There are many strategies and methods that can be used to reduce the risk of abuse or neglect and helping children and young people to understand that they have the right to be safe, secure and free from harm.

Being respectful can be given or received. Respect can be something that is earned not demanded. Respect is often thoughts as earned or built over time. Continued caring interactions are required to maintain or increase feelings of respect among individuals. If someone respects you they are more likely to confide in you. However respect can be easily broken. I think the strategy of being respectful could help the relationship between Liam and his parents. If they allowed Liam back into the home with certain conditions, they would be able to spend more time together and interact more allowing them to build some sort of bond within their relationships with each other, which creates some sort of respect for each other. if Liam and his parents’ have some sort of maintaining respect for each other his parents would be able to discuss the issues Liam has such as being in trouble with the police all the time and stealing, Liam would then feel like he could confide in his parents, allowing them to help him with his issues/problems. Making it easier for the family to live together under one household.

The child centred approach endorses the rights of the child to choose, make connections and communicate. It allows freedom for children to experience, think, explore, question and search for answers. Children and young people need to be encouraged to be strong enough to seek support and guidance if they find themselves in an adverse situation. I think the strategy of child centred approach could help Liam by encouraging him to seek support and guidance when he finds himself in adverse situations, he should be able to get the support from his parents which he is not receiving he needs some sort of guidance and supervised so that he stays on the right track, instead of being kicked out of the house and allowing him to do what he likes. As he does not know his father he may be acting in this way by getting himself in to trouble because he is struggling with the issue of his father, he may want to ask questions about him so he can move on with his own life. As for the two younger children Shirene and Lewis they should be able to build connections and friendships by doing things like dancing or wrestling lessons, so they can have the freedom to explore and find their interests or hobbies which will keep them out of trouble. However there is a money situation when it comes to being able to pay for fees perhaps the family could get some sort of financial help or find free classes the children could go to.

Children and young people need to know and understand that they have rights of their own. They need to be aware of what is right and what is wrong and should be encouraged to seek help if they feel they are being treated unfairly. I think the empowering children and young people strategy could help all three of the children. The parents should provide the support and discipline to ensure the children that they know what is the right things to do and what is the wrong thing to do, they could support them for example if either of the children found themselves in a situation where they were being peer pressured into doing something such as drugs or perhaps they were being bullied, they should be able to go to their parents and ask for guidance. The parents should be able to give the children guidance on support in these situations not telling or letting them deal with it on their own by telling them ‘they need to be able to look after themselves’ where Lewis got the wrong idea and got into many fights with children who were bulling him at school.

Children and young people need to be aware of their bodies, how they function and how to keep them safe. I think the sharing information that is appropriate strategy could be very useful to each of the children, teaching them about what good and bad foods do to their body, encouraging them to make healthier choices with their meals as all three children have poor diets. It could also help Liam by teaching him that as he gets older there will be people who will pressure him into doing bad things such as using drugs and alcohol, he should know that he does not have to do it if he choices not to, not to do it because he friends do it. It could also teach him about the affects drugs and alcohol have on the body and the long term affects that could deteriorate the health of his body. There are also strategies that could help the parents when dealing with their children and providing a suitable environment for their children to grow up in. In this case Fiona and Steve need to be able to develop a more supportive relationship with each other, as Steve thinks that Fiona should deal with the children and what goes on at home, she is unable to cope with these things on her own. Steve just leaves her with the children while he goes to the social club to drink. Instead they should team up as parents where they will have a stronger system to help deal with the children as they have each other to support instead of having to do it on their own. It could also help teach the parents to recognise the significance and value of their contributions to their children, home and life. They could contribute to supporting their children a lot more especially in school situations such as Liam being in his finally years of secondary school where he is going through exams, they could try and keep him on the right track so he will have a more positive attitude to attending school. It is also the same with the other younger children they need to have more encouragement from their parents by explaining to them the major outcomes they could have if they attend school such as getting a good job and earning for themselves. It will also encourage them to develop their parenting skills by sending them to parenting classes where they can learn to cope with their children and maintain a stable home for their children, such as teaching them how to discipline their children correctly, knowing how to support their children and giving them support and advice about their family situations. They could also learn how to cook proper meals and making them healthier so the children can maintain a healthier lifestyle, and they could also teach them how to clean their home and to maintain a cleaner home.
