...Disease in the News Vermetria Oliver HCD/235 AGUC0910D May 20, 2012 Amber Cochran ADVANTAGES • Reduction in human errors: Not having to rely on illegible or incorrect files, inaccurate filing and unsecure storage means that electronic medical records eliminate many layers of human contact for an overall reduction in what can become costly mistakes. • Safety and security: While paper files can be lost, damaged, stolen or subjected to natural disasters, electronic medical records circumvent many of these situations with greater safeguards. • Cost-efficiencies through data consolidation: By creating a centralized location for digitized medical records, this system reduces duplication of efforts and documents, and increases the speed of exchanging information. This saves on labor costs as well as enhances operational efficiencies that increases productivity through a greater volume of transactions. DISADVANTAGES • Perceived threat to privacy: Some believe that, instead of protecting privacy, a digital system means that a certain amount of confidentiality is lost and information can be accessed by unauthorized parties.. However, because of HIPAA compliance, medical record document management companies go through great lengths to ensure patient information remains secure and accessible in a legally compliant manner. • Perceived lose of human oversight: With the advent of more technology, some fear systems that are fully automated with no human...

...Week 3 DQ 2 Answer Regulatory to me is needed because it is when there is a rule in place that is backed by the government to make sure that everyone is getting the same services and they also comply with the law of ethics as well as government regulations. If there was none in place then everyone would all charge whatever they wanted as well as not giving you the services needed or being held responsible. But that doesn’t mean that when you take it to court it will hold up because it may not be a law enforced in that state. Laws have to be put into place by some sort of legislative body and that makes it better than a regulation. Accreditation is the way to make sure you get the right care with safety as well as the best quality available and there are agencies there for you when things go wrong. My choice is the CDC which is the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention because where would this country be without it. Some of the diseases are Tuberculosis, Measles, Salmonella and many others. These can kill us all if left uncared for and not stopped when they are started so it’s good to know that we have a system in place tracking when things happen. We all have access to their website and can see what is going on in every state which means that we can keep ourselves updated. The CDC has helped to keep the spread of disease down which means that even if another country wants to try and use some type as a lethal weapon our country will be prepared for it in...

...Perspective on Health Care Princess Ericka F. Escalante HCS/212 December 08, 2011 Dr. Scott Bastro Perspective on Health Care Through the years, the history of healthcare has evolved and had some radical changes in services offered to consumers. The new technological advances had a great impact in our society and, because of these new inventions and research, people tend to seek more help from healthcare professionals with all their healthcare concerns. In the past, patients need to go the doctors to get their test results, have their prescription filled and book their appointments. They also need to go to the doctor’s office and physically talk to their provider if they have concerns about their health. Nowadays, consumers can interact with their physicians through the phone or even internet. Patients can make their own appointment according to their availability through the use of the internet as well. Some physicians post test results and offer to fill your prescription on their website. This new way of obtaining healthcare services is very helpful especially to those people that are busy with work, school and family. Providing health services has been my dream since I was a little kid. I have been fascinated on how to provide services to the elderly people. That is why I am trying to pursue in geriatric area of health care. I want to help in preventing and treating diseases and disabilities in older adults. Geriatrics focuses on the needs of an elderly person, monitoring...

...Health Care Museum Latesha Leftwich Health Care Delivery in the U.S. - HCS235 June 17, 2013 Elaina Mahlan, Facilitator Health Care Museum The United States health care system did not always exist and before 1920, most people did not have health care treatment. In order to understand our current healthcare system you need to know about the history of healthcare, how it started, and its evolution. In my research, you will learn about the history of and present usage of the American Medical Association, hospitals, nurses, Medicare/Medicaid, and the HMO Act of 1973. Exhibit A: The American Medical Association The American Medical Association (AMA) came about to make sure that traditional medicine and scientific concepts was used in colleges that deemed themselves as medical schools (Encyclopedia, 2001). A group of doctors who were a part of different local and state associations formed the AMA. They thought that medical education was not keeping up on a national level, that there were no consistent curriculums, and that medicine was not about healing arts associated with mystic beliefs (Encyclopedia, 2001). Since its start, the AMA has closed huge gaps in how medical students are taught and how healthcare is delivered (Lazarus, J. 2013). I believe that the AMA should be a part of my museum because without the AMA science would not have been applied to healthcare and without those sciences how would we have developed in the knowledge of healthcare today? The AMA is committed...

...Trends, Benefits, and Impact of Consumer Health Insurance T Burke Health Care Delivery in the U.S./HCS235 July 17, 2010 Trends, Benefits, and Impact of Consumer Health Insurance Healthcare Insurance, better known as health insurance, like that of other forms of insurance has been around for a very long time, dating back to the first ever proposal in 1694 by Hugh the elder Chamberlen from the Peter Chanberlen family (Wikipedia). What is health insurance? Defined by a website entitled Ask.com health insurance is; “insurance against expenses through illness of the insured” (Ask.com, nd). Health insurance was originally established to provide accident insurance and operated like some of the disability insurance of modern times we have today. Today consumer health insurance programs have evolved into a comprehensive collection of coverage from accident to emergency room care and from the simplest minor scrape to the most difficult surgery. For one to have a better understanding of how the consumer health insurance works and has evolved from the past 75 years, one should be more familiar with some of the historical trends consumers have dealt with over the years, the type of benefits that are available, provider networks, some of the impacts benefits have on the healthcare delivery system, resource management and the overall health status of individuals and society. As a consumer of health insurance it is important to first have an understanding of...
