...The social environment revolves around money, honor, respectable values and religion; in this case the Islam. Every character is concerned about his place in society and his greed for money. The story is written in third person omniscient point of view. The writer as he describes the setting, moves from character to character narrating the story. In this short story, Hashim is the protagonist. He is the father of Huma and Atta. Hashim comes upon the stolen hair accidentally. He does not return the relic as greed consumes. He justifies his act as a community service basing it on the Islamic views of deity. Hashim turns into a religious hypocrite from a secular person. It reports the results of a survey of 30 Malaysian companies that engaged in downsizing during the economic downturn. Three research questions are probed: 1) What are the general strategies used by companies to downsize, 2) What are the difficulties faced by companies during downsizing implementation, and 3) What are the impacts of downsizing on organizations. The findings show two main strategies are used for downsizing: work reduction and work redesign. The most serious impact of downsizing is organizational ineffectiveness. Keywords: Corporate Downsizing; Malaysia; Economic Downturn 1. Introduction The Asian economy downturn occurred recently is probably deeper and broader than many previous economic downturns. ...Tikrit University Journal for Humanities Vol. ( 14 ) No. ( 3 ) April ( 2007 ) Honorific Expressions in Arabic and English with Reference to other Languages Hashim Sa'doon Saleem Al-Ni'aymi University of Tikreet College of Education Dept. of English Abstract Honorifics have currently occupied an important position within the domain of socio-pragmatic studies of language and within the theories of communication. The basic aim of this paper is concerned with identifying the points of similarity and difference between honorifics in Modern Standard Arabic and English with regard to structure. It also aims at giving a brief account of the term honorifics and how are honorific expressions realized in both languages. It is hypothesized that the structure of honorifics in Modern Standard Arabic is different from that in English. 1. The Concept of Honorifics: Honorifics are derived from outputs of politeness strategies where these directly or indirectly convey a status deferential between speaker and addressee or referent, where they indirectly convey such a status deferential, as in French Tu / Vous pronouns do via the general strategy of pluralizing in order to impersonalize (Brown and Levinson 1978: 183). 1 Honorific Expressions in Arabic and English with Reference to other Languages Hashim Sa'doon Saleem Al-Ni'aymi Honorifics have been defined as “politeness formulas in a particular language which may be specific affixes, words, or sentence structure” (Richard et al., 1985:...

Identity Theft: Perspectives on How to Mitigate the Damage

...most rapidly rising type of fraud in the United States” (Finklea, 2009). One may have their identity stolen from them without even knowing so. This is because it is not necessary to make physical contact, or even make an acquaintance with a victim before assuming their identity. The crime of identity theft may be committed in a number of different ways, most commonly by obtaining personal information from non-secure websites. These actions will not only cause hardship for the victim, who will more than likely have money stolen from them; but it will also have an effect on an entire nation’s economy. “In 2004 one in every twenty-three adult Americans were victims of identity theft, resulting in costs of over $50 billion.” (Hazelah, Ismail, & Hashim, 2011). There are ways to fight identity theft and different nations take different approaches in order to defend against this offense. American Perspective In the United States, insurance companies such as American International Group have established policies to cover companies that may be responsible in an occurrence of identity theft. “AIG has developed corporate identity protection, this policy is designed protect smaller companies from financial disclosure related to the threat of identity theft.” (Marshall, 2006). Although identity theft may be avoided, the victim may not always be at fault for the crime committed against him or her. “AIG covers legal...

Klcc Commercial Project

...KLCC commercial projects Recent search on TheSun daily (2013) has shown that KLCC (Holdings) Sdn Bhd CEO, Hashim Wahir said that their company wants to evolve commercial projects in Kuala Lumpur City Centre (KLCC) region and the gross development value (GDV) is more than RM5 billion. The projects are a luxurious hotel, a 64 levels top level office building, a 6 levels shopping centre that connected to Suria KLCC and a parking lot. According to Hashim, the hotel will have residences, serviced apartments and facilities that linked the hotel with the shopping centre. He also mention that the hotel and residences will be managed by an expert operator but he refuse to reveal its name. These projects are developed by Cititower Sdn Bhd. For the financial matter, he believes that local banks will help giving them some donation. Moreover, Qatari Diar will help them preparing KLCC Holdings’ fund as well as the land. The development above involve stockholders, stakeholders, managers, investors and owners which can result a separation of ownership and management (Jordan, Westerfield & Ross 2011), this is why agency problems might occur on the company. For instance, this project conducted by KLCC Holdings requires an enormous cost which means they need investors who can give huge funds to the project. This problem can lead to Direct Intervention by Stockholders (Investopedia n.d.) whereby the largest institutional investors on the company will take over the company’s stock and...

The Iraq War

...The Iraq War: An Avoidable Situation Introduction Iraq has generally never been a nation at peace, but that did not stop the United States from exacerbating those problems. Following the attacks of September 11 and the invasion of Iraq in 2003 the United States’ actions and counter terrorism strategy created an insurgency that set them up for a long and arduous war. Through what appeared to be a rushed planning process the United States entered Iraq and acted as if they wanted to worsen their situation. This paper will look at how the ordinances passed during the first year in Iraq, due to Paul Bremer’s lack of knowledge concerning counter-insurgency, made the United States government reconsider their strategy in Iraq. These actions combined with a growing resentment towards United States occupancy and Shi’a and Sunni insurgencies caused the United States to change its course of action towards counter-insurgency. The civil war that was beginning only added to the problem. Quickly, they wrote two new field manuals on counter-insurgency and with successful campaigns, led by General Petraeus, regained some stability in the war-torn nation. Background A decade before the War on Terror and the subsequent invasion of Iraq under the Bush regime, there was the Gulf War. Following the Iraqi defeat at the hands of a USA led, United Nations backed force there were strict sanctions placed on weapons, the military, and oil reserves in Iraq. Also, following this conflict, a wealthy...

...ACC 4291 Integrated Case Study | Section 1 | Case Summary | # | 3 | Case Title | Living By Numbers - Value Creation or Profit? | Group 4 | Synopsis In December 2009, Hafiz Hashim is facing a dilemma. As the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of MarineCorp Sdn Bhd and its two wholly-owned subsidiaries, he is in charge of reporting their financial performance to the Board of Directors. The three companies traditionally measured their performance using the Profit figure, but MarineCorp’s parent company, the SURIA Group, recently adopted Value Based Management (VBM) and requires the use of Economic Earnings as a performance measure. This becomes a source of anxiety for the senior management of the three companies as their performance evaluation directly hinges on the measure to be adopted. Protagonist/Decision-maker The protagonist of this case is Hafiz Hashim, the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of MarineCorp Sdn Bhd and its subsidiaries, Green Port Sdn Bhd and Sungai Emas Port Sdn Bhd. MarineCorp, and by extension its two subsidiaries, are all members of the SURIA Group of Companies. Hafiz strongly believes in measuring a company’s financial performance through the value it creates rather than merely reporting on the profit. The case takes place at the end of 2009. Performance Measurement Metrics Comparison NET PROFIT | ECONOMIC EARNINGS (EVA) | Suitable for companies with more intangible assets | Suitable for capital-intensive companies | Benefits the senior...
