As a black man in America blessed with health, an opportunity to make change, and a mind to put it into action, I have a duty. I have been tasked to help the families and communities that are disproportionally affected by health complications. In my life one of these reoccurring health complications is diabetes. I grew up with multiple father figures. Each one taught and is still teaching me on what it means to be a man, and each one was diagnosed with diabetes. As a means to have an impact on the state of healthcare for black communities and to give back to my support system that has invested in my success and development, I want to go into the medical field.
I’m pursuing the specialization of family medicine. I view this discipline as one that is instrumental to the health of the community by holding an active role within families that make the community a living, dynamic system. As a metaphorical first line of defense for healthcare I want to breakdown the socioeconomic and cultural factors that obstruct effective treatment for the patient population. As an aspiring family physician one of the most important traits is the capacity to connect with people with the goal of forming relationships. Whether it is the youth at community centers in Portsmouth, Virginia, or parents and elders during group diabetes management …show more content…
My exposure to these medical facilities opened my eyes to a unique way to focus on health on an individual and community scale. I resonate with the mission of serving a population of people that, under normal circumstances, would not be able pursue healthcare. Healthcare is a field interconnected with multiple aspects of an individual’s life. Being able to see communities similar to the one I grew up in benefit from the FQHCs, shaped my broad motive to “help people” into a passion which came with a set of ideas on how I can make an impact in

My most recent internship was in the division of mental health at the U.S. Virgin Islands Department of Health. In the eight weeks that I interned there, I worked closely with a mental health and substance abuse counselor and also shadowed the psychiatrist, Dr. Leighmin Lu. Within two weeks, I was able to conduct patient intakes and lead group therapy sessions under the supervision of certified mental health and addiction counselors. I also observed the clinical setting of the psychiatric ward at the Roy Lester Schneider Hospital. While working at the Department of Health I was exposed to the fragilities of the human...

Organizational Change Process

...Organizational Change Process: The EMR in Health Care Settings In the past decade, new advances in technology have changed health care. Experts continue to speculate that information technology has and will play a key role in efficiency, costs, and quality of patient care (Mehlman, 2010). With these changes comes the demand for hospitals to keep up with the times. In January 2009 President Barack Obama spoke about the government’s recent stimulus package and drive to have Americans’ health records electronic “within the next five years in order to save both dollars and lives” (Childs, Chang, & Grayson, 2009, para. 2).The “meaningful” use of electronic medical records promises to improve processes, decrease errors, and extend far beyond cost savings for the hospital, physicians, nurses, and the patients. Transforming a paper-based system into an electronic health- record application will allow real-time patient information to pass through multiple sources faster, enhance communication throughout the hospital into the community, and provide fiscally responsible care with the click of a mouse. Updating to an electronic form of medical records storage has been proven to be more economical and efficient. However, organizations are often met with resistance when moving forward with plans to transition without adequately preparing the employees of the organization. Whenever a breakdown in the communication between the administrators and staff members has occurred, a barrier to...

Electronic Medical Records (Erm): Development of Medical Software Application

...Abstract: Developing medical software applications have been on the forefront these days because of a series of proposals President Obama has presented to American public within the stimulus package on modernizing our medical records to Electronic Medical Records (EMR) management. So far one can only understand that most of the existing medical software application was developed and probably designed by medical specialists that might not understand the total functionality of creating user friendly interfaces and a well secured application. Most software applications are can be so inflexible that when new ideas need to be implemented it becomes quite difficult to redesign. The complexity at hand now is designing an application that is secure as well as flexible to change. Not all medical offices are used for the same functionality so why not develop medical software applications for EMR that deliver and perform the same. Throughout this paper an approach will focus on addressing development of medical software application specific enough to meet a particular need, but general enough to be reusable across similar applications. Electronic Medical Records (ERM): development of medical software application Medical application design for Electronic Medical Records (EMR) has increased over the past several years because our government and medical doctors are concerned about cost. These are key drivers of EMR and will continue to drive purchasing of EMR systems soon...
