One of the widest spread medical issues that affects adolescents and children today is obesity. A condition that is caused by an excessive accumulation of body fat, obesity currently affects 19% of children aged 6 to 11 and 17% of children age 12 to 19 years (Science Daily LLC, 1995-2009). Children's obesity has dramatically risen at an alarming rate in the last few decades. The rate has close to tripled since the 1960s. On average 25% to 30% of children are touched by obesity or become overweight annually. Somehow, though, the serious and preventable condition of obesity is under-diagnosed and untreated (American Family Physicians, 1999). A reversal of this devastating epidemic must be preceded by a better understanding of its causes, its affects, and how to prevent it. This is the only way of reducing children’s later risks of related physical and mental health issues.
Genetic factors or diseases can be the cause of many cases of child obesity. However, numerous other cases are caused by excessive caloric intake and a dearth of exercise. Should children not receive any education on the bodily effects of overeating and lack of exercise, they may experience later complications in their physical and mental health. Early stages of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea, asthma, joint problems, and high cholesterol are just some of the diagnoses being received by youth today. Type 2 diabetes, a disorder in which the body produces an insufficient amount of insulin is has a reduced sensitivity to it, has previously appeared most often in adults. Now, however, obese children are more prominently among those affected by the disease, which results in additional health complications like blindness, circulation problems, numbness in limbs, and kidney problems. The relationship between health and psychology has become more focused in the 20th century. It has been considered as far back as ancient Greece, but has taken root heavily in the 20th century. Health and psychology has the meaning that our mind and bodies interact with each other. If we are overly stressed then we may likely see physical health effects such as higher blood pressure, increased heart rate, etc. When we keep a positive balance between our physical health and our mental health, then we are working on the close relationship of health and psychology. We can directly affect our health by our lifestyles. By this I mean if we choose to smoke cigarettes, drink alcohol, consume to much caffeine, or be overweight. Since these lifestyle choices affect us physically and mentally many workplaces offer wellness programs to help aide in the education of health and psychology. When an employer makes the choice to provide wellness programs for their employees both the employer and the employee benefits. The employer benefits if they provide medical insurance to the employee in the possibility of lowering their health insurance cost. The healthier lifestyle the employee lives the less cost in time loss from work, or possibilities for workplace injuries...

The Physchology of Health in the Workplace

...Change and Innovation Paper Erica Douglas HCA/250 THE PHYSCHOLOGY OF HEALTH IN THE WORKPLACE May 11, 2014 Instructor: TERI ROSSMAN In any area of life, there will be change and there will be some form of resistance from those who are in their comfort zone. Healthcare is no different. Electronic medical records have bypassed paper records and the hustle of filing charts and retrieving charts. When implementing change, there has to be not only those that work on the technological side of things, there needs to be someone that are involved with the human side of things to work with those who are having a hard time dealing with the changes. Not everyone will adapt to change in the same manner. Some of the older workers are not as computer savvy as some of the new-aged, younger workers. This can create fear in them not only because it is something new but there can also be fear of losing one’s job because of the changes. According to "Successful Workplace" (2014), training and retraining will be key to using EMRs efficiently as first rollouts and follow on releases need to be ‘swallowed’ by healthcare organizations Education and communication can help reduce resistance to change by helping their employees see the logic of the change effort. (Robbins, S., Decenzo, D., & Coulter, M., 2014). Dealing with change is a personal experience for all involved. No two people will adapt to change in the same way. It is important for organizations to be aware that there...

Substance Abuse in the Workplace

...Substance Abuse in the Workplace Valencia Simpson HCA250- Psychology in the Workplace Wakita Bradford August 25, 2013 Substance abuse is the overindulgence in chemical and/or drugs that affect an individual’s physical and mental well-being. There are many factors that influence if someone engages in smoking, drinking alcohol, or use drugs. Many of that is based on personal relationships, society, and sometimes the need to feel like a person is part of the “in crowd”. It not only affects the person that is doing the drugs but also the family and friends of the loved ones. Substance abuse is a disorder that is characterized by a pattern of continued use of medications or controlled substances. The portion of substance abuse that I chose would be marijuana or a legal name would be cannabis. Cannabis is often consumed for its psychoactive and physiological effects which can include heightened mood or euphoria, relaxation, and increase in appetite. Unwanted side-effects can sometimes include a decrease in short-term memory, dry mouth, impaired motor skills, reddening of the eyes, and feelings of paranoia or anxiety. Contemporary uses of cannabis are as a recreational or medicinal drug, and as part of religious or spiritual rites; the earliest recorded uses date from the 3rd millennium BC. Since the early 20th century cannabis has been subject to legal restrictions with the possession, use, and sale of cannabis preparations containing psychoactive cannabinoids currently...

Hca Final: Substance Abuse Paper

...Substance 1 Final: Substance Abuse Frank T. DiBona HCA250 May 12, 2012 2 Substance abuse is a disease that does not discriminate, no matter what race or gender, it can affect anyone, anywhere, at any given time, and children as well as adults can fall prey to this type of addiction. According to Robinson, Saisan, and Smith (2012), “Some people are able to use recreational or prescription drugs without ever experiencing negative consequences or addiction.” (para. 1). I have known people that were addicted to drugs, whether street drugs or prescribed, and I have seen the what they were like when they were clean, as well as when they were high, and I have heard the horror stories that were associated with their addiction. Being addicted can tear apart a family, make a person do things that they would not normally do, and sometimes their addiction would cause problems even when they were clean; people looking for money that was borrowed or stolen, as well as drugs. Families have gone broke, college savings gone, jewelry from a family member taken to get their next fix, household items pawned for a few dollars to buy a bag of heroine that would only last one day, if that, cars repossessed because the money that should have gone to making the payment was used to buy cocaine, and marriages broken...
