...Health Care Museum Monica Joshua HCS/235 July 2,2014 Health Care Museum After reading this week chapters and having the knowledge of heath care field, I have came to understand that there are several aspects from vaccines to new disease. In this paper I will discuss five exhibits and how it has changed health care. Vaccine Vaccine has played a huge role in human history. Dr. Edward Jenner, introduced the first vaccination in 1796 for small pox. In 1809 there was only the state of Massachusetts that mandated vaccination for small pox and other states followed. In 1879, the Anti-Vaccination Society of America stated that no one should be mandated to be vaccinated due to the vaccine causing corruption in the blood and also cause the spread of disease instead of curing it. Penicillin Alexander Fleming discovered penicillin in 1928. Before penicillin was introduced there was no cure for infections. He observed that Staphylococcus had been contaiminated by a blue-green mold but discovered that bacteria adjacent to the mold were being dissolved. Birth The delivery of babies has changed tremendously in health care. In early years women was forbidden to practice medicine. If they did they were considered being witches and were put to death. Barber-surgeon was most common medical practitioners that delivered babies. Health Insurance In the early 1900’s health insurance seemed to be inevitable. During this time and age women were the primary caregivers. Domestic medicine also so known as physicians treated the serious cases. As the Health Care Hall of Fame Museum curator I would integrate several exhibits that have changed health care. Midwives Midwifery has been a long standing practice for women as childbirth was something that normally took place at home. In the 15th and 16th century midwifes were thought of as “the early companions of the devil” (The Witchammer, 1487). These women had not been compliant with the Frankfurt Midwifery Code which had been established by the Catholic Church and had been in effect for over 130 years. As a consequence of this, these individuals were burned alive. Midwifery became established in the early 18th and 19th century in Europe. They were trained to be both nurses as well as midwifes. In the absence of a physician, during the first 250 years midwifes were at the front end of the birthing process. Immigrant women who had learned the trade in their country of origin had learned the trade and passed their learning’s and skills to midwife of a younger generation. Thus there were two types of midwifes that developed in the US. One was a Nurse-midwife which are trained in nursing and midwifery as well as Direct Entry Midwives which would not be nurses...

First, I would like to start with penicillin; on how it has changed the way we use and viewed medicine. Second, I would like to use military combat and its part into healthcare. Third, nurses; their work ethic alone has shaped the hospital environment. Fourth, medical imaging, that technology alone has moved health care to what is now modern day. Lastly, insurance and how it has changed over the past century. Penicillin, known to be founded by Alexander Fleming around 1929. His findings where that of a significant proportion. Penicillin became a firm foundation for medicine after WWI, being that it was able to heal just about every bacterial disease that we have encountered thus far. Not only has penicillin became the leading foundation for further antibiotics but it also led to more research into the world of medicine. Penicillin itself has saved roughly 200 million people in its course of finding. That my friends, you can say a reason it is a huge tribute to modern day health care. It also had an impact on the military portion of health care and how it helped shaped the way combat doctors and surgeons were able to perform the procedures necessary to save the lives of those who gave theirs.
