Introduction
“Gastric bypass is the operation recommended by the National Institute of Health for treatment of morbid obesity because of its low morbidity and mortality rates and excellent long-term results regarding weight loss” (Tian, 2011). The laparoscopic surgical procedure for obesity is generally referred to as the Lap-band procedure and is known for the smaller and less invasive incisions. The goal of the chosen study was to determine the effects of the laparoscopic surgery and the gastric bypass based on hospitalization time, surgical duration, rate of mortality, and the surgeries that are repeated. The patients used for the study were each morbidly obese and had tried and failed at other diet and exercise methods however gender, age, race, weight, and height did not factor in when randomly selecting the test patients for participation in this meta-analysis. Some exclusions were made due to previous surgeries for weight control, respiratory and cardiac issues, and certain diseases that would be complicated by participating in the study and alter the results obtained.
Data Collection Methods
The data collection procedures used in the study were appropriate and in the form of a meta-analysis. The information was gathered from studies during 2001, 2004, and 2006 consisting of 422 patients randomly selected with some similar circumstances from the locations of United States, Spain, and Sweden. 208 of the patients were in the open gastric bypass and 214 of the patients were included in the laparoscopic group. “Each study was critically reviewed by two researchers for reliability of our meta-analysis” (Tian, 2011). The data was collected separately by two researchers and was reviewed and confirmed by a third to ensure reliability and validity.
