Round discovered the physical effect of electroluminescence, an optical and electrical phenomenon in which a material emits light in response to an electric current passed through it or to a strong electric field. The light produced was very dim and not bright enough to stimulate further research. In the early 1960s, groups at RCA, IBM, GE and MIT were working actively on LEDs. Among the first commercially available LEDs was an 870 nm IR device sold by Texas Instruments for $130 US. Around the same time, GE distributed red LEDs through the Allied radio catalog for $260 US.
