These blood tests provide a host of information regarding the risk of the woman having a child having certain birth defects as well (Norwitz & Schorge, 2010). The sample of the mother’s blood is drawn between the 15th and 20th weeks of pregnancy. The multiple markers that are usually tested for include Alpha-fetoprotein screening (AFP). The test measures the AFP, a protein that is normally produced by the liver of the fetus and is present in the amniotic fluid. It crosses the placenta into the blood of the mother. Abnormal levels signal the presence of neurological defects, Down syndrome, twins, defects in the fetal abdominal wall or the miscalculation of dates. Other blood tests that are done include the tests for Hcg, Estriol and Inhibin (Pillitteri & Pillitteri, 2010). The screening is not entirely diagnostic and hence it is not entirely accurate.
