Case 1 - HE SAID, SHE SAID

Shirley and Abdul both work for a software development company. The manager of the new product division was originally the leader of a project team for which she interviewed and hired Abdul. Shirley, another project team member, also interviewed Abdul but strongly opposed hiring him for the project because she thought he was not competent to do the job.
Seven months after Abdul was hired, the manager left the project to start her own company and recommended that Abdul and Shirley serve as joint project leaders. Shirley agreed reluctantly- with the stipulation that it be made clear she was not working for Abdul.
The general manager consented; Shirley and Abdul were to share the project leadership.
Within a month Shirley was angry because Abdul was representing himself to others as the leader of the entire project and giving the impression that Shirley was working for him. Now
Shirley and Abdul are meeting with you to see if you can help them resolve the conflict between them.
Shirley says. “Right after the joint leadership arrangement was reached with the general manager, Abdul called a meeting a the project team without even consulting me about the time or content. He just told me when it was being held and said I should be there. At the meeting,
Abdul reviewed everyone's duties, line by line, including mine, treating me as just another team member working for him. He sends out letters and signs himself as project director, which obviously implies to others that I am working for him."
Abdul says: "Shirley is all hung up with feelings of power and titles. Just because I sign myself as project director doesn't mean that she is working for me. I don't see anything to get excited about. What differences does it make? She is too sensitive about everything. I call a meeting and right

He Said-She Said

...Case Study #5 “He said….She Said” Vicky McFerren Lankford Che Baysinger CM301-02 In the case of “He Said, She Said”, Marie is always trying to protect her son, no matter what the cost to her relationship with her fiancé Mike. Lenny on the other hand, seems to be the lower-powered person using seduction to try and charm or trick his mother into going along with what he wants. Marie uses avoidance and destructive competition instead of resolving the matter in a more collaborative or accommodating way. While Mike wants to engage in conflict to resolve the matter, Marie wants to protect her son by avoiding it, no matter what the cost to their relationship. Marie’s preference for engaging or avoiding Mike can develop into a rigid style, and when this happens, constructive conflict becomes very difficult according to Wilmot and Hocker. Every time the issue of her son defying the rules and doing as he pleases comes up, Marie and Mike will have to reach some type of an agreement on the “avoidance/engagement”, or this metaconflict will override any other emerging issues (Wilmot & Hocker)”. Marie uses avoidance to sidestep the issue by withdrawing from the issue and destructive competition through personal criticism when she tells Mike; “Real punishment? How would you know? You never had children. What do you know about being a parent? You never even call your own mother.” (Case Study) This competitive tactic can often damage a relationship. It “locks the...

He Said She Said

...1. Abdul and Shirley seem to have several conflicts occurring simultaneously. Identify as many of these individual conflicts as possible. Battle for power, equality, prestige, status 2. Are there any general statements you can make about the overall nature of the conflict between Abdul and Shirley? It appears Shirley is in a bid for power wanting with Abdul. She wants the recognition of being a project leader but doesn’t appear to be willing to put in the effort on this project. Abdul is trying to take the lead on it to prove to Shirley that despite her original strong opposition to hiring him he is competent to do the job. 3. What are the possible ways to deal with the conflict between Abdul and Shirley (not just the ones that you would recommend, but all the options)? Fire Shirley or Abdul, remove one from the project, remove both from the project and replace with another member, or place Abdul and Shirley on separate teams that have little to no interactions with each other. 4. Given the choices identified in item three, what is the best way for Abdul and Shirley to Deal with the conflict between them? I would offer to remove Shirley from the team for her lack of attention to the project and place her on another team or somewhere else within the company or let her resign her employment. 5. Given all the benefits of retrospection, what could or should have been done to avoid this conflict in the first place? Knowing that Shirley strongly opposed Abdul’s...

Linda Greenhouse's 'Challenging He Said, She Said'

...attention span the news possesses. News coverage constantly releases new and updated information to the public; therefore, can attribute to discrepancies of quality reports. A faulty report of inaccuracies transcends to the public and alters the perception the public interprets of an event or story. Linda Greenhouse, author of “Challenging ‘He Said, She Said’ Journalism”, believes performance and ideals of media coverage causes bias in the goal of modern news coverage. The balance in the media of objectivity and fairness are disrupted when, “taking sides on contentious issues, impedes rather than enhances the goal of informing the public.” (Greenhouse 21). Equally important, news coverage becomes enigmatic when they immerse themselves into...

...barring accidents, was an adventure for volunteers. The population of the United States was stabilized at forty-million souls. One bright morning in the Chicago Lying-in Hospital, a man named Edward K. Wehling, Jr., waited for his wife to give birth. He was the only man waiting. Not many people were born a day any more. Wehling was fifty-six, a mere stripling in a population whose average age was one hundred and twenty-nine. X-rays had revealed that his wife was going to have triplets. The children would be his first. Young Wehling was hunched in his chair, his head in his hand. He was so rumpled, so still and colorless as to be virtually invisible. His camouflage was perfect, since the waiting room had a disorderly and demoralized air, too. Chairs and ashtrays had been moved away from the walls. The floor was paved with spattered dropcloths. The room was being redecorated. It was being redecorated as a memorial to a man who had volunteered to die. A sardonic old man, about two hundred years old, sat on a stepladder, painting a mural he did not like. Back in the days when people aged visibly, his age would have been guessed at thirty-five or so. Aging had touched him that much before the cure for aging was found. The mural he was working on depicted a very neat garden. Men and women in white, doctors and nurses, turned the soil, planted seedlings, sprayed bugs, spread fertilizer. Men and women in purple uniforms pulled up weeds, cut down plants that were old and sickly,...

