The health care field offers a diverse selection of career paths for you based on your interests and education. Job opportunities are available to you in facilities such as hospitals, nursing homes and assisted living communities, primary care practices, clinical laboratories, and dental and optometry offices. Depending on your personal interests, education, and training you may choose a career path in a technical or administrative position. The extent of school & training an individual must obtain is contingent on the career route they chose within the health care profession. Most technical jobs require a substantial amount of higher education and clinical training while administrative positions may require little to no higher education or training. You should keep this in mind when selecting the career path that is right for you. With a variety of technology available to medical agencies, patients can now be diagnosed and treated quicker than they could 30 years ago. One piece of technology that I have always wanted to know more about is the dialysis machine. Though I work in a hospital, my job is medical administration so I never have see for my own eyes how this type of technology works. A couple of years ago my mother went in for a routine checkup. A few days after her checkup, she was notified that both her kidneys were deteriorating and that she had about a year to live, if she did not have a kidney transplant. The entire family was in shock, disbelief, how could this happen to us. We did not sit around long feeling sorry for ourselves. Once the dust cleared my two sisters and I began doing research on what we could do to help our mother. It did not matter that I was in Korea, or my older sister was in Oregon and the other in California. We all pulled together and did our homework and shared what each had found. To make a long story short, my mother did have a transplant; the donor was my younger sister. Today both my mother and sister are leading healthy lives. This was the result of a great man. His name was Dr. Sydney R. Garfield MD. Dr. Garfield is one of the pioneers in voluntary prepaid healthcare plans which was a direct precedent to the federal government enacting the Health Maintenance Organization Act of 1973. Dr. Sydney Garfield opened up a fee for service hospital in 1933. However, insurance companies were slow to compensate his practice and delinquent or non-payment from patients had negative impacts on his practice. This led Dr. Garfield to initiate an agreement with insurance companies to charge a prepaid fee of five cents a day to workers. Under a Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) plan patients and/or employers paid a fixed monthly payment. This provided patients with healthcare that included preventive medicine checkups, immunizations, office visits, and hospitalization. Professionally and personally, Kaiser Permanente has been my employer and healthcare provider for the past several years. The HMO system is cost effective to our patients compared to a pay as you go healthcare plan. Dr. Sidney Garfield opened up his first hospital in 1933 called Contractor’s General Hospital.
