Dan Speer, Facilitator

Communication is an important aspect of everyone’s life, but effective communication is most crucial in the health care settings because any miscommunication can lead to misdiagnosis, inadequate or delayed treatments, and the releasing of private information (Cheesebro, 2010). As the Communications Coordinator for a national drug manufacturer, it is my responsibility to manage crisis, enhance patient satisfaction, make information available to the public, and assess consumer needs. So today we will need to brainstorm and discuss how we will address the negative effects that our medications are causing to the public. The local news has already allegedly reported that our local mayor has suffered from adverse affects from our medications. How can we address the public regarding this issue without losing business and the trust we created with our investors and our consumers? In today’s meeting we will need to decide which communication tactic is most suitable for this situation, while making sure that we do not break any HIPPA guidelines.

There are many inevitable changes or innovations that will take place within health care organizations and will definitely require implementation as well as training the entire staff. The staff must be given extensive training to understand state law, HIPAA regulations, along with the organization’s protocol and procedures in order to deliver the best quality of medical care. Still, there are many unavoidable changes and revolutions that will take place within health care organizations which will push for unpredicted deliberation and strategic implementations of a “plan B”. ...advantages and disadvantages to all forms of healthcare communication, which must be considered in our current situation. It has become public knowledge at this point that our medications have been resulting in negative side effects in a large number of consumers, including a well-known public figure. Due to this unfortunate circumstance, it is imperative that we address this issue in the best way possible so that we can assure our consumers that we are improving our medications and that our company is deeply concerned about preventing this issue from ever occurring again. The first method I feel we should discuss is the use of social media to address this issue. One advantage to this is that social media reaches a vast audience, as a large majority of people check their social media multiple times throughout the day. Addressing the issue via our company Facebook page would allow us to respond personally to the concerns of our consumers and give surety that we are handling the matter with urgency. A drawback to this would be the possibility of people responding to us with extremely negative and discourteous comments, which is not unusual with the use of social media. Because there is no face-to-face interaction and people are able to respond anonymously, they will say anything they want to without consequences, which could put our company in an uncomfortable situation. “Social media can be an effective avenue for communication in healthcare, but it also presents risks and regulatory...

I absolutely love my job and feel truly blessed to work at a place where I feel both gratified as well as fulfilled. It truly feels good going home at the end of my shift knowing that I did something that day that was meaningful. It really gives me so much joy to be working for the wise and peaceful elderly residents, and although I can indeed go on and on about how much I love my wonderful job, at the moment we are facing an unfortunate situation. A large national group called “Goliath Bank” has just bought our nursing home, thus having control over all things that are administrative as well as clinical matters. This change did not come as a big surprise to me because I comprehended that “Serene Senior Living” was having some financial problems since the beginning of last year, and although I even predicted that a big company such as “Goliath Bank” might eventually step in, I am still saddened and disappointed by the fact that the changes that are being implemented by the bank are not very beneficial to the elderly residents. While I recognize that: conflicts represent inevitable part of organizational everyday life in healthcare structures (Todorova, 2010), since the instance the bank has implemented the new policies, most of the residents are facing really tough times at the moment.