A Family Man

...the afternoon, when she had given him up arid had even changed out of her pink dress into her smock and jeans and was working once more at her bench, the doorbell rang. William had come, after all. It was in the nature of their love affair that his visits were fitful: he had a wife and children. To show that she understood the situation, even found the curious satisfaction of reverie in his absences that lately had lasted several weeks, Berenice dawdled yawning to the door. As she slipped off the chain, she called back into the empty flat, 'It's all right, Father. I'll answer it.' William had told her to do this because she was a woman living on her own: the call would show strangers that there was a man there to defend her. Berenice's voice was mocking, for she thought his idea possessive and ridiculous; not only that, she had been brought up by Quakers and thought it wrong to tell or act a lie. Sometimes, when she opened the door to him, she would say, 'Well! Mr. Cork', to remind him he was a married man. He had the kind of shadowed handsomeness that easily gleams with guilt, and for her this gave their affair its piquancy. But now - when she opened the door - no William, and the yawn, its hopes and its irony, died on her mouth. A very large woman, taller than herself, filled the doorway from top to bottom, an enormous blob of pink jersey and green skirt, the jersey low and loose at the neck, a face and body inflated to the point of speechlessness. She even seemed to be asleep...

Red from Green

...The summer she turned fifteen, Sam Turner took her last float trip down the river with her father. It was July, and hot, and the water was low. Hardly anyone was on the river but them. They had two inflatable Avon rafts with oaring frames—Sam and her father in one, her uncle Harry and a client from Harry’s new law firm in the other. In the fall, she would be a sophomore, which sounded very old to her. She’d been offered a scholarship to a boarding school back East, but she hadn’t accepted it yet. Applying had been her father’s idea, but now he looked dismayed every time the subject came up. Everyone said what an opportunity it was, so much better than the local schools, but she couldn’t bring herself to fill out the forms, and neither of them could talk about it. Sam had been down the river every summer for as long as she could remember—in a dozen rainstorms, and in hot sun that burned the print of swimsuit straps into her shoulders. (…) It was a four-day float trip, or five if you dawdled, or three if her father had to get back to work. Her uncle’s client was the reason they were on the river so late in the summer, when it was all sandbars and rocks. Sam hadn’t been told that, exactly, but it was the feeling she got, that they were going for this client. He had come from somewhere else, and was staying in Montana only for the case. She met him at the put-in, unloading the gear. Harry introduced her as his niece. “You got a name?” the client asked. “Sam,” she said. “Layton...

Indirect Speech

...exactly what someone has said is called direct speech (sometimes called quoted speech) Here what a person says appears within quotation marks ("...") and should be word for word. For example: She said, "Today's lesson is on presentations." or "Today's lesson is on presentations," she said. Indirect Speech / Reported Speech Indirect speech (sometimes called reported speech), doesn't use quotation marks to enclose what the person said and it doesn't have to be word for word. When reporting speech the tense usually changes. This is because when we use reported speech, we are usually talking about a time in the past (because obviously the person who spoke originally spoke in the past). The verbs therefore usually have to be in the past too. For example: Direct speech | Indirect speech | "I'm going to the cinema", he said. | He said he was going to the cinema. | Tense change As a rule when you report something someone has said you go back a tense: (the tense on the left changes to the tense on the right): Direct speech |   | Indirect speech | Present simple  She said, "It's cold." | › | Past simple  She said it was cold. | Present continuous  She said, "I'm teaching English online." | › | Past continuous  She said she was teaching English online. | Present perfect simple  She said, "I've been on the web since 1999." | › | Past perfect simple  She said she had been on the web since 1999. | Present perfect continuous  She said, "I've been teaching English...

Shakespeare Stories

...shake his head in sorrow when his chief secretary showed him it at the end of a list. He decided, therefore, that wrongdoers must be punished. But popularity was dear to him. He knew that, if he were suddenly strict after being lax, he would cause people to call him a tyrant. For this reason he told his Privy Council that he must go to Poland on important business of state. "I have chosen Angelo to rule in my absence," said he. Now this Angelo, although he appeared to be noble, was really a mean man. He had promised to marry a girl called Mariana, and now would have nothing to say to her, because her dowry had been lost. So poor Mariana lived forlornly, waiting every day for the footstep of her stingy lover, and loving him still. Having appointed Angelo his deputy, the Duke went to a friar called Thomas and asked him for a friar's dress and instruction in the art of giving religious counsel, for he did not intend to go to Poland, but to stay at home and see how Angelo governed. Angelo had not been a day in office when he condemned to death a young man named Claudio for an act of rash selfishness which nowadays would only be punished by severe reproof. Claudio had a queer friend called Lucio, and Lucio saw a chance of freedom for Claudio if Claudio's beautiful sister Isabella would plead with Angelo. Isabella was at that time living in a nunnery. Nobody had won her heart, and she thought she would like to become a sister, or nun. Meanwhile Claudio did not lack an advocate. An ancient...
