation they require you to use and to follow that advice for the work submitted to that lecturer. A referencing system is a standardised way of informing readers of the sources of information, ideas, graphics etc. that are used in any given work, e.g. your assignment. There are a number of different referencing systems, but those most commonly used at Flinders University are: • Harvard (an author-date system) • APA (American Psychological Association, also an author-date system) • The Note system (including footnotes and endnotes). Author-date systems use the authors’ surnames and the year of publication within the text of a work to refer to a detailed list of full references at the end of the work. The Note system uses numbers within the text to refer to details either at the bottom of the page (footnotes) or at the end of the work (endnotes). See the Student Learning Centre (SLC) brochures on the APA and Note systems for details on these systems. Referencing and academic integrity The use of a referencing system to acknowledge other people’s work, ideas and expression is integral to academic writing and academic integrity. See SLC leaflets on Academic Integrity or the 'Academic Integrity...

...Harvard Referencing Guide HARVARD REFERENCING GUIDE HOW TO USE THIS GUIDE This guide is divided into four sections that represent four different types of publications: 1. Periodicals: Journal and newspaper articles: pp. 2-3 2. Electronic publications: pp. 3-6 3. Books: pp. 6-7 4. Miscellaneous publications and materials: pp. 7-8 Within each section, we have organised the information into three columns: • Column 1 lists the different types of source materials that you will need to reference when you are doing an assignment. • Column 2 shows you how to do ‘in-text referencing’ or ‘in-text citation’ – this is where you refer to your sources of information WITHIN your assignment when you paraphrase, summarise or quote. • Column 3 shows you how to cite each type of reference in the ‘Reference List’ at the END of your assignment. This list of references provides your reader with all the information about each source you have referred to in your assignment, so they can find each source you have referred to if they wish. Here are some useful terms with which you need to be familiar: A paraphrase means saying something in another way without changing its meaning, for example, using your own words to express the ideas of an author. A paraphrase may/may not be shorter than the original. A summary is similar to a paraphrase except it is shorter than the original. Summarising involves ‘compressing’ large amounts of information into a few sentences. So it...

...The Harmful Effects of Grade Inflation on Individuals and Society Judy McCarthy DeVry University The Harmful Effects of Grade Inflation on Individuals and Society The Harvard Crimson reported last year that its average grade was A-, and its most common grade was A (Clarida & Fandos, 2013), news that was met with a variety of reactions from embarrassment on the part of the institution to scorn and derision from some, and cautious understanding from others. Most view Harvard’s practice as a result of increasingly relaxed grading procedures over time, resulting in reputedly diminished educational value where it is commonly assumed that “everyone gets an A.” Critics claim that if everyone receives high grades, it is because the curriculum is undemanding, and standards need to be raised; and they are not buying the argument that admission standards at Harvard are high; and, therefore, high grades can be legitimately expected. Harvard is not the only example of institutions ladling out high grades. Our current grading system attempts to place students in a spectrum from good to bad, A-F, based on the results of standardized tests, which measure cognitive skills and attach a metric to them. Proponents argue that a test- and metrics-based system, although imperfect, is still the best standard we have for assessing student learning. They argue that specific practices cause grade inflation, and insist that by addressing them, the problem can be solved. Although a variety...
