Health assessment of the Ear.

1. List the 3 function of the middle ear: conducts sound vibrations from the out ear to the central hearing apparatus in the inner ear. It protects the inner ear by reducing the amplitude of loud sounds.

2. Contrast 2 pathways of hearing bone conduction - conduction of sound waves to the inner ear through the bones of the skull. air conduction - conduction of sound waves to the inner ear through the external auditory canal and middle ear.

3. Differentiate among the types of hearing loss and give examples:
Conductive hearing loss involves a mechanical dysfunction of the external or middle ear. It may be caused by impacted cerumen, foreign bodies, a perforated tympanic membrane, pusor serum in the middle ear, otosclerosis. Sensorineural loss signifies pathology of the inner car, cranial nerve VIII, or the auditory areas for the cerebral cites. It may be caused by presbycusis, a gradual nervedegeneration that occurs with aging and by ototoxic drug.

4. Relate the difference that places the infant at greater risk for middle ear infections.
The infant's Eustachian tube is shorter and wider its position is more horizontal so it is easier for pathogens from the nasopharynges to migrate through to the middle ear.

5. Describe the whisper voice test of hearing acuity.
• Test one ear at a time while masking hearing in the other ear to prevent transmission around the head.
• Placing one finger on the tragus and rapidly pushing it in and out of the auditory meatus do this. Shield your lips so the person cannot compensate for a hearing loss by lip reading or using the "good" ear.
• With your head 30 to 60 cm from the person's ear, exhale and whisper slowly a set of 3random numbers and letters, such as 5 B 6.

6. Explain the positioning of normal ear alignment in the child.
The top of the pinna should match an imaginary

Tinnitus Research Paper

...Tinnitus can intrude with listening to but doesn’t cause listening to loss Tinnitus is a symptom associated with many ear disorders. A common purpose of tinnitus is inner ear damage. ...The Silent Society: Being Deaf Deafhood and Epistemology When considering the epistemology of deafness, one must consider the history of how deafness has evolved. The history of deafness comes from the ignorance of those who could not understand how people who had a disability were different from them. It was easier to place these types of “folks” in intuitions and not deal with their needs. Understanding the deaf community comes through understanding the culture and the history that allows the deaf to have a “voice” and provide them with the necessary services that make the deaf more human. Through mental health, hearing assessments, and trauma, there is an understanding that even though they may not live in the hearing world, there are still apart of society. How they function as a community is important, as they too have a voice. Deafhood is described as “static”, not a medical condition; however, it is a process-a struggle that is endured by every child, adult, and family to explain themselves, and each other their own existence within their world (Hauser, O’Hearn, Steider, &Thew, 2010). Epistemology can be defined as the philosophy that investigates the origin, nature, methods, and limits to human knowledge. When dealing with deaf epistemology, there are many facets to which it can be understood and misunderstood. The authors discuss the visual learning process that a Deaf child goes through by being raised by either a Deaf parent or a hearing parent....
